If we wait till the 4th round to get an offensive lineman I'll be

furious, and if we wait until the 5th to land a S I'll be equally disgusted.

I would not be. As long as that 4th and 5th rounder can contribute
Yup, like Mosley, Brewer, McCants and the other stiffs we've
yatqb : 4/26/2015 12:06 pm : link
had so much luck with in the mid to late rounds.
You writing off Mosley?
Headhunter : 4/26/2015 12:19 pm : link
Interesting
So why don't u trade them away for Reese
est1986 : 4/26/2015 12:24 pm : link
Since the picks are a waste of time

HH, I can't figure him out. The few times he got in (for a few plays before injuries, so we didn't see much of him) he looked good. But the fact that they played Brewer over him at times at OG certainly gives me pause.

But we can leave Mosley out of the comment I made and still make our point. We can add guys like Eric Herman and Mitch Petrus instead...and yeah, I've given up on Herman.
Only if we can draft a David Diehl
est1986 : 4/26/2015 12:28 pm : link
All over again... With that FIFTH ROUND PICK. Or a Gibril Wilson... WITH THAT FiFTH ROUND PICK
That's all
est1986 : 4/26/2015 12:29 pm : link
I meant..

There's a difference between targeting players at positions of need early and THEN taking flyers on players late in the draft who you hope can make it, vs. hoping (and almost by default counting on) guys you draft in the mid to late rounds to come in and start for the team. I value mid round picks, and the more the better. But I don't count on them to produce quickly.

I'd actually prefer to trade down unless a blue chipper is there for us at 9, because more picks offer more chances to strike gold, but even if we were able to do so I'd hope that we target OL, DL and S early in the draft.
I'm confused about his status
Headhunter : 4/26/2015 12:33 pm : link
he was penciled in to start in training camp, got hurt, came back, disappeared

Exactly my point; I was puzzled at that, and could only infer that the Giants didn't feel he could play.

I was really high on that pick, as he killed the Combine and seemed to have the ability and desire to become a good starting OG. But then he vanished.
I'd only trade down for an extra first rounder
est1986 : 4/26/2015 12:39 pm : link
I'd be fine with a trade down for a first and a second rounder only if that first round pick is before Philly picks at 20. But I think the Giants will get a player in there Top 5 overall. So they should stick to it.

And you say you can't play your hand expecting a 4th or 5th rounder to be a starter but truthfully you can't depend on any pick other then a top 10 pick to come in and make an immediate impact. Diehl by no means got it all done I hear one but when he hung it up he had a solid career here and helped us win two of'em so yeah
est, sure there are players who become major contributors
yatqb : 4/26/2015 12:47 pm : link
after being mid-round picks. But you don't want to count on that. We NEED at least one more starting OL, and likely need a FS as well. Given the Giants' history n the draft over the last 10 years, I'm pretty confident that we'll land a player in round 1 who will contribute quickly, even if the guy has flaws (which most rookies do). I'm less confident about guys who are picked later on, as we all should be. It's just logical; 32 teams have passed on the guy through a number of rounds; sometimes they are all wrong, but more often than not the teams are correct. As Reese has said, you should get a better player at 9 then at 32. And certainly we can extend that to pick 142 or whatever.

Now what if we pick a good in rd1
est1986 : 4/26/2015 12:50 pm : link
That contributes right away but is not a FS or OL
Will it still
est1986 : 4/26/2015 12:52 pm : link
Infuriate you bkuz it's neither position of need?
That's fine with me, but I'd hope they target those positions,
yatqb : 4/26/2015 12:55 pm : link
particularly the OL, in one of the next two rounds. Lots of good OGs and a few RTs may be there at 40, as might Damarious Randall.
DT in the 1st, LB in the 2nd?
Klaatu : 4/26/2015 12:59 pm : link
Doesn't sound like the Giants.
I don't see NYG picking Shelton at 9
Watson : 4/26/2015 2:10 pm : link
This is not intended to be a knock on Shelton. Rather, defense tackles are just generally not selected in the top 10. Since the 2005 draft, there have only been 5. The last time was 2005 with Suh and McCoy. Shelton is not one of them.
Any oline guys entering their 3rd year
mrvax : 4/26/2015 3:09 pm : link
and they haven't broken the starting lineup or proven to be effective but have a guy ahead of them, should be dumped.

You can say that about most young players. You should not waste precious roster spots on players not shaping up to become starters.

Give them one, two and the 3rd is determined in camp. If the guy is always injured or just doesn't have it by his 3rd camp (whatever reason) cut the bastid unless he's good but can't bump the starter.

That way, every year you have a much better shot at finding guys that can play later in the draft or UDFAs.
