Why not sign him for more than one year I think he seems to be the TE for the near future, why not a two or three year contract. We signed quite a number of guys with most likely less upside than him during FA. If he has a solid to good year the dollar numbers he will be looking at could make it a tough signing for us. I know there are reasons to be cautious but sometimes you can throw caution to the wind to gain in the end.
They want to see if he can step up; as in: catch better, not fumble in critical situations, block better.
Also they are likely looking at the draft, June 1 cuts, next years FA and draft, and the ever-present JPP of TEs.
there's no reason to sign Donnell long-term now. As an ERFA, his option was to take the cheap one-year deal or stop playing football. No reason for the team to shoulder the risk of injury when they can let it rest on the player. If he does well, they can use the RFA tag to get a team-friendly contract with Donnell next offseason.
It's cold, but that's the way the CBA works right now.
We can have another Bennett situation, where we just have a cheap one year rental and then we are looking for a new TE next season....
Donnell was FORCED to sign this deal, or he doesn't play....if the Giants feel this guy can improve, why not sign him instead of forcing him to sign this deal?
So now, Donnell can come into this season, a contract season, and possibly take that next step up, and then hit free agency next year.....once again, like Bennett, they might not be able to afford him.....
did you guys read this part : Terms of the deal are not yet known but Donnell most likely signed his 1-year, $585,000 tender. It says most likely. So lets wait to see what the terms are
RE: I don't understand why there isn't more excitement around this guy
pretty normal for an exclusive rights free agent to merely sign his tender. Next year he will be restricted. It's no big deal. No risk for the Giants. Bigger risk if they sign him to a big deal and he tears his ACL or takes a major step back.
We can have another Bennett situation, where we just have a cheap one year rental and then we are looking for a new TE next season....
The constant negativism from you is one thing but to be this stupid and not understand that they have him as a RFA for the next year making "a cheap one year rental and then we are looking for a new TE next season.... " nearly impossible is another. But looking like a dope doesn't matter to you I guess.
RE: RE: I don't understand why there isn't more excitement around this guy
He took a huge step last year, minus the fumbles of course. But that can be corrected. If he takes another decent step, he's going to be a real threat in this offense.
The one thing, though, that will hold him back is the blocking. I'm not so sure that can be improved to the degree the Giants need in the run game........
While you can make a case for signing him for more than one year at some point, there is no downside to getting his signature on a one-year deal now. The team can offer him an extension at any time - next week, if they like.
Second, the one year deal merely locks him up. how do we know the Giants didn't offer him a longer term contract, and he said no thanks, I'd rather not get locked in at a price below what I think I can get later?
the can rip up the presumed one year contract at any time and replace it with a different contract (if he agrees to it).
there's quite a few receiving tight ends who are not either. Yeah he had some fumbles not securing the ball to his body. But goddammit watch some of the catches he made last year! Very talented agile big target who I'm glad is on this team. Fuck anyone who says he is easily replacable, you're a retard. Link - ( New Window )
Does not mean Larry Donnell believes he is only worth a cheap long term deal. He just had a breakout year outta nowhere. Got all sorts of media attention in the biggest city in Football. I'm sure he believes he's worth top 10 TE money based off potential.
If I'm him I am not signing a deal for 5 years unless it's over 6 mil per. He has rare size an athletism for a TE.
Giants can keep him on the cheap right now.
It's really not that difficult to understand.

How about an adult-level conversation without namecalling?

so you mean not easily replaced like Shockey, Shiancoe, Boss, Pascoe, Ballard, Bennett, and Myers? Just to name all the starting TE that Eli has thrown to.
hurdled over guys to make a few extra yards. Fumbled but it's not something he won't fix. A keeper.
The fumbles usually follow the hurdles. Youe lose control of the body when airborne like that. A guy his size should get his pads low and run over DBs. Fumble problem solved.

largrly disappeared latter end of year when teams game planned and took him away. Cant block and fumbles. Yes he can get better but your comment is pure homerism.
He's shown himself to be a credible receiving option
He's athletic and has good hands. I agree there's no need to lock him up at this point. It's up to him to continue to improve but he's earned some credit.

There is absolutely nothing to see here.
I think part of the issue here for some is that they don't (or didn't) understand the definition of "Exclusive Rights Free Agent". Sometimes I don't understand the differences between ERFA, RFA, UDFA, etc. But I know if I read long enough, someone will spell it out eventually.
a while back? I thought the same thing when you put up the news of the Fenner re-sign - he had signed a while back as well. Were you put in a time machine Eric?

Calling someone "a retard" only illustrates your own stupidity, immaturity, and ignorance of the English language, and renders your opinion invalid.
for the Giants to offer a longer term deal. RFA's are not always cheap. The more another team would want to sign him, the higher the level and more expensive the designation. Was Steve Brown cheap the year of his RFA? No. IF the Giants could get him to sign a low risk, easy to get out of, deal, it is absolutely beneficial for the Giants to do so. the devilish detail is getting LD to sign.
It makes little sense for LD to accept such a deal at this point, because it doesn't give him much more money now (if at all), doesn't give him security, and may potentially cost him money down the road if he pans out and ends up locked into a low rent deal.
But, there is room for a middle ground, where LD gets a little more money, maybe a little bonus, a little more security, but still leaves Giants room to escape if he shits the bed. He might decide that's worth signing a 2 or 3 year deal for.
Obviously much depends on how the Giants view him, and how he views his realistic prospects for the future.

Constant negativism? I suppose I never say anything positive about the Giants?
I will admit that I was wrong....I thought he was an UFA next season, instead of a RFA....but it is still possible, if he has a great year, that he could get an offer that the Giants won't match, and then we are looking again for a TE.....
I have no idea, and neither do you, if the Giants made an offer of a better deal, or if they just forced him to sign this one....If they did, it could have repercussions next year....
I have no idea if he will improve or if he will be a bust....the Giants should know better than moi....we will see....

What does BBI think?
Please stop fumbling, Larry.
I agree, really it seems like he will definitely progress. Running after catch and blocking seemed pretty raw but he clearly has very natural ability.
He isn't a great blocker, doesn't possess great speed, or YAC ability. He's a replaceable body, although you can do worse.
Thanks for listening, Larry.

There is no incentive for the Giants to give him a bigger deal right now.
They can tender him at a high level next year as a RFA.

Didn't Donnell shred the Skins? Maybe I'm thinking of the wrong team.
Giants bring back Donnell - ( New Window )
Only 1 year tells me they may not be as confident in Donnell as some here think. TE may be in play in the draft (and should be).
