on the Pens' throats. This isn't going to be as easy as some might think. They get to play with six defenseman now. Pens management blew it with the salary cap...how do you not have enough money to call someone up to replace your two injured D? But no salary cap in the playoffs.
The only edge the Pens have on the Rangers is top tier talent. The Rangers have a massive advantage defensively, depth-wise and a pretty fair one between the pipes.
There are no "easy" draws in the Stanley Cup Playoffs but the Rangers are just a better team than the Penguins and need to play like it. There are really no excuses.

and Ottawa played Montreal tough in the only loss. Rangers better come ready to play 3 strong periods tonight and not give the Pens any reason to believe.
Obviously with those two top players they have, they can do damage. But they haven't been a good team pretty much since the new year. We're deeper up front, we have he better goalie, and the far better defense. Their D struggled with our speed even when they were fully healthy back there.
if you lose us the series this year --- there's gonna be a public whipping

regular season doesnt mean shit, unless your Boston. In their case, it did. Whole new season now. 3 higher seeds lost last night -- nobody cares how successful the NYR season was, we still need to win just as many games as the LePews to get to the next round now.

I have been growing the beard since last week when for all intents the Rangers regular season was over. Should I shave today before the first playoff game or leave it and go into the postseason, hot.
What's the right thing to do? Start fresh tonight or go in on a follicle streak? I'm willing to do whatever it takes.
Do not have the type of team to be effective by instigating. If they do that they are already cooked, so I do not agree at all they will come out and do that. They have to hope that their defense can hold serve and that the two big boys have a huge series, they also have to hope that "The Flower" has a big series, that is their formula, they can not change that. We have to play like we did the last 57 games, its that simple for us. We were 42 - 12 - 3 the last 57 games. We play like we did during this period, and we win the cup. It's that simple on paper, there is no other team that has played at that level for that length of time in the NHL.
You gotta antagonize, says assistant coach Rick Tocchet, who did a bit of that during his playing days. If Rick Nash is on the ice, you make sure you hit him, take a piece of him. They're going to do the same thing to Crosby. Crosby gets it all year. We have to have the mentality to go after their best players. Disciplined, obviously. I'm not saying head-hunting. None of that. But you have to go after their players.

He has a better supporting cast around him this year and he does not have to be the "man". He just needs to focus on his game and play solid two-way hockey. What has been really surprising with Nash is his PK ability.
it won't last long...i'll be a hairy mess of a fucker in no time...wife is already bitching...Niece's communion is coming up in two weeks. Oh well...too bad--both her parents are Rangers fans...they will more than understand...
But what's annoying is that there's very little connecting the mustache part to the rest of the beard. Everywhere else is full growth, but with these two little sparse patches at the corners of my mouth.
My beard has a lot of red in it even though I have dark brown hair. It's some fuckin' bullshit.
Oh, there are far worse things than that, like starting to have more salt than pepper in mine. In a few years I'm going to have to swear off facial hair for good because I'm gonna look like Santa Claus. And I have hardly any gray on my head outside of my face!

1. Nash
2. Hank - I dont agree with deej's assessment that he's resembled "Peyton Manning" this time of year - Manning's personal playoff numbers are at best mediocre, while Hank has performed well, just hasn't gotten the goal support - but there's no question winning a Cup will be a key determinant in comparing him to the all-time greats. I do believe he'll have his jersey retired in the MSG rafters regardless... but only a Cup cements his legacy as maybe the all-time greatest Ranger
3. MSL - he's a goner if we perform poorly in the playoffs and he doesnt contribute much. I'd probably keep Hagelin over him anyway, but he's got to earn a spot on the 2015-2016 roster with a strong showing this Spring.
4. AV - 3 Presidents Trophies in 5 years, but the playoff demons are still there. Got to get to the mountain top.
5. Sather - mortgaged the future at the deadline - need to get the return on that investment. We may still be a pretty good team in 2 years, but some of these younger teams are only going to get better, Hank will passing his prime, and the salary cap will continue to bite at our core. Our best shot is now - this year and next year.

Moves on to the real season. Rangers have the speed. Rangers have the energy of some youth. Rangers have Nash and St Louis. Rangers have great defense. Rangers have the best goalie in hockey.
They need to take this one shift at a time. They need to win the first 5 minutes of the game and take it to the Pens. Get the first edge in SOG. Then settle in and play loose. More than anything they have to play as though they are the wild card - as though they have nothing to loose. Relaxed. Willing to gamble and take risks.
Let's go baby. Bring me my first REAL CUP! This is the year and it starts NOW!
It's game one of the playoffs. MAF is supposed to be a franchise goalie. Get some fucking rebound control. That's what separates the greats from the okays -- everyone lets in stinkers and makes amazing plays. Its stuff like rebound control, puck handling, positioning that separate the goalies.
making a push in the next 5. Don't like this penalty. Actually prefer the Rangers to keep going 5 on 5. Penguins trying to change things up - some pushing and shoving and probably don't even mind the penalty. Make em pay baby. Make em pay.
Their roster is too populated with marginal guys who dont skate well. In the MSG pre-playoffs preview, one of the guys pointed out that the Pens' deadline moves went low skill which made no sense.
that the Pens are ready for this season to be over. I dont think they enjoy being just another team, rather than a regular season Juggernaut.
What an absolutely horribly run organization. Sure, they win a cup after piling up super high picks (and the Crosby and Malkin picks were no-brainers). But they really havent been able to pull ANY talent out of the draft in years.
That quality of tail Dugauy has pulled down is really something. First wife was a model. Not his first pretty lady though:
Quote:
Clippings about Duguay's off-ice activities with the likes of Cheryl Tiegs, Farrah Fawcett, Cher, Patti LuPone and Bianca Jagger could have papered the entire New York locker room. That's reportedly one reason Herb Brooks, the Rangers' no-nonsense coach, traded Duguay to the Detroit Red Wings after six seasons last June. "Most of the things you read about in the gossip columns were not actual dates," explains Duguay, "but, uh, we just kind of ran into each other."
That's right -- he got so much famous ass they had to trade him. Second (current) wife is model Kim Alexis. Here she is in here prime:
Good.Rangers could use more "crunch" out of their forwards. I dont mean more 4th line tough guys. But more hitting, and hits that actually matter. Fast gets a lot of hits, but they're not meaningful. Guys like Kreider and Miller should be tougher to play against.
I don't know about that, he has given up about four or five rebounds this period right in front of his own net and we just didn't have anyone there to capitalize on it.
Ironically, not terrible defensively, struggled mightily offensively; no flow, no consistently accurate breakouts or smooth d to d passing. To be expected to some degree but something the Rangers can take advantage of by getting some of their aggressive guys (Zucc, Hagelin, Brassard) on an attacking forecheck. Crosby also looked off all game. A Captain needs to be ready. OTOH, you guys looked generally solid and also showed restraint like my Isles did last night when the opposing team got rough and things got chippy. Good game for you.
and the coaching staff will make some tweaks for game 2 based on what we saw in the 2nd/3rd periods tonight.... pretty ugly win, but fuck it its the playoffs and we're one of just 2 home teams that has actually won its first round game.
MAF was solid but not half as good as McGuirre was blowing him all night.
We'll take it... get ready for Saturday night. Hope DG is ok, especially since Klein still appears a game or two away.
a bit ugly but the Penguins really got no quality scoring chances. They adjusted the way they played and played well defensively, but Henrik really didn't have to do much even in the 2nd and 3rd periods where it seemed ugly.
Watched the game on mute at school. I had to attend an award show and I watched the game on my iPad. Glad NYR it a victory. MAF made some nice saves, we could've witnessed a 4-1 win but 2-1 is just as good. Great work.
having a 5-1 edge in power plays in a game helps limit the opposing teams' scoring chances.
I just thought we were a little sloppy tonight -- capable of better. But like I said, win is a win, bound to be some Game 1 jitters... its certainly better than putting 50 shots on net and losing like Tampa just did ... looking forward to Game 2.
That's all it comes down to and all that matters. Hockey presents all sorts of circumstances and each game takes on a life of its own and some teams are just equipped to adapt and handle it well.. this team is one of them. They won in all sorts of ways when Hank first went down especially and they've just been finding ways all year..
I was happy with our game tonight. We did what we needed to. Wasn't perfect, not many will be.. it's playoff hockey. We can be better and will be better. Just keep winning. This Pens team can't match up.
Hope G is alright. The man is a fucking machine, though.. it will take a lot to keep him out of a game.
just saw Tampa outshot Detroit 46-14 tonight ... and lost. I knew they carried the play, but that is just ridiculous in a playoff game. (as was Hedman's effort on one of Detroit's goals)
Hopefully Mrazek can keep this going and "Halak" their ass.

That was my prediction for biggest upset. I have a hunch that Detroit will send Tampa packing
Girardi really made that play on the first goal with the stretch pass he made to Nash. He has his limitations, but he does a lot of good things for this team. One of the guys I'd be thrilled to see get a cup.
War on Ice indicates that the Penguins didn't get a scoring chance in the final ten minutes.
That game wasn't as close as the score indicated.
Yeah, I'm seeing a lot of "Well, the Rangers got off to a fast start but the Penguins controlled the play in the second and third periods" and I wonder what game they watched. The Penguins played better, but they really didn't get a lot of quality scoring chances. It's not like the Rangers were hanging on for dear life. I was nervous because it was only a one goal lead, but I never felt like the game was slipping away.
It was the most relaxed I've been with a 1 goal lead late in a playoff game in some time.. if ever, really. I just never felt like they were going to score unless they got a lucky bounce. Which, obviously you have to be wary of.. but the Rangers are really just a much better team.
I had guessed that Malkin wasn't healthy before the series started based on what he had done to close out the year but now that I've gotten a good look at him, I'm certain of it. He's not right at all.
Sure as hell will not be feeling bad for them, though. Shit happens.

Yeah, the Rangers still seemed to control the play in the 2nd and 3rd. Wasn't their best effort, but the Penguins never had a shot.
Malkin definitely looked off - good call arc.
Crosby was pathetic. He coasted way too often and almost seemed disinterested (I generally hate criticizing mental states because it's speculating on bullshit). On the ice, he's the exact opposite of what you want in the face of the league. Whiny, cunty, takes plays off, doesn't back-check frequently.
It was the most relaxed I've been with a 1 goal lead late in a playoff game in some time.. if ever, really.
Nothing compares to Game 6 ECF last year. I'm not sure the Habs spent more than 2 minutes the entire 3rd period in our zone that night. It was surreal.

Yeah, that was the most visibly gassed I've seen a team on the ice in a long time. They were just wiped out. No one could skate.
played well, McDonagh had a great game, and as an objective observer I'd say the Rangers got a few breaks on Pens penalties and no-calls against the Rangers.
One Rangers defenseman tackled a Penguins player going around the net in the 3rd period, it was borderline, but based on what they called on the Penguins it could have easily been called.
couldn't get the 3rd goal to put it away, but our boys are no strangers to playing a tight one-goal game
As posted yesterday, I was the lucky recipient of a last minute ticket, sat up behind the goal the Penguins shot at in the 3rd.
I'm no hockey expert, but I make 2-3 games a year, seeing hockey live is such a different experience than seeing it on TV. You could really see how the Rangers switched to a more defensive posture in the 3rd, everyone was very disciplined and I don't think we gave up a single odd man rush
The Penguins were trying to slip a guy deep to get open for a breakaway pass several times, and the Rangers always had a guy back marking him to make sure nothing got through
Looked like the kind of game a purist would love, like a 2-1 pitchers duel in baseball.
Oh, and someone ask Rick Tochett how their plan to take runs at our big players worked out for them...fuckin bitches
On to game 2, Let's Go Rangers
thought all the Pens calls were legit, but we did get away with a few
Greg, Brassard's general whining to the refs - Sam Rosen commented on it last night when he was basically doing it for an entire shift apparently. He does it quite often (and is also a bit of a diver).
And you're right on Callahan - he had some skill. Not $6M worth of skill, though.
Power Play , *****FaceOffs*****, & Nash...
I give the group a C-
Must do Better to get a Ring...
Great observation on faceoffs. Crosby was awesome winning 15 of 20 faceoffs and appeared to win every one in his end.
Lost my voice, great energy in the Garden and a lot of missed penalty calls behind the play. A lot of Pens were trying to agitate and/or slow down Rangers trying to get back on defense. IMO, it was counter productive as the Pens didn't join the offense.
Which just goes to show how minor the importance of faceoffs is
The guy can't fart without fans analyzing his offensive output. Nash is doing fine. His line is playing good hockey typically winning the + - battle. That's all that matters. The goals will come. I hear fans proclaim over and over the Rangers can't win the cup without NAsh scoring a bunch of goals. They came within 3 games last year and Nash didn't score a bunch of goals. And those 3 were close games that saw so many close calls.
If he forces that 3rd period turnover a little earlier in his shift, he probably gets further out ahead, generates a higher quality shot and maybe even scores. He just didn't have enough juice.
What's good about this Ranger team is that they're not going to be completely reliant on Nash for scoring output like they were 2 years ago especially. We can get goals from other places. I think he's going to have a really good spring but even if the goal scoring is still less than what we expect, we should be ok.
Crosby was indeed matched primarily against the Hagelin-Hayes-MSL line. At even strength, he faced Hagelin for 8:08, Hayes for 6:23 and MSL for 5:55. Link - ( New Window )
which of our lines was matched up most often with Crosby. He was smothered all night.
Hayes was on him quite a bit, IIRC.
That was what I thought. He's a stud. At one point he made a blind backhand pass from the half boards to the other side of the ice that went through like three defenders to create a scoring chance. I think he'll continue to break out in these playoffs.
He's almost Jagr-esque in the way he can dominate control of the puck without being pushed off it. He looks like a man amongst boys at times. There was a sequence last night where he had about 3 Penguin players on his back and still carried the puck through all of them.
of Rangers - BlackHawks would be outstanding. Hayes against the team that basically cut him in the preseason, and our replacement for Brad Richards, who now plays for the Hawks.
Make it happen.
On a side note - the fact that Chicago is still considered maybe the West favorite is incredible considering what a bad offseason they had (Leddy, Hayes), not to mention a pretty (apparently) lousy deadline deal for Vermette considering they healthy scratch him these days.
Goes to show how well their core - Kane, Toews, Keith - play this time of year.
but chose not to. Instead they signed Brad Richards.
Say what you want about Sather (most of us have warmed up to him, but still...) -- he would never lose an asset like Hayes for absolutely nothing in an offseason.
A trade for a vet or a pick, would make room on the roster, whatever. It would never happen.
2011: Lost at Washington (fell behind 0-2)
2012: Lost vs Ottawa (tied 1-1), Lost vs Washington (tied 1-1), Lost vs New Jersey (tied 1-1)
2013: Lost at Boston (fell behind 0-2)
2014: Lost vs Philly (tied 1-1), Lost at Pittsburgh (tied 1-1), WIN at Montreal (up 2-0), Lost at LA (fell behind 0-2)
So its game 2 AND the ability to go up by two games in a series. I think the Montreal series last year was the first time in 12 or so tries (I recall it was a NHL record) of being up a game in a series where we actually won.
In a way, winning a tight game 2-1 last night where we played ok, but all know we can play better... is probably better than blowing them out 5-1. Keeps the team on its toes.
We've had blowout wins in recent years (Ottawa 2011, Philly last year), only to blow the following game (at home)
That's ridiculous. Its only for the top pick at least right? I thought i read Buffalo is guaranteed a top 2 pick.
In other news... what a shocker! Even though its the playoffs, the Islanders may get a backup goalie yet again!!
Quote:
Capitals promote goaltender Philipp Grubauer
Philipp Grubauer has been called up by the Washington Capitals.
Braden Holtby is apparently feeling under the weather, so Grubauer joined the Capitals as a precautionary measure. It's still possible that Holtby will play and if it becomes apparent that that's the case then Grubauer will likely be returned to the minors so that he can help AHL Hershey as it finishes off its regular season schedule this weekend.
teams can't win the top pick but any team in the lottery can. It used to be you could only move up a max of 5 spots if you won (see NJD winning the lottery and going from #9 to #4 and taking Larson, if they had won the lottery this year, they would've gotten #1 overall).
Eichel and McDavid are both game changers IMO, I don't want to see either on a rival of mine.
But I think Auston Matthews could be better than both in next year's draft if he continues on the same trajectory.
In this draft if I miss out on Eichel and McDavid I'd hope Noah Hanifin falls to me.
Only draft event in any sport I ever attended was the NHL Draft in 1994 at the Hartford Civic Center. It was boring as hell, but I got my picture with the Stanley Cup.
RE Nash ... while I would be disappointed if Nash's scoring
disappeared in the playoffs, esp after the great regular season he had ... I just don't think this team is as dependent upon Nash as in the past ... in fact, right now I think the Stepan line has been the top line over the last 10 games or so ... and the Hayes line has been #2. And the great thing is that even when the Nash line isn't scoring it is contributing in other ways - this season Nash has contributed in every aspect of the game for the Rangers. The bottom line is that this team has four solid lines and when Klein gets back, a great defense. I'm really pumped.
A special level of sports hatred for the Penguins and Cowboys.
Off to NY and MSG tonight
There are no "easy" draws in the Stanley Cup Playoffs but the Rangers are just a better team than the Penguins and need to play like it. There are really no excuses.

What're ya gonna shoot down a couple MiGs with that thing?
I'll settle for not dying in my sleep because I suffocate on my own snoring.
Really? What do you mean? Do you stop breathing?
verb suffocate \ˈsə-fə-ˌkāt\
: to die because you are unable to breathe
Jesus Christ, read a book for once in your life, B.

Yeah, their defense sucks bigger dicks than Tori Black.
Seriously, who the hell is that on their 3rd pair? Ben Lovejoy as a first pairing defenseman? Come on boys
Fuckin hell. I gotta start boozing here in a bit. Pregames about to come on.

One of them hadn't played in the NHL since 2012,the other has a grand total of 14 games played in the big leagues.
Drop the damn puck already.

Dude stopped skating back. When they were all playing in a defensive set to prevent what just happened. It was pathetic.
Well, better PIT lose to the Rangers than the Caps or Isles.
That's a shame
Goalie interference. You cant just skate full speed like that and cause contact forcing the goalie back. Seemed so obvious watching real time too.
Most definitely. Make them pay, dammit.
ANOTHER PP!!
Let's get 2 more just like it
What an absolutely horribly run organization. Sure, they win a cup after piling up super high picks (and the Crosby and Malkin picks were no-brainers). But they really havent been able to pull ANY talent out of the draft in years.
Yup. Trying to goad the Rangers into losing their heads. Too bad for them the Rangers aren't the 2012 Penguins.
That quality of tail Dugauy has pulled down is really something. First wife was a model. Not his first pretty lady though:
That's right -- he got so much famous ass they had to trade him. Second (current) wife is model Kim Alexis. Here she is in here prime:
So lemme just ask -- what are you pulling down?

Good.Rangers could use more "crunch" out of their forwards. I dont mean more 4th line tough guys. But more hitting, and hits that actually matter. Fast gets a lot of hits, but they're not meaningful. Guys like Kreider and Miller should be tougher to play against.
I don't know about that, he has given up about four or five rebounds this period right in front of his own net and we just didn't have anyone there to capitalize on it.
Yes he has. He had one bad turnover.
Yes good point Wu.
100%...and its not saying much. Periods 2 and 3 have exhibited pretty poor Ranger puck movement. Especially in their own end.
2. Miller
3. Yandle
2. Miller
3. Yandle
I think Hags deserved the 3rd star. Ugly 2nd and 3rd. Hags was digging and making things difficult with his speed. Yandle was solid on the PP tho.
Hopefully Klein is ready for Saturday

You're starting to sound smart. Damn you!
Hate when that happens. Gonna revert to my normal Cro-Magnon state sooner or later.
Haha. You're the "magnon"!
MAF was solid but not half as good as McGuirre was blowing him all night.
We'll take it... get ready for Saturday night. Hope DG is ok, especially since Klein still appears a game or two away.
I just thought we were a little sloppy tonight -- capable of better. But like I said, win is a win, bound to be some Game 1 jitters... its certainly better than putting 50 shots on net and losing like Tampa just did ... looking forward to Game 2.
1 down, 15 to go.
Hopefully Mrazek can keep this going and "Halak" their ass.
Hopefully Mrazek can keep this going and "Halak" their ass.
That was my prediction for biggest upset. I have a hunch that Detroit will send Tampa packing
oh boy - well, since when have NHL players needed teeth. I remember some of the guys in the old days ...

Hayes was on him quite a bit, IIRC.
Nothing compares to Game 6 ECF last year. I'm not sure the Habs spent more than 2 minutes the entire 3rd period in our zone that night. It was surreal.
If we're going to get out of a series in 4-5 games for once, this is it.

It was the most relaxed I've been with a 1 goal lead late in a playoff game in some time.. if ever, really.

Yeah, that was the most visibly gassed I've seen a team on the ice in a long time. They were just wiped out. No one could skate.
I give the group a C-
Must do Better to get a Ring...
Does that mean Brett's going to hate him, too?
One Rangers defenseman tackled a Penguins player going around the net in the 3rd period, it was borderline, but based on what they called on the Penguins it could have easily been called.
Good game, great playoff intensity.
Does that mean Brett's going to hate him, too?
No, Miller has skill and doesn't whine like a bitch. Love TRJT.
Speaking of which, I wish Brassard would shut the fuck up.
Why is Comeau a King slayer, btw?
What did Brass say, Brett? And cmon - even if you didn't like him, Callahan has skill.
And you're right on Callahan - he had some skill. Not $6M worth of skill, though.

What's good about this Ranger team is that they're not going to be completely reliant on Nash for scoring output like they were 2 years ago especially. We can get goals from other places. I think he's going to have a really good spring but even if the goal scoring is still less than what we expect, we should be ok.

which of our lines was matched up most often with Crosby.
I wouldn't say Chicago "basically cut" Hayes. He didn't want to play for them because he didn't think he'd have the opportunity to crack their lineup.
No doubt in my mind LA or Boston wins.
In other news... what a shocker! Even though its the playoffs, the Islanders may get a backup goalie yet again!!
Hoping one of Arizona or Edmonton wins please.
Columbus would be the worst team to win it IMO. Would be a disaster for the other Metro teams. Wouldn't be great if Philly or NJD won either.
Flyers would still have a lot of holes - man would their fortunes be a lot different if Nashville hadn't matched that Weber offer.
THN - ( New Window )
I guess it's a lottery for the #1 pick followed by #3 as Buffalo can only drop one spot.
