How good a quarterback would Jeff Hostetler be if he were coming into the NFL now? It seems that the offenses are designed for quarterbacks with his skill sets.
Hoss was and excellent QB i always liked him better than Simms
but better than Simms? Doubtful. Clearly more athletic and mobile, but didn't see the field as well and wasn't as accurate. Simms had better anticipation- it's one thing to find a guy that's open and throw it to him, it's another to see a guy that's covered and throw it where he'll be open. Simms could do the latter, Hoss not so much.
But yes, Hoss's skillset in today's NFL would be much more appreciated...
One of the most absurd things I've ever read on BBI (and that's saying something).
Who can remember Pat Summerall, along the lines of:
Quote:
... Simms ... with people in his face ... throws ... touchdown ... Lionel Manual
One of my memories of the mid 80s Parcells teams. Run, run then short pass on 3rd down from the Giants 20 until they reached the opponents 30 (field goal range). Simms would then be free to let it loose at least once for a shot in the end zone. Simms was often getting creamed right before he threw. Did he ever get to see one of those TDs?
And he took so many big hits because 1)the Giants didn't have a very good OL for the first part of his career and 2)he hung tough in the pocket to make the throw under heavy pressure.
RE: Simms got hurt so much because he took a ton of big hits

He took a big hit on 4th and 17 in Minny, not sure if people realize that fact.
better. stop hero worshipping. simms had great moments but did not handle the pass rush in his latter years very well. you don't agree fine but the name calling reflects on you
Any QB would be better suited for this NFL including Hoss
Instead of reaching for Dave Brown? Hoss went on to have a pretty good career. I would have liked to have seen him stay with the Giants especially after what happened with Simms shoulder.
... and he was the better QB but... not sure if we beat the Niners and Bills in Championship Game/Super Bowl if Simms plays.
Something about Hostetler's skill set against those two teams made a difference.
The Giants did plan well with Hoss, but I don't buy the argument that they couldn't have beaten the 49ers and Bills with Simms. The regular season games against both teams were neck and neck, and they could have gone either way. It's not like the Giants got killed with Simms under center.
RE: Hoss was and excellent QB i always liked him better than Simms
he was SB 25 MVP, given both his play the last 5 games, 3 of them playoffs, and holding the ball for only a safety and not a possible TD for the Bills.

for a long time, waiting for something to break open. Sometimes to a fault. You'd scream for him to get rid of it, but he'd wait until the last second, make the throw and take the hit to make a play. Did you ever even see him play? Because he was the polar opposite of the way you characterized him.
Nothing can take away from that Super Bowl run and performance, but to put Simms and cower in the same sentence is a disgrace. He defined standing tall in the pocket on bad teams when protecting the QB did not exist. He got pummeled by the "dynasty" Niners and at the whistle wanted to go at it with Ronnie Lott. Cower? No freaking way.
He was versatile and didn't cower like Simms when rushed. He would be a Philly dream right now
Simms was the antithesis of a QB who cowered when facing a pass rush. He was one of the toughest QB's to play the game who consistently stood tall in the face of a pass rush.
What team were you watching?
RE: Someone on BBI had a quote from a Giant from that Era
Big difference between now and then is the salary cap. Giants fans of a certain age remember Simms as a tough as nails champion and as the first heart breaking casualty of the NFL salary cap.
Hoss was good enough to be an NFL starter but he was hardly spectacular.
He couldnt throw the ball anywhere near as well as Simms. Whem Simms went down in 90, the Giants changed their whole gameplan. It became ball control, lots or running, field position, and hope to win in the end. Plus Hoss didnt do too well when he left to be a starter later in his career.

Hoss actually had a few good seasons with the Raiders as a starter. And to be fair since it was before true free agency he was 32 when that happened so his best years were behind him.
why Simms kept gettng hurt. His WR's sucked. Other than Bavaro, he had guys who were at Sinorice Moss level...or worst. Phil had to wait until the last second because his guys could not get open...so he took horrendous hits.
Walsh wanted him in the '79 draft (he was quoted about that). Had Joe Montana gone to the Giants in that draft, and Phil went to the 49'ers, Phil would be in the HOF, and Joe would have been out of the league from injuries in 4 years. That Phil survived with the O-Line we had then, was just amazing.
Oh, and I have a tape somewhere of Phil in the 1986 All Star game; when you saw him with decent WR's, you would have cried...it was easy for him, and that's when players still gave a damn about the All Star game.
i have communicated with through the years. For the record I loved Phil I just preferred Jeff's style of play better, i never ever said he was better than Phil.
For the cower comment mea culpa I should have put it in context. late in Phil's career no one remembers screaming at the set PHILLLL!! Phil took plenty of hits for the team and is a Giant Legend, did he have great moments without question was he a great QB that will always be up for debate especially if you like to hear adjectives like mentioned above thrown at you. Thanks to CIP for taking a different slant on things
Holy shit

Honestly, WTF?
Christ.
They both saved their best for the glory of a Super Bowl.
Those Dave Brown / Kent Graham days were rough.

You can't fix stupid.
Why do you hate on fucktards?
With 2 drops.
Obviously on drugs during the Simms years... LOL

in fucktardism. Another vote for the rating system.

Because Fucktards are the Pond Scum floating on top of the gene pool.

Doug Riesenberg said that.
What a stupid thing to say. Simms was more than just a cower.

Simms cowered? Holy Shit you're an idiot. Don't ever post again. You will forever be known as a dumbfuck for this post.
