The difference between an excellent and a great draft often comes with who you take in rounds 3-5.
The 49ers struck gold with Chris Borland in the 3rd round. He showed Pro Bowl form right-away. He decided to retire after his rookie year, but that doesn't take away from his accomplishments and the promise he showed.
In my mock, I was very impressed with DE ZaDarius Smith from Kentucky (who was overshadowed by Bud Dupree). In many ways he reminds me of ex Giants 1st round pick Mathias Kiwanuka

But, the steal of the Century could very well be TCU linebacker Paul Dawson, who didn't do well at the combine, but man does he ever make plays ! (Remember how Brandon Spikes was slower than molasses at the combine but continued his excellent college play with the Patriots)

Everything says he can't play in the NFL, except film - the guy just makes plays.
So you want to invest a high pick in a year of deep talent on a player who doesn't have measurables at a position that we don't value much in a year when superb players should be available at positions of need that we value highly.
Don't let John Mara hear that, he'll fire Reese and beg you to come on board and right his ship. Don't mean to be caustic, just seems like very flawed logic.
Smith was team captain - therefore, I can see the Giants front office taking a serious look at him.
Dawson wasn't a team captain, but he's the real deal when it comes to a "real football player". Would love to see him in Blue
Various combines just show an athletes physical attributes....Wonderlic's just show if an athlete had sewing classes or math classes in college....video's are stacked with highlights of the player, not the lowlights(I mean you can make a highlight reel of Sintim's one sack, by showing it from various angles.....just don't show the part where he wasn't blocked)....
It's a team's own scouting system, that can make or break a draft.....you can't go to games and see all these guys.....it comes down to watching hours and hours of game films of these guys in action.....how strong was the competition? Did the player take advantage of another teams mistakes? Was it a scheme that made the player look good? When the game was on the line, what did the player do? In the fourth quarter, was the player as effective as he was in the first?
The scouts basically set the values for for the draft.....our scouts seem to have missed on players after the second round......
