Why does that even matter?

No outrage if it was a shirtless black woman lying next to it and smiling? Makes sense.

Did the shirtless black woman also pay an exorbitant amount of money to indulge her ego and travel to Africa for the sole purpose of killing it's indigenous species and pass it off as a humanitarian mission? If so, yeah, she'd be dumb too.

again with reading what you want out of piece. she never said she traveled to Africa to do humantarian good deeds. she traveled for a purpose and another opportunity arose while she was there.

We have deer hunters that go out specifically to make the world a better place and thin their numbers before they take us over. we should thank those guys that hate hunting but are doing so only out of the kindness of their own hearts.

Yeah... imagine being in an African tribe and setting a trap for hours in the hot sun in preparation of catching a giraffe and just when it's finally about to catch one... BOOM... someone kills it right before it falls into the trap.

Total letdown.

Do people really hunt solely for population control? Like, they dont really WANT to hunt, but they have to be a hero because the land is overburdened?

Im not very knowledgeable about this stuff, but it seems like pop control is more likely an excuse to hunt. As for food, I have spoken to a number of people who do that where my in-laws live (northern MN). They all like hunting so its not just a food issue for them. In fact I'd guess that they could buy beef cheaper than their outlay on gear, licenses, butchery etc to get deer/moose meat.

I dont have a position on hunting regardless of purpose. As a non-vegetarian I dont think I can really get on too high of a moral horse about killing animals. But I really struggle to believe that there are many people who are hunting who do not actively enjoy it.

Not a hunter, but I doubt the gear, licenses are that expensive and most of the gear is a one time purchase (except ammo). Butcher fees here in MN at least are pretty low (~$100 for a deer). So I'm guessing people that store and eat most of the deer meat save some money relative to purchasing beef (keep in mind cuts of the deer would be equivalent to ribeye, t-bone, etc). Granted I doubt most hunt purely to save money. It's more likely a combo of:
1. Enjoyment
2. Population control
3. Food

Cost
Deej : 4/16/2015 3:14 pm : link
For what, about 50 pounds of meat? 75 for a big buck? So that's $2 a pound just for processing. Also, while any specific piece of gear is a one-time purchase, the fact of the matter is that hunting is really a hobby for most, and so they plow money into it every season. Guys may have half a dozen guns, all kinds of outfits, stand/hide equipment etc. Plus a freezer and electricity. Whether one time or recurring, you cant ignore those costs. I really doubt that many people are investing in hunting kit in Minnesota as the economical source of meat. You can buy cheaper cuts of beef for less than $5 on sale/bulk, and pork is very cheap.

There are a few hardcore types who actually do subsist substantially on hunted meat. My f-i-l's cousin is one, but that guy's halfway to being Jeremiah Johnson. He hunts all the time and does all the processing himself. Very rare.

Rare indeed. Most hunters (around here at least) don't even come close.

who has taken many hunts in Africa. The way it works on the nature reserves is that they sell licenses/permits. These licenses are extremely expensive and the money goes into the local conservation fund. The guides then arrange the hunt (which can last from 1-5 days depending on what you bought). The guide takes the hunter out, if they find nothing in the time allotted they are done and the money is gone. If they find an animal that is worth taking (and with conservation in mind this is usually an animal that is old or past their mating prime); they are permitted to kill that animal. The local guides are in control. The meat is given to local tribes and people. What probably happened on her hunt was that they were out hunting a different animal but came across this giraffe that was a perfect candidate for a hunt, they offered a license to her for a large sum of money and she decided to take the license and hunt the giraffe. This is a lucrative business for the reserves and funds huge conservation interests. For instance I believe the permit for an elephant and a lion are both about 75k, in both cases they take only old and solitary males. I do not condone and I am also not against this but want to make sure people are informed. AS for the pictures, this is the same as any hunter ever. Pictures have always been taken. For instance, how many pictures are taken with people catching bluefin tuna every year.... a much more endangered species than a giraffe. Remember that this was not a poacher.... big difference.

Nicely stated.

People can vilify her and ask why some random white hunter would be asked to kill the giraffe over a local person, but as slov72 stated, I'm sure she paid through the nose (which provides funding for the conservation efforts), which no local would have been able to provide. So basically they killed two birds with one stone (pun intended) with this hunt by providing funding for the conservation efforts and meat for the people.

People seems to need to get outraged about the weirdest things.

Do you guys remember when that one European zoo killed that giraffe that no one wanted to take? Then they fed it the meat to the lions and other animals? And they also provided a scientific exhibit of the animal to the patrons? But people were all pissed off because people kept accusing the zoo staff of killing the giraffe in front of little kids (which they didn't even do)? Good times!

I was thinking this too, haha. That at least, didn't really compute.

Because she probably paid upwards of tens of thousands of dollars to do so, which benefits the conservation fund? I don't know any tribe that can provide that kind of monetary funds to the conservation efforts.

Hah, I guess. But, giraffes are not as plentiful as deer. There's a shitload of them in the Northeast and hunting helps keep the population in check. Fuckers are everywhere. Shitting in my yard, for example.

I'd bet there's probably a similar number of deer in CT alone as there are giraffes in all of Africa.

Beerfridge seemed to be saying that the problematic part to him, the weird part, is the picture afterwards. My point is that when people kill a giraffe, they tend to take a happy picture afterwards. That's because it is trophy hunting. Even this case. I think trophy hunting is weird; given the existence of trophy hunting I dont find the celebratory photo all that weird -- it (like taxidermy) are part and parcel of the decision to kill for sport.

What is your point?
