First, they're having him play second in the MLB manner, complete with shifts & right-field depth against power lefties. He looked good, even displaying plus range to his right over the bag, then throwing a true one-hop to one to nail the batter.
At the plate, he had what I call an impressive 1-5. He was on every pitch thrown, reading the spin instantly & getting the bat on every pitch. 2 hard fouls., never off-balance, feet spread wide in the DiMaggio stance which will keep him back on off-speed pitches. Better base-runner than I figured, leading off 3.5 strides instead of the customary 2.5, not afraid to get picked off. He executes the cross-over & dive back to 1. He got around the bases on a double + error, scoring from first. I think he will be up by Memorial Day.
Otherwise, Heathcott exhibited his tool set , leading off the game with a fastball he types to right, and then successfully sacrificing in the 10th, bunting hard to 5 with runners & first and second. Down note: it is easy to get to his hands on hard stuff inside. He will break a lot of bats, but that can be said of many guys. Flores made a beautiful adjustment on an 0-2 pitch, getting good wood to 8 on what turned out to be the game-winning Sac line-out.
As for the pitchers, Whitley was stretched to 90 with no discernible problems. He missed when he wanted to miss and threw strikes of good quality. The second guy who was Rudabaker or something like that will be undergoing shoulder surgery in the near future. Long, gangly loop that has the ball almost touching the ground after his break. Ramirez threw nothing but heat, but judging by the reactions of Syracuse's batters, he must have been pretty straight. Lungren is ready for the Yankees. He has a curve & slider that he throws for a high strike percentage & he can make the slider disappear on lefties.
Lastly Rommine, who I never liked, had a beautiful game throwing cruise missiles to second , right on the bag. More importantly both Whitley & Lundgren trusted him in the dirt. He probably should be somewhere in MLB as a quality back-up C.
Ramon Flores had his 4th HR today, which leads the org. If the power has finally shown up he becomes a very good prospect.
It's actually 9 games. :=)
12-14 in SB attempts and I haven't seen him, but looking at the stats he's shown a good approach at the plate with 6 BBs in 9 games and a .410 OBP.
