This blonde half-wit, Britt McHenry, who claims to have a brain, relentlessly humiliates a parking clerk and only gets a week's suspension.
In her obligatory apology, she claims it was due to an "intense and stressful moment". She parked illegally and got towed. She also said she should have "taken the high road", as if she was the abused party. Her litany of humiliating commentary was hardly a moment's indiscretion. It's the well thought out and practiced product of a rotten person. This princess really needs to be fired, and perhaps a couple of years time-out from the industry. Let her get a waitress job and learn some manners.
“Yep, that’s all you care about, is just taking people’s money,” McHenry says. “With no education, no skillset, just wanted to clarify that. … Do you feel good about your job? So I could be a college dropout and do the same thing? Why, cause I have a brain and you don’t?” |
“Maybe if I was missing some teeth they would hire me, huh?” McHenry says. ” ‘Cause they look so stunning … ‘Cause I’m on television and you’re in a f—–g trailer, honey.” |
Her obligatory and weak attempt at an apology.
“In an intense and stressful moment, I allowed my emotions to get the best of me and said some insulting and regrettable things,” she wrote. “As frustrated as I was, I should always choose to be respectful and take the high road. I am so sorry for my actions and will learn from this mistake.” |
Why would anyone want someone this awful working for them. Come on BSPN, I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to find a blonde with some decency.
Entitled princess - (
New Window )
But she was berating the cashier who's probably a minimum wage workers. And she was very nasty and made bad personal remarks. There is no excuse for that.
Entitled Princess, yes. If getting your car towed is that stressful that you act that way, then you just may be a bitch.
How does that feel 'baby girl'.
My bad...
Where Barbie went wrong was when she pulled the Moe Greene "Do you know who I am?!" routine and ranted about being on television.
I am in no way saying I agree with her actions, or condone them, but the fact that her job should be threatened over this is just ludicrous.
She was mad at a fat tow truck person. I bet if the tow truck person was nice she wouldn't have blown up. These people are as miz as DMV ppl, maybe worse
Having a bad day does not entitle you to ruin the day of somebody else.

What I do find funny is Barbie's belief she is on TV because she has a brain. "Just wear tight clothes and read the cards, sweetie."
I have never in my life treated someone like she did. And many other people have not either. Coming to this woman's defense by saying "we've all done it" is incorrect and a disappointing way of trying to justify one's own blow-ups.
---------------------
As far as her losing her job, I think it's only because of the job she has that cause people to feel that way. Being on TV and on ESPN, it means that ESPN viewers are customers and she is one of the people that some customers have to deal with (watch on TV). Perhaps people don't want to have to watch her on TV pretend to be this pretty, likable person when they know her to be a pretentious bitch.
I'm not joining the cause to cal for her job, but I am repulsed by her and I'm not going to want to watch ESPN segments that she's on when she comes back.
As far as whether i'll change the channel when she's on like Paul will --- i mean, she's kinda hot... and she's reading cue-cards about sports.... what's not to like here
Uhh, speak for yourself. I've certainly lost my temper at people, but I've never said anything insulting and abusive like that, not even close. If you think that's typical behavior for most people, well, you're wrong.

Hahahahaha... I'm in no way trying to pick a fight. I am just so sick of things that used to be private impacting people's lives. She had a HORRIBLE moment in which she behaved like a spoiled brat, SO WHAT! She should be fired for this? She should be publicly shamed for this? It's just asinine. I hate that we live in such a transparent hypersensitive world and this is just a prime example.
No I have never done anything this bad. And I don't think anyone rational really condones this behavior but we have all probably had a moment of bad behavior.
1. We can't hear what the tow truck company clerk is saying to her, at least I can't. If the ESPN person went in there and was an asshole to begin with that's one thing, but if she approached it reasonably and was dealt with terribly that might change my perception a little
2. Unless there is some kind of history of incidents like this I love (and that's a sarcastic love) the holier than thou BBI self-righteous contingent, how is this firable? It's wrong, and she should be punished in some manner because they're a media company and she's in the media, but fired? no second chance, no opportunity to show remorse, no "teaching moment"? I'd hate to live under those conditions myself, I'd never be judgmental enough to hold others to them (at least I'd try not to)
Hahaha. Bbi is amazing.

Kidding.
I have never been in a situation with an employee of a business where I felt enraged enough to go off like this.
Tow truck people probably can be scummy, but I'm more inclined to believe she came into the situation with an attitude.
I don't think most low-level workers like that actually LOOK for confrontation and actively try to provoke customers. It doesn't do anything for them. In fact it creates an issue for them. What I have seen more often is the customer coming in with the mindset of "If I get loud and indignant, I can get my way because the business doesn't want an incident."
but it's okay because all "towing people" are bad and the woman was overweight with a poor appearance.

I hate agreeing with CiP since he's still #1 on the Douchebag list, but I agree with him. It's one thing to be upset at the situation and even rant about how shitty their practices are and whatnot. However, when you start personally attacking the individual opposite of you, then you've crossed over from a disgruntled customer to a flaming cockbag/cuntbag.
There's a great saying regarding character of a person. It's not how a person treats his superiors or peers that indicates that person's character. It's how a person treats his inferior. Not saying that anyone else is inferior to others, but you get the point.

Of course it's not OK but I doubt the employee gives two craps about what the blond bimbo had to say and hasn't been traumatized be the incident.
The bimbo is now getting everything coming to her that she deserves and is exposed for the horrible person that she is. The employee works in a profession where she likely can expect to have to handle more than her share of idiots like this and she handled it like a pro.
I just don't see where this rises to any level of mass public outrage.

Well, when I got towed (for a bullshit reason), I was given an address to go to 2 towns away. I show up, it's a black tinted window attached to an auto body shop. No sign of my truck. I'm told to slide a money order or cash ($160) through a slot in the window. I say that I want to SEE MY TRUCK first. They say it's actually being stored at another address. So I have no choice but to pay and play ball.
Being 25 at the time, I would have probably said some regrettable things if they didn't hold all the cards.

I sort of agree with this. I'd like to see footage of the entire exchange. This company has an F rating on BBB. The comments from people who have dealt with them leads me to believe they're not completely innocent here...
It would have been really, really shitty if it were filmed, posted on the web, and I had lost a week's pay because of it.

Is it company policy to film and upload these kinds of videos to the web? That's really shitty too. I'm sure everybody behaves at their very best when being shaken down for cash.

McHenry never said she was treated poorly. I'm not arguing that they're a reputable outfit. It just appears that in this instance their notorious behavior didn't come into play. I actually thought about that when i started the thread. I didn't go so far as to research the tower's reputation, but i did search to see what may have precipitated it.
Disagree - do you think she started in on that vendetta unprompted? It's a edited clip.
The company has to know some people are going to freak out at their cashier. It's an emotional transaction, especially if you feel like you didn't do anything wrong. The fact that they aren't protecting the identities of their customers is equally as horrible as some of the words the ESPN lady said.
Is it OK for them to leak your phone call to twitter, for your employer to hear?

Actually I do. I think she's the type that looks for people to abuse. In my OP, I pointed out that that was some well crafted abuse coming out of her mouth. I'm willing to bet she's had a lot of practice at it. A normal, relatively decent person is not going to have that level of shit at the ready. And actually, that's what really got me incensed, it smacked of nasty abuser.
Imagine a customer freaking out at a Best Buy employee because he couldn't return something. Is it OK if that employee uploads the security footage to twitter?

The truck towers and front desk staff are liars. They try to bully you into thinking you did something wrong with alleged (because they refuse to show them to you) photographs of you leaving a parking lot. They should be ashamed to call themselves a business.

Advanced Towing yelp - ( New Window )
I don't know how yelp is a good measuring stick for a Towing company. I mean who In the world is ever going to say "well I enjoyed the experience I had with ABC Towing when they took my car and I had to come out of pocket with $250"?
Deadspin has a few shared stories of her cuntiness from college on
Imagine a customer freaking out at a Best Buy employee because he couldn't return something. Is it OK if that employee uploads the security footage to twitter?
I would disagree Phil, I don't think Britt's work was a freak out. I think it was a whole different level of mean!
It wasn't that she was just a customer, she's a celebrity pulling the "I'm a big deal, you're nothing" crap. I think it's more than someone who just snapped a little bit. so, ya, if she or someone like her walked into Best Buy and did the same, than I'd have no problem with it being posted online.
Second, as many have said, consider who is writing the Yelp reviews of a tow-truck company, you think they are a tad angry when they wrote it? I give that almost no weight (no pun intended).
Also- I'm pretty sure it isn't illegal to be an asshole.
Sure, call her an entitled bitch. So what? She isn't the only one out there.
If being an asshole/bitch was a fire-able offense, I'm not sure we'd be able to keep enough guys on the floor to run the plant, much less have any management staff left.
Where did I say that?

But comparing on-air talent that represent a major media outlet (owned by Disney no less) to the mouthbreathers on the factory floor is kinda dumb, don't you think? There are different standards for behavior.
Hambeast!!!! High-larious...

Yup. Sure is.

It's a question. We saw a small clip of some horrible things said by the ESPN lady. How come nobody is asking what drove her to getting as angry and personal as she did?
We might, as a public, be a bit more sympathetic to her if perhaps it was determined that they mistreated to an extreme extent. This, of course, wouldn't excuse what she said.

Phil, This is likely what precipitated it.
...She parked her car and came back 2 hours after the establishment closed (meaning she was not a customer the whole time) and insulted another woman’s weight. Is THIS ok?
Aggravating yes, but that's about it.

Sure, somewhat. I definitely think the suspension is warranted because of her position, as you wrote.
Firing, though? Who doesn't expect to have on-air personalities that are divas? Some of the reactions to her being a bitch are way overblown.
-They're not all mouthbreathers, BTW.
Is it OK for them to leak your phone call to twitter, for your employer to hear?
I'm sure this Princess appreciates your continued support late into the Friday evening. In your example above, 80% of us would get angry and yell.... but about 2% of us would resolve to personal attacks against the other person on the phone. They are just doing their job -- in such a case you either 1) go off on their company, which is not personal and would not be grounds for public outrage or a work suspension, or 2) you ask to speak to a manager.
You know how sensitive the butter golems are.
I'd appreciate if she dropped a racial slur, actually. It's always nice when ignorant fucks forget to hide behind PC language and code words.
That said- if the chick behind the desk was off-white and she called her a nigger, I'd think a firing would be completely justified because of her position (as Chris pointed out).
Pointing out the chick's weight is far less insulting than disparaging her race, IMO- in part because the former is not only accurate, but within the fattie's control while the latter is neither.
I was thinking of times where people make generalized charged statements and very one wants their job even though there's no personally directed attack. There's a surprising amount of support here for this lady so I guess people think it's less egregious. But to me it's way more. So I was curious about people's thought processes.
We parked in a cripple spot to go eat dinner across the street, for some reason assuming that a cripple spot was a cripple spot was a cripple spot and the fact that we had the appropriate plates on the vehicle made it proper to park there. They swooped in and towed us and predictably were not particularly kind about the transaction. Without comment about whether this woman did or didn't deserve this tirade, the ESPN personality is not the first person to have the urge to say something nasty.
It is. Genetics is the biggest bullshit excuse ever.
#fatlogic
Fatlogic BS.
Sure, it's a little easier for some and a little harder for others- but the differences are way overblown by the same folks that if you believe them would mean that 95% of overweight people have thyroid issues that make it impossible to lose weight unless they exercise 8hrs a day while only consuming 500 calories.
Look- I'm coming off as a crass asshole here on purpose. I'm not really into fat-shaming. I am however, 100% in favor of pointing out flimsy excuses and fatlogic whenever I see or hear them.
My now 10yr old grandson and I have recently turned around his weight problem with a few simple changes in his lifestyle. He still gets junk food and candy now and then (it's all about moderation and portion control), I've changed my cooking and grocery buying to exclude beef- only buy chicken breasts, ground turkey, and fish- cut out almost all cheese except for some sauces for the chicken (again- moderation), and we came up with a deal that his sedentary play time has to equal his active play time....basically he earns video game time by playing outside or riding his bike or chopping away at a stump in my backyard.
He was 137# when I picked him up from the summer from the ex, and is now down to ~117#. The goal is to get him down to 100# by the end of May- and it's looking like he's going to do it (the last month with nice weather has been the biggest weight decrease so far).
He looks fantastic and is really proud of himself.
There was not fat shaming when we began, but there certainly was honest discussion between the two of us recognizing that yup, he was fat, and that yeah, he wanted to change that, and that yup, it's not going to be easy and it's going to take a lot of work on his part.
Being honest about weight, even with a child is the best thing you can do- and it isn't fat shaming.
Buying into bullshit excuses about genetics and non-existent thyroid conditions or being 'big boned' is incredibly damaging. And there certainly is not lack of bullshit excuses all around especially with the whole "fat acceptance" movement. Ya know- I don't think someone is less of a person if they're overweight. I can appreciate people for who they are beyond their physical characteristics. But don't feed me bullshit about how I have to think that fat is beautiful or that being overweight doesn't cause health problems if you're a "healthy and active" fat person. And don't tell me that I'm entitled because I'm not overweight or that it's impossible to lose weight or that you only consume 1000 calories a day and work out for 2hrs just to maintain your 250lbs- that's impossible, you're lying to yourself and it's a bunch of damaging bullshit.
It simply comes down to burning more calories than you consume.
I recognize that it isn't easy. Nothing that's worthwhile is easy (Brett's mom is the perfect example). But it gets a hell of a lot easier with time- the key is to not lie to yourself about it and to stick with it.
Anyway, rant over.
Thanks for the constructive feedback. I appreciate it.
Having a bad day does not entitle you to ruin the day of somebody else.
But thank you for your sample size of... one.... and your example of a young kid who lost a whopping 20 pounds.
I'm sure those 100 pounds+ overweight because their metabolism can't burn anything down will use it as motivational tool.
I'm also not sure what any of this has to do with Britt verbally assaulting a stranger just doing her job.
The genetic argument doesn't hold unless they are descended from whales. Fat is a choice.
Take your shitty arguments elsewhere, MAB.
Well I would, and
you guys are lame at finding hot photos...
Everything I typed is backed up by countless studies. There are literally millions of examples of people losing weight.
And not eating beef and not leading a sedentary lifestyle is hard? Sure, it is definitely an adjustment, and especially early on can be difficult- but as I said before- nothing that's worth doing is easy. And once you've comitted and have been doing it for a while it becomes just as much second nature a sucking down Cokes and Doritos while watching tv from your recliner.
I've lost 60+ pounds twice. The first time, I kept it off for five years because I had no choice, and it was a constant battle. I ran upwards of 20 miles a week and had to limit myself to 1500 calories or less, or else my weight would creep back over my Marine Corps max of 176 pounds and I'd put myself in danger of failing a weigh-in. And you can call me a liar as much as you want like this other smug cocksucker on BBI whose name escapes me now, but I don't really fucking give a shit, because it's the life I lived for FIVE FUCKING YEARS and I know exactly how that shit played out. If I wasn't actively trying to lose weight, I gained weight. Up a few, down a few, up a few, down a few, over and over and over again for five years.
So when I got out, I was sick and tired of the battle. I stopped running and I ate normally, which did NOT mean "nonstop Doritos and Cokes in front of the TV", but meant I didn't eat nothing but hard boiled eggs, broiled skinless chicken/pork, salad and low-carb shakes 6 out of 7 days a week. I ate spaghetti sometimes, I ate tacos, I ate meatloaf, whatever. Fairly typical meals, some healthier than others. In about 3 years I had gained almost 70 pounds. Went back to my old Corps routine, only with more running, and got myself back to my old weight. This lasted about 2 years. After my daughter was born, having a two year old and a baby was taxing, so I cut back on my running time, down to maybe 5-8 miles a week. Tried to keep eating the way I used to, but sometimes when time was short we'd make spaghetti again or something like that. Even these small concessions meant that, as always, I started gaining again. My intake was maybe around 2000 calories and I was still running a decent bit a week, but it didn't matter, and you know what? That shit wears you down after a while, and it becomes harder to force yourself to keep doing it when you're losing the battle anyway. So you stop running, and the slow gain speeds up, and one day you realize you're bigger than you've ever been because virtually none of your clothes fit anymore. And now you have to go back to eating severely restricted meals most of the time, and running again, but you know what? Now you're close to 40, so your body is more resistant to shedding weight than ever before, and now your knees (already had one creaky knee dating back to surgery 12 years ago) fucking hurt just walking around, and your back hurts now too because you're fucking fat.
So yes, it IS within anyone's power to control their weight. I absolutely agree with that. And I'm sure there are plenty of people who are completely full of shit when they claim that their genetics or metabolism or whatever keeps them from losing weight. But don't you DARE tell me that it's "a little harder" for some people than others, because unless you have been through what I've been through you haven't got the slightest goddamned idea what you're talking about. I didn't set out to rant like this, but this is a serious thing for me, something I've struggled with for most of my life, and it's got nothing to do with "fat acceptance" - you think I don't know what I look like? Shit, I wouldn't go to the beach now if you paid me because I know exactly how awful I look. Any fatass who tries to claim fat is beautiful is indeed a liar - do any of them lust after fellow fatties? Of course not, they dream about the same people anyone else does.
But it still is much, much harder for some than others.
Wouldn't you know it, 1993 was the year they invented high fructose corn syrup AND gluten.
Quote:
Wouldn't you know it, 1993 was the year they invented high fructose corn syrup AND gluten.
But the chart couldn't more clearly show that 1976 was the year the trend began, not 1993.
And again, i'm not sure what "we have become a more obese society" has to do with a verbal assault on another person who is overweight. How do you know how hard it is for this specific individual to keep her weight off? and even if she could, how is it Britt's right to comment on it?
And yup- I didn't find it particularly difficult to shed almost 50lbs a few years ago. I worked out 6days a week for ~1 1/2hrs a day (1 cycle of P90X), stopped drinking except a few on weekends or special occasions, and stopped eating fast food more that once or twice a month.
It was difficult the first few weeks (mostly getting used to only drinking coffee and water, and the actual workouts), but after I settled into a schedule it was easy.
The whole idea of "naturally skinny" people not having to work to lose weight is also for the most part crap. I used to buy into me being one of those until I started gaining weight. At first I blamed it on turning 35. Looking back it may have had a little to do with age, but it had much more to do with me spending most of my time at work behind a desk, drinking, eating like shit, and being waaay less active.
Yeah, of course not everyone who is overweight just sits in front of the TV drinking coke and eating Doritos- that was hyperbole. But it still comes down to simply burning more calories than you take in. Then once you get there, you maintain and keep it even. Some folks find that incredibly difficult, I get that. But many of those folks come up with outrageous excuses for why that doesn't work, including lying to themselves about both consumption and excercise.
Not to mention of course non-existant medical conditions, genetics (which do play a role, but it is incredibly overblown), and age (which yeah, plays a role a bit bigger than genetics).
Most of the time those skinny people that you think have it so easy keeping weight off feel like it's easy simply because of their lifestyle.
Nobody can sit around all day at work and home even with a realatively healthy diet and not gain weight- it's a myth, and unfortunately the "metabolism" and "genetics" myths are widely accepted making them that much more damaging.
I was a professional ballet dancer and now I enjoy running, biking and lifting. I've gone through quite a few up and down stretches with my weight. Originally I had not clue what I was doing. My diet scary bad. At period in time my diet consisted almost entirely of slim fast, 1 or 2 bananas and rice cakes. I'd go through my day with typical intensive workout, and end up in this light headed with a heavy level of shaking, and the only way out was to eat mass quantity of food, absolutely no sugar. It was crazy.
Eventually I figured things out. Three things WORK GREAT for me are cutting out the sugary treats completely, avoid the processed crap, and significantly cutting the carbs in general. Here's the HUGE thing I have found. Once I've gotten used to this, I was able to almost entirely rid myself of the cravings. And when I did indulge, it was by far unsatisfying. Eating a burrito became really unappetizing. I seriously will get a bloated, yuk kind of feeling. Even having a fast food breakfast sandwich in the morning was very unappetizing. All that sodium nitrate and the heavily processed crap was terrible.
I really think a big mistake with most diets, is this reward bullshit. The whole "well I worked out and only eat xyz today, so now I've earned a treat". It doesn't work. You still always have that damn treat on your mind. It's a constant effort to resist the temptation. Smartest thing I ever did was to knock out that crap altogether, and now I don't crave it, period.
It's not just psychological, there's a whole metabolic process that is at the heart of 90% of it. When you have, a relatively normal level of sugar and carb intake, when you exercise your body is going to resist converting fat to energy. The carbs and sugar make you produce insulin, and the insulin makes it very difficult. You'll work out real hard and have mad cravings for carbs. This actually happened to me once, in very clear way. The first time I ran 6 miles, I got home and COULD NOT satisfy my cravings. I eat a regular chicken diner with taters and veggies. Then I thought I'd treat (the mistake I refered to earlier) myself to one of those small pudding snacks. Well, I ended up eating 5 of them. Then I had a banana protein shake, and still hungry I eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. This was all in the matter of 3 hours.
After I learned about the sugar and carbs, and successfully cut out the treats and significantly reduced the carbs, I wan't having the cravings anymore. None.
Just thought I'd share.
bc,
I got into it in college and then I performed for 6 years. Guys can start later in life, as I did. It's not uncommon. I made it up to apprentice with a good regional company. Which is equivalent to the guy you call up from AAA ball when you need some good defense and extra speed on the bases ;)
Don't you think we would have heard something from Brit's camp if that were the case?
And no - you do not have a right to give a stranger a hard time about their weight. Under any circumstances. I don't care if its "under their control" (it may ... or may not.. be)

Maybe, but once the Twitter harpies descend "I'm sorry" is the best course of action regardless of a back story. You can stand up for yourself without insulting someone's appearance.
Yeah...but even her "I'm sorry" lacked any form of actual contrition. It was merely a PR "I'm sorry" to quiet the Twitterverse, although I'm not sure that it actually did.
And I agree that there are many things you can do to stand up for yourself (even in the face of personal insult) without resorting to personal insult on your part, especially knowing that you were being recorded.
