Graziano's take......I like these couple of sentences

GiantBlue : 5/1/2015 8:17 am
on Reese & Coughlin

The popular narrative around the Giants this offseason has been that this is a "win or else" year coming up, and that the jobs of general manager Jerry Reese and coach Tom Coughlin, among others, are on the line if they don't make the playoffs.

That may or may not be true, but the more relevant fact of the matter is that Reese and Coughlin don't care. Or at least they don't care as much about that as they do about helping make the Giants better. Reese and Coughlin aren't the sort of men who manage out of fear for their jobs. They have a combined 35 years of service to the Giants' organization, and they're invested in its long-range success. That's the way confident and competent professionals look at things. They act out of a sense of responsibility, not self-preservation.

So on Thursday night, they took the player they liked the best -- a player my sources tell me they would have taken even if Brandon Scherff, Kevin White, Dante Fowler and Beasley had still been on the board. This isn't just spin. The Giants really, really like Ereck Flowers.

Wow,

Graziano said this? THAT Graziano?
Interesting

Flowers was the target over all the others

Scherff was #1 with Flowers a close 2nd.

That they had the pick in almost immediately shows they knew who they wanted.
Good find -

So Graziano thinks they like Flowers better than Scherff. They think Flowers has the upside to be a starting left tackle. Personally, I don't think Scherff will be a very good lt. But that's just me.
Their pick

was in fast, I figured they most have liked that kid.

see Scherff as a guard, period.

The issue with Flowers is technique and, to some extent, maturity. Hope Flaherty can help with the former and age and the Giants culture (including someone taking him under his wing - Beatty? Schwartz?) will take care of the latter.
Based the tenor of Coughlins post pick interview
Coach Mason : 5/1/2015 8:30 am : link
And how he spoke about Scherff then the no comment stuff about trading up or down ....I dont believe that's entirely true. I think they wanted Scherff first. I also believe they would have taken Williams over Flowers too.

This isn't to say they aren't really high on Flowers but it isn't to the extent that Graziano is claiming (probably was fed the customary sugar coated ,inflate the guy you pick speech from the FO)

Jay, agree with technique issues. All reports say he has no issues - gym rat, hangs with his Dad, not a partier, focused on football. I don't think he has maturity issues besides being 21.

I saw Coughlin immediately after the pick. He was was pretty happy and didn't look to be the least bit disappointed. He called him an aircraft carrier, nasty attitude, finishes his blocks. TC has been around too long to know that everything out of his mouth can be twisted to find some hidden meaning. Sometimes, no comment, means no comment
I would be even happier if the Giants really wanted Flowers all along
jcn56 : 5/1/2015 8:38 am : link
because then all the pre-draft chatter about Scherff would have been smoke. I really didn't like the amount of noise coming up about that pick - if they really did want Scherff, broadcasting it to the world before the draft doesn't help their cause any.
I don't claim to know what was in their heads but
nicky43 : 5/1/2015 8:41 am : link
I do think Flowers has the attitude, work ethic, and moral character to appear more attractive than the other guys. The Giants put a lot of value on those player attributes. And with all the health problems the Giants have been enduring I suspect the younger age added a little value as well. Then you can add values like Battleship, Air Craft Carrier, Nasty, strongest at the combine, and he's big...huge...GIAGANTIC!

I think the Giants wanted Scherff first
eclipz928 : 5/1/2015 8:45 am : link
but expected going into the draft that he would be gone before their pick. I still get the sense that they were very high on Flowers at that spot regardless of how things played out.
Well, the upside is clearly there
Emil : 5/1/2015 8:53 am : link
Flowers could be a dominant force on the right side for 10 years. Washington is happy they got Scherrf, but you could argue Scherrf doesn't have near as much potential as Flowers.
I think they like Flowers a lot
nyynyg : 5/1/2015 9:03 am : link
But I call total BS that they could not have Fowler ranked higher. Scherff I could agree because I could see how they may have graded the OL differently.

HH, not saying he wasn't happy. Just saying that he wasn't the #1 OL on the board. We also had Watkins and likely evans rated higher than OBJ last year but that turned out pretty well...

Fowler went 3rd. He was not on the board when the Giants picked.
JR said Flowers was the highest ranked player at the time of he pick...

"At the end of the day" we got a hard working, dedicated to his craft, talented, very young, very aggressive need position who arguably was ( depending on who you like as a talent evaluator) the BPA.

they picked with 5 minutes left on the clock.they were on the clock for 4.5 minutes before the redskins pick was announced. they used half their alloted time. It wasn't 30 seconds, it was 30 seconds after the redskins pick was announced.

One asshat told Eric the Scherff talk was all smoke...

Other beat writers had Flowers pegged early on.

It makes alot of sense when you think about.
I also thought that a lot of the Scherff talk -
Ira : 5/1/2015 10:02 am : link
especially from Snee - was smoke. Jerry's been pretty good at keeping his intentions hidden.
I think TC's
rocco8112 : 5/1/2015 11:09 am : link
comments about Scherff are getting blown out of proportion. Also, unless it was some kind of Freudian slip, why would he want to cryptically communicate that Schreff was rated higher?

This would seem to serve no purpose, except to insult Flowers, and would not be TC's style.

I do not think it is hard to beleive that they were happy to come away with Flowers. Is it such a stretch to think he was their guy all along? As a fan you have to be happy the Giants drafted a o line prospect with a high ceiling. When This team needs linemen.

You realize the pick is in a good 3 or 4 minutes before they announce it correct?

If you were watching it you could see the pick is in come up on the ticker no longer than a minute after being on the clock
nvm i read what you said wrong

I would add one thing to this line of thinking
steve in ky : 5/1/2015 11:22 am : link
They are also confident enough in their abilities that they don't foresee the team not making the playoffs this season to where they won't be here past this season. That way of thinking is just impossible for certain people who are good at what they do.

Don't remember where
Thegratefulhead : 5/1/2015 11:25 am : link
I had read that there was division...Scouting and Reese preferred Flowers because of upside and LT potential, You only take an OL at 9 if he can play LT Coaching staff including Coughlin preferred Scherff because he was more ready. They really liked both though. I was slightly on Scherff side but I think Washington did us a favor, his age is huge plus, I think he is going to be Studd LT after playing 2 years at RT.
Flowers over Dante Fowler
ghost718 : 5/1/2015 11:36 am : link
That Giants draft board must be a fun read.
I believe they liked him better than Scherf
David B. : 5/1/2015 12:13 pm : link
For the reasons stated -- higher ceiling/OLT. Sorry, I don't believe that they would have taken him if Fowler, Williams, Cooper, or White was still on the board.

There were plenty of rumors/leaks that they really liked Flowers. Last time there were this many that turned out to be true were with Ron Dayne. Obviously, let's hope this turns out better.
I have no problem with the pick under any circumstances.
Matt M. : 5/1/2015 12:17 pm : link
But, I feel even better hearing this is the guy they had targeted, even if a few of the other names were available.

You are mistaken sir. They were on the clock approximately 5 minutes, I watched it.I watched the clock as the pick was made. % minutes. go check you are wrong.Which is why you dont hear anyone outside the forum commenting on how the Giants " Ran to the podium" other than some schmuck times reporter.Have eric or anyone who has a clue inquire as to how long they were on the clock.

The only reason you THINK they took 30 seconds, is because there pick was in about 30 seconds after the redskins pick was ANNOUNCED, not in. the draft clock starts when then previous team makes its pick, not when they announce it.ESPNs clock for the Giants only showed up when they were already 4 minutes into their pick, as shown by their clock. it was up about a minute when they actually picked and the clock stopped, at around the 5 minute mark.

Giants made their pick 30 seconds after the redskins pick was announced .They had already been on the clock 5 minutes.
Giants took 5 minutes to make their pick.Look it up.Or ask someone who actually knows.
