Per PFT. I like Stevie & thought he flashed huge potential a few years ago. Can't be any worse then the Safeties had in his defense in 2007-2008. Stevie close with Giants - ( New Window )
But it's not as if this move drastically improves safety. Brown was great prior to his injury in Fewell's system. He got rewarded with a huge contract and gets hurt.
He had a bad year last year, especially early, when benched.
In a new system. healthier and still relatively young, and by all accounts a great team mate and model citizen, it's worth it as a flyer - but not much more then that.
It does help though to have a veteran in the back if he does sign.
when he gambled on the first pass of the year (thrown to Calvin Johnson no less), ended up there way late, body blocked the cornerback to clear a walk in to the end zone. I would rather they convert Dywane Harris to safety than play this guy. Thank God we cut Will Hill for smoking pot once and taking Adderal once.
Stevie is a proven guesser gambler, at a position where risk needs to

He got cut because he's a fucking Liar and his word is for shit.

Add to that WH was an unreliable jackass off the field, who basically threw away the several chances Giants gave to him.

No matter how many times I watch a clip of that video, I don't see the collision really playing a factor. Johnson was already well behind the CB. Brown just either misread the coverage or the route or took a terrible angle. Either way, he was well out of position and slow getting to the spot to boot.
His first season here he had a nice run with a number of INTs. but almost every one was the result of a very opportunistic situation. Either the QB threw it right to him or it was tipped right to him, etc. There were very few plays where he broke on the ball and made a play himself. He was not very good in coverage and it obviously didn't improve after a knee injury.
as though they all threw right into his arms..You mean to tell me, that over the last 50 plus years, Stevie Brown was the ONLY S who was in position for such opportunities? Let's not minimize what he accomplished, because in truth, no one else has had that "luck" thrown his way for as far back as I can remember..
That said, I would think he's depth unless, surprise, surprise, we again get hit hard by injuries..
Hopefully Spags can work with him and his speed hasn't been permanently reduced by the ACL surgery..
Not expecting anything one way or the other..Totally in wait-see mode
Obviously, plenty of other CBs and Ss have benefited from opportunistic situations. If it was just INTs, I wouldn't have concern. Why I am concerned is other than the INTs, he was not in position quite a bit. He is not very fast and not great in coverage. As depth, he is fine. As a starter, i expect more problems in the pass defense.

You're probably correct..Question is, has he always been slow to react(not comparing the two, but Everson Walls was slow as shit) or has the injury slowed him and his reaction time down? Just askin'
Playing FS means developing some new instincts, reading the action from further away, using different angles of pursuit, and he has doesn't have good closing speed on the receiver or to get sideline to sideline. Add those to the guesser gambler tendencies, and you've got a marginal prospect.
I forget the exact stats, but something like 4 or 5 of his INTs, and at least that many broken coverages downfield, were a result of the gambling.
If it's all blind luck, the Giants haven't had a player that lucky
since David Tyree for that one minute of his career.
I feel like dismissing his accomplishment as luck is pretty convenient. Will Allen wishes he had Stevie Brown's luck. Finishing the play when it comes to you is not something that's automatic.
I studied the videos (granted the limited ones we have access to)
and I played both safety positions, so I have an understanding of what he's doing versus what he should be doing, in many cases, even with a limited video view. When he was benched last year, a big part of the reason was he was repeatedly blowing assignments in the same manner as 2012. I call it guessing and gambling when reviewing some of his decisions, as I don't know if he simply guessed or misread the action. Perhaps it's partly scheme related, we know PF had a tendency to out-think situations. I'm not betting on it.
But, Stevie Brown won't dictate any personnel decisions at S, if I were the GM.
were the result of the QB overthrowing a basic seam or post route. He read the route pattern action correctly, but accurate throws in those instances were 20+ yard gainers. So, there was some luck, for example.
The blown coverages were zone looks where the CB handed the receiver off expecting deep help to Stevie's half or third, and there was none. Wrong read, bit on a fake, poor angle, couldn't recover, etc.
youre really gonna knock the safeties from 2007-2008
Gibril Wilson and James Butler were a starting pair on a team that shut down the greatest offense of all time in a super bowl victory (2007)
James Butler and Michael Johnson played excellent on the back end for a 2008 defense that was ranked #8 against the pass and intercepted as many passes as they gave up touchdowns.
Butler started 26 of the 28 games he played in during 2007-2008
Johnson started every game in 2008 and contributed heavily at safety and special teams in 2007
The only times gibril Wilson didnt have at least 90 tackles was his rookie season and his final year in the nfl when he only started one game.he was a big hitter and came up with several big plays in his NYG career.

Will Hill is a lost cause. WY, you're not an idiot, I'm at a loss why you fail to understand his release.
he was playing in a bad scheme that was almost impossible on the Safeties.

You've got to let this go, good Lord.
