NJ.com: Why some teams as a tackle, not strictly a guard

Eric from BBI : Admin : 4/21/2015 1:47 pm

The Giants are believed to be in the camp that considers Scherff a right tackle or guard. They held a private workout for Scherff several weeks back in Iowa that was attended by offensive line coach Pat Flaherty. There they saw the unique physical ability that likely has many teams believing his game can translate as a tackle playing in space.

Why some teams (including the Giants) look at Brandon Scherff as a tackle, not strictly a guard - ( New Window )
I keep hearing and reading, Eric, that he
That’s Gold, Jerry : 4/21/2015 1:56 pm : link
has to play guard because he is not a very good pass blocker. There is a lot of bad tape out there on him apparently in pass blocking situations.
Never read so much confusion and various opinions
Giants2012 : 4/21/2015 2:02 pm : link
for the perceived high draft picks as this year's draft class

- Both QB's have Questions
- The best HB tore his knee (Gurley)
- Nobody has an consistent opinion regarding any of these OLmen
- The DL is just as confusing as the OL with 235lb DE failing drug tests and the Dupree group being selected over the map
- Edge/Linebackers are a bunch of tweeners.
- The best safety can't cover IMO
- We have Trae at CB but it doesn't appear anybody wants him
- WR - everybody is looking for the next Beckham

Meanwhile, the Shaq Thompson category of player have fallen from a top 10 pick out of the first round.

I'm beginning to think Scheff might be a better TE than QB.
I'll repat, I don't care about guard or tackle. What I care about is
Victor in CT : 4/21/2015 2:02 pm : link
that he becomes a GREAT guard or tackle.

Have they come off Peat?
His name didn't come up
JonC : 4/21/2015 2:27 pm : link
perhaps the other two passed him during pro day phase.

So how do we get Cleveland to draft both #1's to the Giants so we may land both?
trade both

Thanks Jon!

Maybe they feel like the other two can move to Guard whereas Peat is strictly an OT...they do like flexibility on the OL.
They clearly want a dominant, physical wrecker infused
JonC : 4/21/2015 2:35 pm : link
and the offense needs it.

They absolutely do need to get meaner and more physical up front.
I've been a Scherrf guy since the jump

and haven't wavered at all. I think he's the guy if he's there at 9.

You followed up with a correction for misspelling "repeat". Then that post double posted (i.e. repeated itself). Was that intention? Not a critique. I just found it to be a amusing on a slow day.
I'm in the Scherff camp too - G or T I don't care
PatersonPlank : 4/21/2015 2:56 pm : link
This guy should become a beast at either. Let him and Pugh battle it out. In the end one plays G and one plays T, and we have a much improved OL that can hopefully run the ball.

No. got one of those stupid "wait 5 seconds message" and clicked twice

problem with Scherff at #9. Or Peat. Or Collins. Think #9 is too high for Flowers, but it's certainly defensible.

Scherff is a G/RT. Not sure about LT. Flowers might have the edge in that area, and may even be stronger. Just think Scherff is more ready to play. Agree that the Giants want to add an inside mauler. The running game was awful last year.

Think the Giants have them rated as follows:

Flowers.
Scherff.
Peat.
Collins.

Just a little while to go.
flip Flowers and Scherff

I am team scherff, but I see his warts too.
BeerFridge : 4/21/2015 3:30 pm : link
There's things I like about all those four listed. I will defer to the Giants being able to rank them better than I.

The good news is that all of those 4 would make the OL significantly better.

As a believer in Scherff and his ability to excel at multiple positions it is music to my ears to hear the Giants have him rated as their top O-Lineman in this class.

I'm also of the opinion once he settles in and gets to work in a pro setting he can possibly transition to LT in a couple of years. If David Diehl can play LT reasonably well Brandon Scherff can certainly do better imo.

Frankly it's past time the Giants woke up to the fact that our line is in desperate need of the toughness and point of attack impact Scherff and Flowers represent. Finesse blockers don't get it done in the NFC East.
As much as I feel it's a reach, I would understand the pick
Stupendamatic : 4/21/2015 7:27 pm : link
He would be a massive upgrade at LG over what we've had since Seubert retired.

I figured you and a healthy majority of BBI would be pleased, even with Flowers. I'd be happy with either monster, the offense needs him.

A hungry JPP, some growth on the defense among Prince/Kennard/Hankins/Ellis/safeties, a DE at #40 and fire it up.
I like both Scherff and Flowers. Both would be immediate starters
yatqb : 4/21/2015 7:33 pm : link
for us, although I think that of the two Flowers would suffer more growing pains. I even wonder whether Flowers would be better off inside in his first year in the pros...and believe he could do a good job there. When a guy is in front of him Flowers simply blows him up. Handling speed is a bit harder for him, but he has good feet (certainly good enough to be an effective pass blocking OT down the line) but they might serve him better at OG early on.
its much easier to get a mauling RT or G
chris r : 4/21/2015 7:41 pm : link
later in the draft than a top LT.

I really hope we pass on OL at 9.
