The Cubs are set to call up third base prospect Kris Bryant Friday, CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman confirms.
Bryant enjoyed massive success this spring, going 17 for 40 and smacking nine home runs while driving in 15 runners. However, the team decided not to activate his service clock at the beginning of the season, sending him down to Triple-A Iowa, where he's 9 of 28 with three home runs, 10 RBI and two stolen bases.
Bryant, who was named the No. 1 prospect in all of baseball by Baseball America before the season, will serve as the team's regular third baseman in Chicago. ESPN Chicago initially broke the news of the impending promotion.
Both teams got bad around the same time and went into full rebuild. Mets "focused" on big arms; I say focused b/c SF only had arms to trade so we got Wheeler, Thor was the 2nd piece of the TDA trade (but nevertheless really important), and deGrom was not a big organizational commitment. With respect to hitters, feels like the Mets have been focusing on solid but not star types.
Cubs went the other way. Grabbed bats wherever they could, regardless of where the guy would play (eg Bryant, the C/OF they just drafted). They stockpiled SSs, and they stockpiled high upside. And they went big, giving Soler $30 million and paying Lester the big bucks.
I dont know why I view the Cubs as our competition, but I really do. Feels to me like if Bryant, Russell, etc make it that it somehow undermines the Mets' rebuild... which is nuts.
RE: Any other Mets fan feeling a weird competition with the Cubs

pitching wins championships..for now. that being said, I'd love the Mets to have one of those bats. Soler and Bryant especially.
competition with the Cubs other than if the Mets are playing them.
I considered them a rival in the 80's. Them, the Cardinals and Pirates more than the Phillies or Expos (which makes sense since that was the NL East then), but once the divisions realigned I felt no more rivalry and still don't even with their resurgence.
In fact, my hatred of Boston is so strong, I almost hope if the Mets don't win, the Cubs do so Theo Epstein can say FU to the Sox front office.
And for him personally, it would be instant HOF to be the GM when the Red Sox and Cubs broke their "curses".

Actually I realized Theo is not the GM of the Cubs, he's president, Jed Hoyer is GM, the rest still applies.
