Good piece on Ali Marpet

Milton : 8:24 am
It's from an Eagles website and includes two video interviews with him. In both interviews he compares himself to Justin Pugh. But it gives me this creepy feeling that just as Pugh was an Eagles fan who landed with the Giants, Marpet may turn out to be a Giants fan who lands with the Eagles (with their 2nd round pick).

An Olineman

Especially a Guard to the Eagles seems very unlikely. They really don't have a need for one unless Evan Mathis is traded or released. Which at this point Idk if it will happen.

They have much bigger needs at CB, Safety, WR & pass rusher. Not saying it's impossible, but I think if they draft an Olineman that high it will be a Tackle.

Truthfully I don't even think they end up with a 2nd round pick. I think they trade the farm to the Titans for Mariota. I'm thinking Bradford, a 1st & 2nd in 2015 & 2016 plus Kendricks or Fletcher Cox. Hopefully for us it is Fletcher Cox.
I would absolutely

love getting Marpet in this draft, but odds are against that since I think we'll go oline in either round 1 or 2 and don't see the Giants drafting another lineman until later in the draft. Marpet will go probably early 3rd round IMO. It's ashame because this kid looks special and could be the next Larry Allen.

That's my thinking, too, which is a shame because he wouldn't be a reach with the 74th pick.
I think if the Giants go with an OT like Peat....
Milton : 11:29 am : link
...in round one, it increases the chances of going with an OG like Marpet in round three, because Peat is strictly an outside guy.
I've seen a lot of people
In the know with the Fins that don't think Marpet gets past them in the 2nd round. If we like the guy we have to take him at 40 IMO.
I'm pulling

for him. He's a really nice kid.
One thing I love about this board is

Seems like half the forum thinks 9 is too high a slot for big school studs like Scherff or Flowers or Peat, while the other half can't eait to grab Marpet, an OG from Hobart, at 40!

The next Larry Allen?
Next Larry Allen?

More like the next Chris Snee. Similar type physique, demeanor, and attitude. Even looks similar to him.

Not Allen and not Snee. Snee probably played at 320 or more as the years went on, and was perhaps the strongest lineman we've ever had at RG. Marpet is a LG imo. Mobile, strong, but not a physically dominant specimen, and as (I think) Milton has said, a guy from Hobart who has a lot to prove.

Only reason I compared him to Larry Allen was because he too came from a small school and excelled in the NFL.

Agree that Ali Marpet has a very long way to go to become the next Snee let alone Larry Allen but if you compare the size strength measurables, they are surprisingly pretty close coming out of college. Snee is a little heavier but Marpet is a little quicker, more athletic. Obviously Snee played a much higher level of competition and had a more polished game coming out. Now where I think they are really similar is in their personalities and passion for the game and for the Giants. I could see Marpet becoming a Coughlin guy very quickly. Everything I've seen on him suggests he's a very intelligent humble guy with the drive and the will to succeed. Everyone who followed Snee knows of his legendary work ethic and drive. He certainly did not become one of the strongest and most dominant interior linemen in the NFL through talent alone.
Huge, I like Marpet, but see him as a different guy than Snee.

I'd be happy if we took him in the 3rd.

Just wish he played for a major school one year at least. Why stay at Hobart with his talent?
This is a fun story but let's face it. He's gonna see a lot of shit
BeerFridge : 4/27/2015 8:29 am : link
in the NFL from DL that he didn't see in Hobart. He's gonna have to grow a bit to be a contributor.
I get the same worried feeling...
Dan in the Springs : 4/27/2015 10:03 am : link
thinking about relying on him as I do the center we just signed from the CFL - Jones, iirc? This is the kind of guy to get when you have the time to develop someone, when your starters for the season are already clearly identified.

It will say a lot to me if the first OL taken by the Giants is Marpet. Not so much about Ali, but more about how they must feel about John Jerry's play and Schwartz's health.
