NFT: Obtaining a Visa for Brazil

Anando : 4/25/2015 2:13 pm
Hey folks,

Does anyone have experience getting a Visa for Brazil - specifically from the NYC consulate?

I'm planning on traveling to Brazil with friends on May 17th.

However, it seems that the consulate is backed up and I can only get an appointment on the 5th. Reviews are mixed - some have said that they got a visa within a few days (once they showed that their trip was coming up) and others said that they got screwed.

I've been in touch with a few visa expediting companies, but most of them can't guarantee anything...

Would appreciate anyone's thoughts / suggestions.

For the record I've gotten Brazil visa before (in 2002).
Thanks!
they are a royal pain in the ass

they make you wait longer if you use an agency than if you go in yourself to the consulate. So I recommend the latter.

Once you get the appointment and submit all the required documents - it takes about 10 business days (for an agency, they make you wait 21 business days).

May 17 is cutting it tight, which in the 21st Century baffles my fucking mind. About as arrogant a country as you will come across (no offense to Brazilian BBI members - I am just speaking of your government)

NYC does not accept walk-ins during certain hours in the morning? The Miami consulate does - between 10am-12pm every day. Get in as soon as you can.
Thanks Mets

Are you sure about the agency thing?

They said they can get me an appointment this upcoming week, versus the first appointment for me being 5/6...

I'm just confused as to which direction to go in.
you can use an intermediary like travel document systems

to expedite and remove some of the hassle. You'll pay for it but it may be worth it in this case.
Walking it in....

is the quickest way to get it done. It shouldn't take more than 5 business days.
In Brazil's case

they take longer with agencies than if you personally go in to the consulate and deal with them yourself. I have no idea why.

Every consulate is probably a little bit different - in Miami, which is where I live and have used it twice now (my passport was stolen 18 months ago) - it takes 21 business days via agency (and my company has very good agencies, but they cant get around this one - I got a China and an Indian visa, in contrast, in under a week each) ... and 10-15 business days if you go to the consulate.

I have a friend of a friend who used the one in Chicago - he got his back in 10 business days too.
As I type this from India

For China and India (recently) only, you can apply and get a 30 day tourist visa (with 2 business meetings only) in 3 days. Mine was 24 hours. The actual visa is obtained in the country you are visiting, thus the 2 day turn (send .jpg of your passport).

This is a fairly recent passport proceeding and currently is only for China and India, but is gaining popularity for other countries as well. There are restrictions on the business end of this.

Othertwise, depending on the level of service, the quickest way to get a visa was going to be 2 weeks. This was directly through Cox&something service which promises 10 working days (with 1 day of UPS delivery.

The normal CIBT services promise 3 weeks for any country.
You will sit in a giant holding pen

and have no visibility about when your number will be called. None.

Still worth it, though. Brazil is awesome.
