NFT: Yanks talk 4-19

superspynyg : 10:43 am
Great win by the Yanks last night. Tanaka pitched like he did prior to his injury last year. 7ip 0ER 2hits and 8k's. Yanks steam roll the Rays 9-0.

Now we are only 2 games back in the east. If we can figure out some other pieces (SS production, cut back on errors etc.) We have a shot to compete.
Well....

The Offense
looie : 11:31 am : link
A week ago, everyone was crying about how this team has no offense. Well, how about 37 runs in the past 6 games? I've said all along that if this team can stay relatively healthy (admittedly a big if), they will hit. And how about 17 HRs already, tied for 1st in MLB. They certainly have holes but if they can stay intact, they will challenge for the AL East crown.
Question
Ten Ton Hammer : 11:32 am : link
and even though I'm a mets fan, I am not asking this in a way to provoke some kind of response.

I was watching the game recap on MLB.com, which showed all of Tanaka's strikeouts. The TV gun had him at 92, but I can't tell if it was the YES feed or the Tampa feed. Is that accurate? I thought he was a mid-90s guy last season.

42 runs in the past 6 games. Even better.
he's lost a bit off his fastball post-injury

I think a better read on Tanaka will be on Thursday
TheMick7 : 11:45 am : link
vs Tigers Last night, he had a lot of young, inexperienced hitters fishing on pitches that the more experienced hitters on the Blue Jays/Red Sox had been laying off of. Tigers will be similar. he still isn't going up in the zone, only middle, down. The difference in his speed is him not throwing the 4 seamer. Now with that out of his repertoire, hitters have an easier time zoning up! I hope we see like results on Thursday & if we do, maybe he is indeed back!

Good point on the 4 seamer.
Tanaka is still building arm strength
manh george : 11:55 am : link
He only pitched something like 14 innings in spring training, as the Yankees were understandably cautious.

I think it is reasonable to expect that, if his arm really is healed, he will add another yard or two to his fastball over the next few starts.

Whether it was the right thing to do or not, I think that fact that Girardi sent him back out for the seventh after the long delay while the Yankees batted around plus suggests that the team feels he is fully healed. They had him throw on the side while the Yankees were batting to keep him warm, and they wanted to add to his pitch count in order to build arm strength.

I will always applaud a good effort. I am still wary of our starting pitching but its nice to see Tanaka pitch well. The key is to build on the win and improve the areas that need help.
Severino and Mitchell
Phil in LA : 12:41 pm : link
are both pitching today.
Tanaka is a stud
RasputinPrime : 12:47 pm : link
but he is a stud who is working his way back and learning to pitch with a major injury. It is going to be stressful to watch all year.
Pineda without his A game today

What's with all the MY9 games this year?
BigBlueShock : 1:42 pm : link
We've had Monday games, Tuesday games, Friday games and Sunday games on MY9 this year. Has their contract changed? It seems excessive compared to in the past.

It's not much of a big deal, except I don't get MY9 in HD, if anyone even does, and I feel like I'm watching the games in the '80's. It's awful. If they insist on showing the games, they can at least offer us HD for cryin out loud.
Only thing
more frustrating than having your leadoff speed guy get a single & then get thrown out stealing is when the batter gets a hut on the very next pitch.
hit*
Sorry.

this week will be a huge test for this offense. Price, Harvey and Degrom we will see 3 out of 4 games. Huge test for this team coming up

good job by Betances
let's close it out.
Miller looking good.
section125 : 4:51 pm : link
Pitching staff is really tall. Murphy looks like a midget next to Pineda, Miller, Wilson, Betances.....

Didn't hit well today but nice sweep of the Rays & up to .500.
Miller has been incredible
Good to see Betances look a little stronger as well.

6-6, back to .500

Betances is in love with the off speed stuff. Wonder if the fastball isn't moving so he isn't using it as much. He's looks a lot better than last week.
Nice win...
Dunedin81 : 5:25 pm : link
team played pretty well this series even if the competition level isn't that high. Pitching is fine, defense was going to get better, some of the offensive outcomes were going to get better. Now to sustain this success we're going to need to get good outcomes from 3-4-5 and we're going to need to stay healthy. And while Didi wasn't brought here for his bat he needs to be hitting around .220 to not hear footsteps.
Nice sweep this weekend
djm : 5:39 pm : link
They needed it
BTW Clarkin is on the 7-day DL in Tampa...
Dunedin81 : 5:41 pm : link
it was initially described as innings control but now it is described as elbow inflammation. Whether it is something serious or not remains to be seen, but with our injury luck - and that of the rest of baseball - this season I have trouble being optimistic.
Betances isn't in love with the off-speed stuff.
manh george : 5:50 pm : link
He was waiting on his arm strength and mechanics, which now appear to be back. Expect him to go with the hard stuff a lot more in the future.

Yeah that was a bad choice of words, but he is still shying away from the FB. He threw six to one of the Rays today. He throws great breaking balls and off speed stuff.

Geez - threw six straight breaking balls.....
BTW Pineda with a nice recovery...
Dunedin81 : 6:20 pm : link
that's what good pitchers do, they keep teams in games even without their best stuff.
Anyone
mitch300 : 6:38 pm : link
Know the status of Pirela.
Betances
PaulN : 6:49 pm : link
Is throwing his fastball at 94 - 96 right now, if I recall he may have been a tad faster last season at this time, but then again, he was not used very much the first month either, so I would not worry about his velocity just yet. The much more important thing is his command is getting better. Probably that means his mechanics are getting better also, he is a huge man with a huge pitching motion, so he needs a little time, Miller looks great though, very smooth.

Taking BP, likely to get back into games soon. The question is whether he's on track for an MLB job when he's done. Temptation would be to say no, but Petit has been pretty awful.
A constant 94-96 mph is plenty
section125 : 6:56 pm : link
good enough with that off speed stuff he has. When he gets back to 97-98 it's gravy.
Thanks Dunedin
mitch300 : 7:25 pm : link
That's why I'm asking. He can't be any worse than Petite.
Miller vs Robertson
bitterblue : 9:57 pm : link
I like them both but I sure feel more confident with Miller, so far.

The key is to realize it's a 162 game season and not fixate on one game at a time. And of course they are trying to improve every day, just like every team is.
