NFT: PONO! Anyone have one?

yatqb : 4/18/2015 8:09 pm
Listened to a few recordings on PONO last night at 192kHz and was dazzled by the fullness of the sound. Even the 94 kHz recording I listened to was a very different experience than listening to a CD; so much richer and fuller sound. They even seemed richer than albums, but that be a function of the cartridges I bought back in the day (relatively expensive but certainly not top end).

Thoughts?

If you do an A B test, you will always prefer the LOUDER music
Marty in Albany : 4/19/2015 12:08 am : link
It is a often hard to guarantee that you will have equal loudness to insure a fair A B test.

Do you need $200 Monster Cables to enjoy this music?

yatqb, I got mine last year during the Kickstarter project

(Pearl Jam Autographed Edition). I also have a Fiio X5. There is a huge difference (to my ears) listening to 24 bit files using Pono/Fiio.As you know I'm a huge Bruce fan & the release of live concerts like 12-31-80 & 12-31-75 have blown me away. Pono's shape actually is good at either holding in your hand or putting on a counter. If you are testing the waters for the first time & don't want to spend the cash on a Pono, Fiio came out recently with their X1 which you can get on Amazon for only $99.Both use Micro Memory cards. You can find plenty of sales on 64GB & the price of 128GB is starting to come down.
Thanks, Mick.

That's not a good test. The average person doesn't appreciate/hear differences in sound enough to pay 350 for an upgrade. That's why most people use their phone and are happy with 128 kb MP3.

A better test is among people who do appreciate higher fidelity (and so obviously do think they can hear a difference).
I agree with Chris r.

Just like all the dumb studies and taste tests done with plebes and gourmet food- they're worthless.

Only a true appreciator of gourmet food can appreciate gourmet food. Regular folks not being able to tell the difference between "regular" and "high quality" proves nothing. Only those with discerning tastes can tell the real difference.

Are you claiming that a musician and a non-musician have the same ability to differentiate between different sounds? Maybe stick to bragging about your sexploits?

Do musicians have different ears than the rest of us? Bigger ear muscles?

Sure in a general sense you are correct that different folks have different levels of hearing.

Ahh...that moment when you question someone else's

I'll bet that chris r has a My Little PONO.

You, of course, are free to blind test it

yourself.

The above is a test between 16 bit and 8 bit
Wuphat : 4/19/2015 10:37 pm : link
I could not find one yet for 24 bit, but the premise is the same.
Wu, wouldn't it be hard to do this test when playing something
yatqb : 4/19/2015 10:41 pm : link
through a computer's speakers? And would the computer be a reasonable intermediary when plugged into an amp connected to high end speakers, or would that in itself diminish any differences in sound quality?
The test would yield comparative results
Wuphat : 4/20/2015 7:19 am : link
even if you used the very best sound card and high end headphones.

Similar to the "garbage in, garbage out" concept, the source material is the most important factor.
