UCLA DE Owamagbe Odighizuwa

Big Rick in FL : 4/19/2015 5:52 pm
Only one word after watching him. WOW!!!!!! He is going to be the best DE/EDGE rusher in this entire draft if he is drafted to play DE in a 4-3. Sy had him ranked as his 3rd pass rusher and said he would be a top 8 player overall if he knew he was healthy. KWALL put me onto him.

I've watched every single video I could find on the guy. I've read a ton of articles on him. The man is an absolute beast. Almost unblockable at times. Good height & weight, long arms, huge hands and insane athleticism for a guy his size.

His Sack #s weren't insane, but he was mostly playing as a 3-4 DE in the UCLA defense. He is a beast when it comes to stopping the run. I think he has potential to reach JPP level in that area. Also think he can easily be a 12-15 Sack a year player. Read an article with quotes from Owa that said his medical stuff came back great and teams weren't worried about it being an issue. If that is the case I really don't see how he makes it to 9. He's a far more athletic Justin Tuck. Bored watching these basketball games so I wanted to get a discussion going on him. If the Giants take him at 9 the whole world is going to be shocked, but I feel he is completely worth the pick. I feel he is good enough to start from day 1 in New York. Any opinions on him?
The whole world shocked?

Not Kwall...
How did he do 1 on 1 vs Peat?
BlueLou : 4/19/2015 6:02 pm : link
I heard Peat did very well vs Anthony Barr in 2013... Did Odi match up vs Peat ever?
It's a health thing...

no he wasn't the most productive guy, though there is some very positive tape, but the real issue with picking him at 9 is the hips. Are they going to limit him going forward? Is that a risk you can run with your highest draft pick in years? At 40 sure, at 9 I think it's tough.
I love this guy...
M.S. : 4/19/2015 6:33 pm : link
...but what is his position?

A DE or a 3-4 rush linebacker?

I also think he's got a ways to go before he reaches his ceiling -- translation, I'm not sure he comes in and contributes as much as one would expect from a #9 player.

Still, ya gotta like him.
He is 100% a 4-3 DE

They don't make them like him anymore. He physically reminds me of Tuck.
If it wasn't for his hip surgeries

He would have been my favorite choice for #9 assuming Cooper doesn't fall there.

But isn't that the point as it pertains to the 9 spot? He's had what, 4 hip surgeries? Given this team's hellish bouts with IR and season-long injuries, do you really want this guy?
He has had 2 hip surgeries, both in 2013.
cosmicj : 4/19/2015 6:51 pm : link
The second is the one to be concerned about.

Thanks. Thought I read 2 on each

way at #9. At 40, probably yes, and he'd certainly be on the short list. But my guess is that he doesn't get to #40.

I couldn't find much of him going against Stanford. I doubt they played him against Peat much though. Stick him on the other side against the weaker OT.

According to Owa he was told by the NFL medical people who I assume told teams that the hip was not a problem moving forward. We will most likely not hear anything about it prior to the draft.

NFLDraftScout has him as a mid-late first rounder now. If his hips check out he has to be in the discussion at 9. If healthy give me him over everybody not named Amari Cooper at 9. (Would probably take Williams over him, but I doubt that he is there)
The ninth pick

is not the time to be gambling on a player who may have a career shortening injury. Sure that is a factor in his consideration by us.

Seen him plenty against USC. Was a highly rated recruit for the Bruins and didn't disappoint. Gained about 40 pounds after high school and really can run even with the added weight. He can hold the edge and get after the passer and he will be able to get to the outside against the read option.
The bottom line is that you just can't pick this player at #9 after two hip surgeries. If we trade down and select him? Count me in.
What was his injury? Soft tissue or bone?
Boy Cord : 4/19/2015 8:47 pm : link
Have any NFLers had a similar injury and surgery? The man sure does look the part, and we could use a new DE with a name that everyone butchers.

Without any of the details of the O O case, any general thoughts on hip injuries / surgeries as far as being chronic or career limiting?

Yeah it is 2 but still at #9 absolutely not. With a trade down or two I would love the pick if it happened in the 20's and the Giants have picked up a package of at least a 2nd and a 3rd and maybe a mid round pick this or two either this year or next. If he falls into round 2 I would be all for a trade up to secure his rights.
I wonder if the story of his dad will scare enough teams...

On January 16, 2002, 43-year-old Peter Odighizuwa, a Nigerian former student at the Appalachian School of Law, arrived on the campus. While numerous reports stated that Odighizuwa had flunked out of school or had been suspended, Jeremy Davis, former dean and professor of law at the school, later said that Odighizuwa had withdrawn voluntarily due to poor academic performance.

Odighizuwa first discussed his academic problems with professor Dale Rubin, where he reportedly told Rubin to pray for him. Odighizuwa then walked to the offices of Dean Anthony Sutin and Professor Thomas Blackwell, where he opened fire with a .380 ACP semi-automatic handgun.

According to a county coroner, powder burns indicated that both victims were shot at point blank range. Also killed along with the two faculty members was a student, Angela Denise Dales, age 33. Three other people were wounded.

Nobody is going to remove him from their draft board because of it, but if it's between him and a similarly graded prospect who's father isn't a paranoid schizophrenic doing time for mass-murder......

One can assume his surgery was arthroscopic
Rjanyg : 4/19/2015 10:57 pm : link
Probably a labural tear repair, loose bodies removed or bone spurs shaved down. Other procedures are hip resurfacing, which I have had done, or a total hip replacement which would prevent him from playing football..

Not sure I would touch him at 9. In fact, we need to nail our first 3-4 picks so unless it was very minor procedure, I wouldn't have him on the board until the 3rd round pick.
hips can be the death knell
blapre74 : 4/19/2015 11:10 pm : link
George Adams was a first round rb out of Kentucky; he had to retire because of bad hips. Bo Jackson, too. I am not sure if this guy Odi, has degenerative bad hips, or just broke them. Interesting write up and player.
I would pass

This is the Giants we're talking about...."Medic!."Still if he is red-flagged for the hip, I think it should be in place whether 9 or 40. However, if he is cleared, he's cleared.
He would fill our quota for

DE's with complicated last names, now with Kiwi gone.
I think Peat is a better value at #9 than Odi.
Curtis in VA : 4/20/2015 10:44 am : link
I do like him though. If he somehow managed to drop to #40 it would be a no brainer.

I know it was over 10 years ago but Tuck was projected as a 1st rounder, with a nickname like "The Freak." Yet he still slipped to round three because of similar circumstances. Who knows...
KWALL, myself and others have talked about him since last Fall

but maybe the injury thing scares Reese away and they try and grab him in round 2. I doubt he slips that far but it's happened before.
Not at 9
RB^2 : 4/20/2015 5:57 pm : link
You can't ignore the injury history. Keep in mind that his workload will increase considerably in the NFL, which adds to the risk. If he's around at 40, then selecting him would make sense.
