NFT: Islanders - Capitals Playoff Game 6, 3pm Game Thread

pganut : 4/25/2015 8:17 am
It's down to a one game series for the Islanders, do or die today. The right outcome gets them to another one game series, but that isn't anything to think about today. These 60 minutes are the only thing on the Islanders' minds. Backs to the wall. Are we used to any other way?

They're saying the right things:
Quote:
“At some point it was going to come to this, right?” Head Coach Jack Capuano said. “We have a chance in our building to take it to a Game 7. Our backs were up against the wall a lot this year. We’ve responded really well and I think we’ll do the same.”
Hickey:
Quote:
“We know what it means to our fans. That can’t be the last game there, it can’t be the last game for them. We’re going to come with our heads on and be ready to play and make sure that it’s not the last game there. We have to find a way.”
Kyle Okposo:
Quote:
We need to keep our emotions in check and make sure that we are focusing on the right things,” Okposo said. “We’re a little bit banged up, but it gives other guys an opportunity to step up. You’re going to have to deal with injuries as a team and we have to find a way to put together a full team and get a big win.”
John Tavares:
Quote:
“We’ve had injuries during the year,” Tavares said. “We’ve found a way to win hockey games and play well. At this time of year it gets heightened and we’re missing some defensive guys, some big presence, but we just have to be better. Individually we still believe in our group. We’ve responded to adversity well, we’ve overcome a lot this year and it’s another chance for that if we want to keep playing.”

Another ally should be the raucous home crowd, who surely are not ready for this to potentially be NVMC's swan song. Cappy also knows this:
Quote:
“There’s going to be a lot of emotion in the building,” Capuano said. “The fans have been great. We work as a unit of one here. We’ve built a lot of energy off them.”

I'm not ready for this to be over and I know you're not, either. We work as a unit of one...despite the challenges we know - will we field the best combo of forwards? The reality of having 3 d-men in there that in a perfect world would not be on the ice? - this game presents the chance to even things up with an all-out assault. Let's be good fans. Let's all row in the same direction here. Let's give the boys our support. Let's all be Islanders today.

Let's Go Islanders!

They'd owed a lot of heart today
Mike from Ohio : 4/25/2015 6:38 pm : link
Coming off a bad game, with guys missing, and being consistently down a guy while getting cheap-shot, they manage a win. Impressive resiliency.

Time to close this one out Monday. As someone said above it feel like the caps threw everything they had at us, and we weathered it. Now we go into their building with a chance to put the stake in their heart.

Do it early and do it convincingly! LGI!

Too keyed up from the intensity.
Congrats

One more to go, please end the Caps season, want to hear DC fines whine about being losers.

Refuting sucked, I don't know how Chimera isn't called for interference or no boarding on Tavares by the Caps.
Dirty, goon team.

An NY series would be a huge boon to hockey locally.

Hopefully the guys can give us a few more. They showed a lot of guts and heart.

With that said, the Caps are an absolutely vile and disgusting group. I really want to see Martin ram Ovechkin through the boards twice.

Since Dale Hunter, this organization has deserved every agonizing playoff loss. It would be amazing if the Isles can give them one more day of misery.

Let's bring the ghosts of Pat LaFontaine with us into game seven.
How about drafing Matt Martin

Dirty, cheap, clean. I don't really care. Someone needs to get whacked from Washington.
I'll take a page from the last Rangers game thread
pganut : 4/25/2015 7:58 pm : link
A good day when Harvey is a boss, leading the Mets to a resounding win, and the other blue and orange guys played a great game as well. This'll get me through the rest of the weekend.

And Dave, the Balvenie Caribbean Cask is flowing well here also!

Still have some business to take care of, but a shout out to Boychuk and Leddy, who played 29 and 28 minutes respectively today. Huge. My two fearless predictions for the next 24 months: Strome will be an all-star, and Leddy will win a Norris. He has shined brightly since getting top pair minutes here on LI.
Mayfield and Donno were impressive
Dave M : 4/25/2015 8:21 pm : link
The one time Donno got caught up was really in JT. Oh I forgot about Donovan being a goon when he got slashed by 3 caps and said something mean so he got a misconduct. Joking aside, Mayfield should be in regardless of de Haan's condition.

I'm still pumped. Even at dinner just a shit eating grin on my face.
Donovan, after the game:
pganut : 4/25/2015 8:42 pm : link
Quote:
Donovan on why he got the misconduct: "I literally have no clue." Never said a word to O'Rourke (referee).

Cappy:
Quote:
“I thought we played a complete game,” Head Coach Jack Capuano said. “All four lines contributed. I thought [Matt] Donovan and [Scott] Mayfield played a tremendous game and your best players have to be your best players. It starts in goal and I thought Jaro made some big saves for us.”

Mayfield:
Quote:
“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t [nervous],” Mayfield said. “It was pretty special, just seeing the atmosphere and being thrown right into it. This was probably the best game I've ever played in."

Kulemin:
Quote:
"Everybody worked as a team today. It wasn't one guy or two guys, it was everybody."

great game to be at.

Would need to see the replay to see how suspect some of those calls were. Either way credit to the team for stepping up against all odds and outplaying the Caps.

Bring on 7
are we just looking thru islanders glasses
theold5j : 4/25/2015 9:24 pm : link
thinking all these hits are cheap shots. I mean how is the ovechkin hit today not even a penalty. Wouldn't have mattered anyway woth the goal but how is that Not even called. We had gotten some breaks from the refs too, but I don't think we have been pushing the envelope lIke the caps have been.
Thought Donovan and Mayfield were great.
timintey : 4/25/2015 9:27 pm : link
If true that Donovan didn't say anything to the ref then Bettman really needs to step in regarding these refs. That's ridiculous.

I can see Lee back in for Cmac. Maybe this woke him up.

Let's ride this wave...
Not sure how that hit
giantgiantfan : 4/25/2015 10:16 pm : link
on Tavares wasn't boarding. He was clearly defenseless and thrown into the boards.
Hate that we have fans like this
timintey : 4/25/2015 10:27 pm : link
More shit being thrown...One of the main reasons I left NY was to get away from people like this (not the folks on this board)

That said, read the comments. There is concern that Niskanen could face discipline for throwing a bottle back in the stands...

Rewatched the game this morning
pganut : 4/26/2015 10:37 am : link
On the Isles 2nd goal...the Caps' own stupidity was to blame. Alzner had already cut off JT after his initial attempt was denied by Holtby. Ovechkin comes in like a missile to deliver one of his patented hits from behind when the opponent isn't watching (which should have been boarding...he came in with both hands above JT's numbers and below the nameplate and drove him into the boards headfirst), and he and Alzner paused a second to admire the carnage which took them out of the play. Then, neither Chimera or Kuznetsov took the man cutting to the net (Kulemin) as Chimera was skating a lazy circle and Kuznetsov decided to take the trailing player.

Undisciplined play by the cheapshotting Caps, and it cost them. Looking for more of the same tomorrow.
I noticed

Used his stick to toss a beer bottle that was thrown at him back into the crowd. There is video of it from fans there, should that be looked at for suspension?

I would love for those caps fans to show where we did anything equal to brouwers hit on de haan in this series? Waaa the isles have a 4th line that hits everyone in site cleanly. Boo fucking hoo. No islander has delivered a concussion on a questionable hit or seperated a guys shoulder on a late hit. I question caps fans knowledge of what they are watching. Also they chanted we are louder? The only time they get loud is when their team scores. Otherwise playing at that place is like studying in a library.
You guys think we can force game 8 on home ice?

JT knew he was getting crushed and sent the puck to the corner instead of bracing for the hit. Stupid Ovi was looking for the puck meanwhile Leddy had it. Love that play.

Luckily for JT, he said he saw Ovi at the last second and was able to prepare for the hit. Had to collect himself for a moment but said he was ok. If he didn't see the blur at the last second, I think it would have been bad.

I don't mind heavy hits, but the Caps seem to be targeting rather than letting the course of play dictate the hits. Viz, CDH, Grabbo and JT have all been clearly targeted.

But I did love Boychuk's bodyslam on Ward. Beautiful.
My seats were right in front of the Ovi hit
Mike in Long Beach : 4/26/2015 1:21 pm : link
Honestly, I didn't have an issue you with it. Yes it was a hit from behind, but it wasn't dirty to me. Ovi just seemed to be trying to knock JT off the puck. He's a physical player and we have plenty of those on our team.

If anything, the way it unfolded may workout being good for us. That was a very cut and dry example of their physical play negatively impacting their ability to win. Everyone focused on bashing us and no one picked up Kulemin. If we can get an early goal tomorrow, Washington might be reevaluating their strategy mid-game, which usually a good thing for the opposition.

Kulemin and Grabbo are awesome, period. Give me a team full of Cool Lemons and the work ethic he has and we'd never lose. And you can see what Grabbo brings to the lineup...looking forward to a full season of his (relative) health and seeing what that means to this team.

I've been smiling at a daydream I've been replaying in my head over and over that a) the Islanders come out and execute their gameplan with precision and b) the pressure of game 7 has the Caps lay a huge egg. I'm looking forward to this tomorrow. We have the momentum.

Completely agree. Huge momentum shift... Go in with the same game plan, everyone does their job, we win... Isles have been the better team for the better part of this series...

I feel like they're going to break thru on the PP early tomorrow night and win 3-2.

pressure totally on washington. as said above. We have been the better team thus Far. I love the attitude that tavares has. You can hear it in his interviews. And love his emotion after the game yesterday. He's fired up.

Your goal scorers tomorrow night. Tavares, okposo, leddy

And a big kudos to garth for the Clutterbuck for Nino trade. Cal might not be the best skill guy for an 80 game season And his act might be a bit tiring. But in a short series he really turns it on. And good teams need players like him

it couldn't be done, but I managed to attend my fiance's father's 65th birthday surprise party all-day saturday, and take a 6 hour car ride home, and still manage to watch my DVR of the game on Sunday evening without knowing the score.

I thought our young D guys held their own and Boychuk/Leddy are keeping us in this. Tavares is great, the refs are brutal, really glad to have Grabovski back, our 4th line really brought us momentum and will need to do so again tonight.

Please stay out of the box tonight and please don't let up if we score a few early ones.

I saw virtually none. I tailgated with my friend and his Dad. There was a group of maybe 15 caps fans two spots over from us.

One passerby had some really funny trash talk for them. Walked by and was like "Good luck today guys! Let's have some fun out there! We don't want you to start blogging again. May the best team win! Have a safe trip back to DC after." They took it in stride.

After that I think I saw 1 Caps jersey the rest of the game.
