I never understood "suicide watch". Why bother?

Phil in Joisey : 4/18/2015 2:51 pm
Sports Sports Illustrated
Report: Aaron Hernandez is on suicide watch
The former Patriot who was sentenced to life in prison this week is reportedly now on suicide watch at the facility where he's being held.
Isolated from the inmate population.
I agree

People often use the argument that life in prison is cheaper than capital punish, went, but I have to believe that suicide is the cheapest of all, right?

he gets to work his way up to be the king of the prison yard.

it's lawsuit related. If the prison doesn't undertake precautionary measures for somebody who is thought to be suicidal, I suspect the family could sue for neglect.

Because the sentence is one of custody

Not neglect and/or further punishment.
They ought to supply him

with the rope.
My question is...
BlackLight : 4/18/2015 4:43 pm : link
What has to happen for him to be taken off "suicide watch?"

Other than killing himself, I mean.

I just don't know what to say. So I guess I'll just make the next thin to no statement at all.
Couldn't agree more.

Don't take his shoe laces, give him stronger ones.
Oh Man,
grizz299 : 4/18/2015 7:38 pm : link
There's a tragedy there, something so wrong from something so right.

And to be so miserable that you'd commit suicide or contemplate it....
I can't find anything funny or redeeming in the story.
I am sorry for him, to have had so much, to fall so far, to be young and famous and rich, popular and Idolized and to come to this. Life in a cage with no chance for parole. Oh my goodness!

Thanks?
Many view life in prision as a harder sentence than a quick death

That logic why protect any inmates from harm. Just let them go at each other as long as they don't escape
I agree...

I agree. When you read about serial killers or murderers the common theme is a simple disregard for the sanctity of life.

Resources shouldn't really be devoted to stop them when they choose to take their own.

It is drastically different than stopping prison riots.

Nothing else to be said IMO. Sums it up right there.
Still hate this quote feature by the way

splits this poster's quote into the header of mine, and then the quote box.
I think pop gun was right

But using a more extreme line of reasoning akin to some of the posts here maybe it is important to some relatives to have their revenge and suicide in some way cheats them out of that?

My two cents.

Why bother? Because, in the main, we are not animals like most/many of the criminals we incarcerate..That's not, hopefully, who WE are..I'm talking about the hard core murderers behind bars..It's why we give them their last meal. I mean, why bother right? It's why, if the "medications" we use during execution do not work, we stop and give the murderers a reprieve, at least until a decision is made as to how to proceed from there..

That's why we bother. It's called being human, even if those we're bothering with aren't..Imo
^^^^good post.

It's about valuing life.

The reason he's locked up to begin with is that we value life above all.

preventing suicide
bc4life : 4/19/2015 9:24 am : link
actually serves both ends - protects the life of a human being and prevents him from evading his punishment - a life sentence.
Suicide watch...
manh george : 4/19/2015 12:02 pm : link
sends the message that we punish transgressors, but we aren't barbarians. (In our prison/death penalty system, that's debatable, but also another story.)

The headline "Prisoner hangs self while guards were away having tea" just doesn't go over well or send the right message. A just society values human life. Period.

Sending a convict to prison serves multiple purposes. Punishment is high on the list, along with protecting society. Vengeance is much lower on the list, as it should be.

A lot of good posts and positions in this thread.

Prison has to horrible regardless but to fall from so high for such stupid decisions is tough to grasp.

How does one get on suicide watch?
Mike in Long Beach : 4/20/2015 10:22 am : link
Is he automatically on after being sentenced to life in prison, or did he display some sort of behavior that seems suicidal?
