NFT: New York Rangers vs. Pittsburgh Penguins, Game 5, 7pm

arcarsenal : 4/24/2015 8:41 am
Tonight we can punch our ticket to the Conference Semi-Finals in a cool 5 games if we're able to take care of business. I think we've seen about the best we're going to get from the Pens in this series. Between injuries and lack of depth, they're just not very good. Crosby is still good enough to do the damage on his own as he did in Game 2 but fuck that shit.

Major opportunity to get out of a first round in less than 7 games here, which is something we've not done since Renney was behind the bench and we disposed of LOLDevils in 5 back in 2008.

Klein is 50/50 to go tonight per AV. Sounds like it's basically Klein's call at this point.

No bullshit. Start fast, score first and have them with one foot on the golf courses nice and early.

You're really digging in on this
Greg from LI : 4/24/2015 12:02 pm : link
The entire point is that they keep jumping ahead in playoff series and then allow the other team to get back into it. That's all. Quibbling about the exact numbers doesn't change the fact that they haven't won a short series in some time.

Hopefully it'll be 4-2 after tonight. It'd be nice to win in 5 for the first time in seven seasons.

I was only counting games where they were up a game like you said in your post, you should have up at least a game to be a little more clear.

Regardless, they have done better in the last few opportunities when up in a series so hopefully tonight continues that turnaround.
Greg's quote comes from the article below
Wuphat : 4/24/2015 12:06 pm : link
Which is about desperation and closing out series, not winning games in the middle of series.
http://www.blueshirtbanter.com/2015/4/24/8489059/when-you-can-kill-in-the-playoffs-you-have-to-do-it - ( New Window )
Then why is Greg counting games in the middle of series?
YAJ2112 : 4/24/2015 12:12 pm : link
Going back to 2005, the Rangers are 3-4 in games where they have a chance to close out a series before game 7. So I'm sure that 3-12 number isn't talking about those games, it's specifically talking about games where they are up exactly 1 game in the series which tonight's game isn't one of.

Too much fucking bickering today, boys. Leave this nonsense in the regular season. It's playoff time and we need to fuckin' focus.

Either drop the gloves or stop dancing.
Hey, I may very well be wrong about my
Wuphat : 4/24/2015 12:19 pm : link
interpretation, but you're wrong in either case.

If I'm right, you're wrong.

If I'm wrong, you're assertion that the stat can't be right is wrong based on Greg's numbers.

Unless you want to say that (since Greg's numbers actually show a worse case) you were saying it was worse than stated (which you weren't)

Show me where I'm wrong? Greg made it worse when he included a game where they were up 3-1 which is not up 1 game. Those numbers don't include this series, which they are 1-1 in such games making the real numbers 4-13.

And of course that stat is somewhat meaningless since we are up 2 games tonight, not 1.
Lundqvist was 2-8 in playoff OT games

we put it all together the way they're capable of, before moving on to the next round. this Pens team has got to be about ready to quit. Jump on them early and they just might do it.
greg's point is something we all intuitively knew
MetsAreBack : 4/24/2015 2:03 pm : link
With this group we've had a very hard time pulling away in a series. Take out the series against montreal because we faced a backup goalie and its atrocious.

But wednesday night offered some hope - extended a series lead against a starting goalie and won in overtime for once.

And I don't blame Brett for skipping game 2 (though the twat did start the game thread - attention whore) - game 2 with this group is a never ending kick in the nuts. Only game 2 I can remember winning in the last 6-7 years is the game where hank stood on his head in montreal (and we were badly outplayed that night)

Game 2 for rangers fans is like kicking yourself in the nuts over and over.

And to answer the other guy - tampa is not looking back in that series now. Detroit had their shot and they blew it. But they've still got to get through carey price... Will be a tough series
Totally bummed
blueblood'11 : 4/24/2015 2:25 pm : link
Well, not quite. My Nephew gets married tomorrow and the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner is later in the evening so I will not get to watch the game. I'm DVRing it and will watch it when I get home. It will probably be close to its conclusion when I do get home. If you were me how would you handle it.

It's going to drive me crazy wanting to know what's happening. Do I check the score from time to time on my iPhone or wait until I get home whenever that might be and watch it then. Of course will I be able to completely insulate myself that long without someone or something dropping the ball on me in the way of the score.

Who is the "other guy" and what exactly was the question?
I got Greg's point
YAJ2112 : 4/24/2015 2:31 pm : link
I was just pointing out the minor inaccuracy of the number that went with it.
it was to your 10:30am post
MetsAreBack : 4/24/2015 2:43 pm : link
I don't recall specificying that I was responding to a question.

But you do bring up an interesting point about parm - many here still think that meal leads to rangers victories. Yet that guy now plays for tampa. Are parm eaters now closet lightning fans?

Gotta win tonight

I have to work Sunday night and only want to have to DVR the yanks game. :-)
Thanks, MAB.

I had a championship game that we suffered a crushing defeat in. Get off the ice and see the Rangers lost.

Fortunately, tears make great lube.
It really is puzzling how the Rangers can't seem to put teams away in
Sonic Youth : 4/24/2015 2:58 pm : link
4 or 5. It's that kind of fatigue that usually will hurt them if they make a deep run... but that's one of the things that's nice about Hank not playing for 2 months while Cam held the fort down - our most important player is going to be much healthier and rested much more than he usually would be at this point.

I still think that if Michael Sauer doesn't get hurt in 2011, the Rangers might have at least gotten past the Devils that year. Their D looked gassed and Sauer was a solid D-man, from what I recall a 2nd pair guy, who would have allowed Torts to spread out the minutes (plus Torts trusted him, so he'd actually play him).
also stoked to be going to my second playoff game today
Sonic Youth : 4/24/2015 3:02 pm : link
I'm 1-0 so far in playoff games, since I was at game 6 of the ECF last year (2-0 all time... first game was that dope Flyers game in 07 where Todd Feroduk got knocked the fuck out by Colton Orr)..

I can't guarantee anything cause that would be a jinx, but I had chicken parm for lunch and I got my lucky 2012 winter classic snapback on so I'm at least trying to do my part.
....
BrettNYG10 : 4/24/2015 3:03 pm : link
The team hasn't been that much better than its competition historically, which is a huge reason why it hasn't been able to win in five or six.

The team was a shit first seed in 2011-2012 and an underdog many other years.

Killer instinct, etc. are all bullshit IMO. They just haven't been that good of a team.
brett
MetsAreBack : 4/24/2015 3:22 pm : link
If they weren't that good a team then how did they have playoff series leads.... 17!... Times in the last 4 years?

Luck? Maybe but 17 is a pretty decent sample size

Anyway - we haven't played our best postseason hockey yet. Hopefully its coming. I really think we should be scoring 4 a night against this team - I don't care what 'system' they are playing. Our guys should be winning more individual battles.

Let's see a 5-2 ass kicking tonight and look forward to our 6 days off. Nhl doesn't move up series when teams finish early - bruins and habs both waited a week last year. Game 1 seems to be set up for thursday 4/30

MAB,
BrettNYG10 : 4/24/2015 4:46 pm : link
I did a poor job of explaining my point - I meant they haven't been that good relative to competition. A bit of bad luck (Hagelin getting suspended three games when he should have gotten one), is why the record is so poor, but they've largely been competitive series' because the two teams are somewhat evenly matched (in part due to the increased parity amongst playoff teams, which probably peaked this season).

This is the first year in some time I've felt the Rangers should win with some degree of ease. And despite the scores, they've still largely controlled play this series. Pittsburgh has played a bit of Torts hockey - a smart move when you're overmatched. I actually think the Rangers would have greater leads if the Penguins puck-moving dmen were in there - a transition, fast-paced game favors the Rangers.
And didn't the league have a game 1 and game 7 on the same day

As an aside, Brooks is right about the impact of clutching and grabbing. It's really made this series a shitty one to watch.
Agreed Brett
redbeard : 4/24/2015 4:54 pm : link
The skating and transition game we grew accustomed to this season just isn't there. If one didn't have a rooting interest know this series, or two as is some fan's case, it would be a real snoozer

Rangers return to NY coming off two wins in Pittsburgh
baadbill : 4/24/2015 6:56 pm : link
The first being their best overall game of the series and the second an impressive gritty come from behind win in which they shut the Penguins out after going down 1-0 and being totally outplayed in the 1st period. But they dug deep, turned things around in the 2nd, and kept a desperate team at bay. Not necessarily impressive to watch - but impressive as hell when you think about it.

This isn't last year's team or, indeed, similar to any team of this decade. This is a team in transition. Nash and MSL are there to provide some stability - to keep the emotions in check - but the heart of this team is the youth. Not that Nash and MSL won't play a role in the scoring - but the point being this team can win with Nash and MSL playing supporting roles.

Penns will come out fast and hard - but I think this team will show just who they are when they close out this series early - tonight.

LGR!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DO IT!
