NFT: When the Mets are Winning

Ralph.C : 12:32 am
The Mets being bad for extended periods of time is a complete energy-drain. Do I consider myself an overall baseball fan? Sure. But when the Mets are out of contention, my interest in the game is at about 10% capacity.

However, as miserable as those times are, they make the potential of seasons like this "off-the-charts" exhilarating and I accept the trade-off. You can't be a Met fan without the ability to unconditionally love.

I believe that my fellow Met fans know what I mean.

New York certainly loves the Yankees but when the Mets get going they capture the City in another way. The Yankees are the baseball pride of the City. That pride comes from the rich tradition of winning championships. The Mets, however, seem to capture the heart of the City when they win, and since they only do so every once in a while, it's special and it electrifies the town.

I'd like to see a Harvey mural on that building outside the Lincoln Tunnel like this one used to be!

Let's Go Mets!

I think you captured it. In addition, when the Mets are in the WS, it is usually in more dramatic circumstances than the norm.

All the losing makes the winning sweeter. (Same can be said for the Giants, for me anyway.) You see all the fans at Citi Field last night. We Mets fans are a hopeful bunch.
The thing is
Headhunter : 7:27 am : link
our window is not open yet. We have just unlocked the window locks. There is younger good talent percolating in the minors that will help sustain a run if the key arms stay healthy. With continued signings like Vlad Guerrero's nephew to a record Met International signing and productive drafts the Mets can develope a conga line from Rookie Ball to the Majors and have continued long term success. Enjoy the ride.

I still remember what happened in 2008 and 2009
This is only the tip of the iceberg
ZGiants98 : 7:43 am : link
The team isn't firing on all cylinders whatsoever yet. Half the lineup is in an ice old slump. David Wright is on the DL. It will be months before Syndergaard and Matz are considered for the rotation and the bullpen should only get better with more pieces coming back later.

If we stay relatively healthy from this point on, I think this team could dominate this summer.

And we are setup for the next ten years. Every level is stocked with talent. We aren't coming down off this high for a while.

Sure. We might have our hearts broken but in those situations the team was dying. Delgado was on the way out, ect. This team is young and on the rise

is it is being done mostly with all kids. There is nothing better than watching a young talented baseball player from your team come into his own. We have that in spades with both pitching and surprisingly some position players as well. Harvey, DeGrom, Wheeler, Montero, Familia, Legares, D'Arnaud, Duda, Flores with Thor, Matz, Nimmo, Comforto, Smith and others yet to come. It is going to be a really nice ride over the next few years!!!!

that could possibly be pieces Leathersich who has not walked people but is K'ing people. Ahmed Rosario who is a scouts wet dream. Johan Urena, Marcos Molina, Luis Guillorme who can play In the Majors today as a SS and would be in the top 5 defensively and is surprisingly hitting. Champ Stuart boom or bust, but if he booms will be a game changer. And TJ Rivera who is the best hitter in AA who was not drafted and considered a non prospect will be a 4th outfielder. I have more, but you get the idea. Before someone tells me, I know in 3 years they could all be out of baseball.

I'm a Yankee fan and I agree with this...

Most of my friends/family are Met fans and it's just different when the Mets are doing well. There's a different kind of excitement. I like it and that's why I always like when the Mets are going good.

The "Mets" energy was incredible.
We have have been quietly sitting on our hands waiting for our time to come again for too long
The Mets fans were a little louder then normal fans in the 3rd game in April.
Just the prospect of a winning season is enough for us.

likes and underdog.

the Patriots face Yankees syndrome to some extent, you win so much you get a large fan base, but also a large contingent that hates to see you win.

Right now the Mets have more pity than hate, but if they can sustain winning, that pity turns to hate pretty quickly (sports hate of course) and I can't wait until that happens.

I can't wait to stop getting pity texts from my Sox and Yankees fan friends and family. "Hey, the Mets won on opening day" "hey if the season ended today the Mets win the division" "this harvey kid is good, can't wait to see him on the Yankees" - so condescending. LOL. Doesn't bother me, but it's obvious.
I'm a Giants/Rangers/Mets/Knicks guy...

So the Mets are my only team that has been playing 2nd fiddle most of my life and it's such a different dynamic. I actually agree with this post completely.

Being at the park this year just felt so much different. There's an aura around this team.. optimism for the first time in a long time, a really positive energy. It feels weird watching Met games now and feeling like they can win any one.

We're only 11 games in and we know all too well how this team has had a penchant for disappointing so I'm certainly not making any long-term proclamations here. It's just nice to know that the dark cloud is finally fucking gone and the Mets are making their way back into legitimacy/relevancy.
I watched every game this week.
Ten Ton Hammer : 10:59 am : link
I kind of surprised myself, but it's quite infectious.
I disagree with we know this team has a
Headhunter : 11:42 am : link
penchant for disappointing. There are at least 23 new players from the last teams that spit the bit down the stretch. This team is this team
Regardless of who was on those teams..
arcarsenal : 11:46 am : link
The way 2007 and 2008 ended followed by six straight seasons of basically non-competitive, shitty baseball is fresh enough in every Met fans minds and has taken a toll on a lot of us. Madoff, losing, all the other nonsense.. it was embarrassing.

I am very excited about this team and the future of the Mets but you can't expect people to not be cautious in their optimisms. We've seen a lot of disappointment.

Really well stated. Couldn't agree more.
After these past years of frustration and anger I find myself suddenly captivated by the terrific start to the 2015 season and I find myself watching every single game.
arc I agree

but you can't lay your disappointment at the feet of this 35 man roster they did nothing to merit disappointment or praise

Of course not, and I don't..

I realize this is an entirely different set of players save for basically David Wright.

Just trying not to get ahead of myself.
Why not?

when the Mets are bad I'm only nominally interested in baseball. They've been bad for a while now, so for me its very nice to have baseball back with them being good (so far) again.
Truth be told
Headhunter : 12:44 pm : link
if I didn't allow myself to go all in, then when they disappoint, I wouldn't feel
shitty and I don't want to give up my passion good or bad. I'll say dumb things when they lose a game they had won. If they lose every game this year, I'll still be there. I'm all in and have been for a long time. LGM!!
I don't think fear of disappointment and
larryflower37 : 1:25 pm : link
Met Fan can go together.
The Mets disappoint more then they win.
That makes the winning much sweeter.

As Met fans we handle losing in stride and continue to have hope.

So enjoy the winning and lets hope it ends in a parade and Harvey on a building at the entrance to the Lincoln tunnel.

Part of the typical misery of the Mets fan is why even the small successes get overblown.

I mean, Harvey was a super hero after 1 month of 2012 and a dominant 4 months in 2013. A lot of other franchises don't go overboard with that.

I'm not saying I'm any less guilty of it than any other Mets fan, it's just we're so I want to say desperate, but that's not the right word, but I'll use it anyway, we're so desperate for positivity even small successes are overblown a little.

Most fans are what I'd call cautiously optimistic at this point - except ZG - he's all in. And some of the fans are right behind him. others are still burned from 2006 - 2008.
It wasn't Met fans that put Matt Harvey on the cover
Headhunter : 4:41 pm : link
of Sports Illustratedand dubbed him the Dark Knight of Gotham. It wasn't Met fans that named him to start the All Star Game. I'd like to think the Met fans I know, know the difference between shit and shinola of the field. I don't think we pump ourselves because we are used to watching an inferior product. I think we are smart enough to add 2 plus 2 and come up with 4 when we see an improved product. We are not emotional cripples. I was able to get excited in 1969 because 1968 gave me signs. I got excited in 1984 so when 1986 came I didn't say pinch me can this be true? Give us more credit than being the damaged second citizens sharing NYC with the Yankees
These years -- like 84-85, 99, 2005
jpkmets : 4:48 pm : link
are great fun -- when you can see a baseball team with promise, but the press and fans around the league aren't totally sold on them, when your team has a chance to really shock the world.

Nice post by the OP. This year is going to be Amazing, and the window should be only just opening.

I do, and you're right, I'm just saying like you'd expect after losing so long, positive news is more welcome than otherwise. And forgetting about SI, a lot of Mets fans I talk to have Harvey in the HOF. He's among the most dominant pitchers I've ever seen, but he needs to do it for longer before I throw him in with the ATG's I've seen. I think you were even slightly guilty of this when you were comparing Harvey to Gooden (and I know you weren't comparing them anything more than delivery, but still it's my perception).

steve in ky : 6:57 pm : link
That probably has changed a little with the passing of time but the Mets always create excitement when things go right.

As for myself I always enjoy each season and try my best to watch every game. Win or lose I am a baseball fan and the Mets are my team I have never stopped watching them. IMO watching the down years only makes the winning seasons that much sweeter when they happen.
It's obviously too early to put Harvelous in Cooperstown
But you know special when you see it, and it's reflected in how the guy fills seats every time he's pitching. Only the best of the best do that. The last time the Mets fan had something like that, it was Pedro's first year here.
jpk--you're right
exiled : 4/19/2015 8:09 am : link
Those seasons--1985 et al--were so exciting. The year *before* the real expectations set in.
I think it goes back to
Headhunter : 4/19/2015 8:59 am : link
1962. They made a 120 loss team watchable with a great cast of characters from Casey Stengel to the players. We accepted what we got and rolled with it. The players were never booed, there were no calls for boycotts or fire Casey or trade so and so. They were our team and we were the butt of national jokes and really didn't give a shit. When they won in 1969, expectations changed, and along with it, losing wasn't acceptable. What was ingrained and passed along was you were a Met fan for life and the highs and lows were part of the deal.I don't regret 1 day in the 53 years they have been in existence that I am a Met fan
