The coaches and front office are in win-now mode. They don't have the luxury of waiting a year for him to finish recovering.
Their first round pick has to play and contribute this year and help the team show major improvement. If the team isn't a lot better in 2015, Reese, Ross, Coughlin et al will be gone, and they know it.
In fact, if they draft Gurley, either they think he's going to be ready to play at a high level this season, or that's a pretty strong indication that Reese thinks he's safe and won't be fired if the team is still crummy this year.
But if gurley went on to be a 2-3 time pro bowler I wouldn't have a problem with the pick. I'd still prefer a defensive impact player but we need more production from the running game.
Williams and Jennings better be ready to rumble this season.
As he may be, unless you are a team like a Seattle, who has a great running back, has a great roster, and has the luxury of taking a guy like that and giving him the time to recover, plus they are not picking 9th. Other wise it is very tough to take a guy like that very early. The Giants just added Vereen this off season, they just added Jennings last off season, plus they just added Williams also last off season, I can not see them adding a running back at the top of the draft. Now if he was there for them in the second round then you never know, but no way at 9.
Gurley was clearly the Heisman front runner. With all due respect to Jennings Williams & Vereen, this player is an elite talent that is a game changer, you know, the kind you would never had sniffed at 9 if he didn't get hurt. Jerry Reese, dare to be great?
And yes we need another starting olineman but as good of guy Jennings is and a leader he might be he isn't a rb that a defense will game plan for. I understand its highly doubtful but Gurley would come in and present many more challenges to a defense than any other rb on current roster.
Not a serious injury anymore. If he didn't tear his ACL I don't think we would have a shot at him. Can the Giants justify passing up on a guy who has talent to be the next Adrian Peterson? If him being back by Week 1 is realistic I could see us drafting him & I'd love it.
Wouldn't mind a starting offense of Eli, Gurley, Odell, Cruz, Randle, Donnell, Beatty, Pugh, Richburg, Schwartz, 2nd/3rd round Guard.

Trent Richardson had the talent to be the next Peterson or better according to everyone. And he's been a complete bust.
They have servicable backs right now. This guy would be dynamite. I like as many great players on the Giants as possible. However, doubt it happens. We have to think o-line because that is what Mara said. His words are the best evidence right now.
the best player in this draft. Do you make a huge risk bet on greatness? I don't think Reese has the stones. Can't blame him, Mara said they need another solid draft. He'll play it safe and take Schreff or Cooper or White if they fall.
Last year the Giants went in with David Wilson, Rashad Jennings and still drafted Andre Williams with Michael Cox on roster. If the Giants don't draft Randy Gregory, the top DE imho, they should absolutely get the top offensive talent in this draft. Gurley would fit into the role they envisioned for David Wilson. I rather Gurley than a WR we don't need.
Didn't have the Oline or weapons around him that Richardson had. Teams could stack the box against Gurley. He still was great.
One name doesn't mean shit. Robert Gallery was a bust yet everybody wants an Olineman. Vernon Gholston & Dion Jordan were top 10 & considered busts. People want a pass rusher. Ted Ginn, Heyward-Bey were top 10. Both busts. The same is true for EVERY position.
The reward for Gurley outweighs the risk. The guy has potential to be the best RB in the league. That's how good he is. Not another player in this draft has the potential to be the best player at his position.

Foolish to spend a top 10 pick on a RB anymore.
Don't recall too many people comparing Richardson to Peterson. If healthy. Gurley probably is the best back to come out since Peterson.
How many teams keep there first round picks at any position for 6 years? The Lions just let the #2 overall pick & best player at his position walk. When was the last Giants 1st round pick to get an extension? Kiwi in 2007? No on Aaron Ross, Nicks, Wilson & Kenny Phillips.
Look who the Seahawks & Pats went to the Super Bowl with at WR. Yet we want a WR in Round 1.
You put a star RB on this offense & people are going to think Peyton is in disguise as Eli.
We had a great Oline since Tiki left, but has the guy ever really been replaced? Nope
Gurley had 3900 total yards & 42 TDs in 30 games in the SEC. That is disgusting. There is a reason why a guy who is coming off a torn ACL playing 6 games is being discussed in Round 1.
I'm not rooting to take Gurley, but if he is the pick then I will not be mad. At all
How come the Giants haven't found a good RB since drafting Jacobs in 2005? And Jacobs was more a grinder who ran behind some good olines. Wouldn't call Jacobs a game changing RB.
Rbs are not easily replaceable. This is just another NFL myth. The position has been somewhat devalued because the passing lanes are wide open and more and more teams are employing RB by committee approach.
If gurley is a top flight RB in the NFL you most certainly should draft him. The majority of great Rbs going were all drafted round 3 are better. Usually round 2 or better.

Richardson went 3rd overall, the first non-QB taken that year. Different styles for them but people were absolutely talking about Richardson as a Peterson type talent.
He's not my "first" choice, but there are four true Elite players in this draft.
Cooper
White
Williams
Gurley
If the Giants walked away with any of those guys, no one here better throw the remote. Todd Gurley could easily be the best player to come out of this draft. ACL recovery is not the 50/50 proposition it used to be.
Personally, I'm still in the camp of take one of the two top WRs if they are there, if not take BPA, which could be a an OL.
No one knew he'd suck. That shouldn't preclude a team from drafting a RB high in the draft. Every position busts from time to time -- RB is actually one of the easier positions to draft successfully. Tight ends and wrs seem harder to gauge..
The OL needs addressing and if there's a Collins or Scherff there the Giants are picking one.
McShay is just throwing darts to stay ultra relevant a week before the draft.
Oh! What will he do next?!?!
Fuckin lame.
I understand where you are coming from, but I don't think it is accurate. Most scouts think there is little difference between the 1st round OL talent and the 2nd round OL talent. You can also easily argue the Giants can take either a guard or a tackle to address the OL, so they have plenty of options at 40, or beyond. BBI should not be surprised if the Giants don't select an OL in round 1. Some scouts even think the LT from Florida (Cummings I think? name eludes me) is the best OT in the draft, and virtually no one has him as a top 15 prospect. If you believe you can address your OL and DL needs later, Gurley makes sense. I dare any defense to put 8 in the box against the Giants.

I had the Giants taking Martin that year.

Weird way to go about "win now"

And I really like Gurley - always have. I don't argue that he's not a great talent. But there are other factors at work.
And I think the Giants roll with Williams, Jennings and Vereen.
And I hate Jack Daniels.
