but I agree. Especially at MLB and WILL. Need a dude that can really run and cover at that weakside spot. I know we signed some free agents, but come on...
This is my one big knock on our front office. I just hate that we ignore this position year in and year out. Athletic LBs have become even more important in an age of pass-happiness; you need them to cover backs and TEs, but also stand in against the run. I hate having to hit the scrap heap every year to find diamonds in rough, and using coming up empty.
I liked Stephone Anthony, Erik Kendricks, and Denzel Perryman going into this year's draft, and the latter two were available in the 2nd. I'm not knocking the Collins pick - that was a big get, in my opinion - but it bugged me that we didn't have the patience to wait in the 2nd, knowing we could land an excellent LB if Collins didn't make it to us at 40. Giving up #108 hurt, too, as we missed a chance on good players there. We won't even talk about our 5th round pick.
I have zero confidence that Jon Beason can stay healthy for 10 games, let alone 16. A MIKE was, to me, a priority in this off-season, and it hasn't happened yet.
Sigh.
Modern 4-3 is built around pass rush and athletic, multiple secondary
I care how good he is. Kennard appears to be very very good; so what if he wasn't drafted high? On the other hand, Sintim was drafted high and never did a thing.
The Giants added linebackers in free agency and have Beason and McClain coming back. LB wasn't a big need for the Giants or a big strength of this draft.
Tho he isn't the big physical type we went after. For WLB I thought a great choice - covers, tackles, sacks, picks even if he's small
That said I'm a fan of Collins. If he isn't just a box safety (depends on who you ask) or develops in coverage he'll be awesome. Seems a rangy enforcer type to me
2. Mike Rivers
3. Jon Beason
And a lot of scouts don't even consider him a LBer.
Beason and McClain are old.

I thought they were targeting McClain in 2010, but he was picked before the Giants had a chance.
Put it this way. They drafted Kiwi and made him play LB.
His Mom was probably frightened by a LB before he was born.
When he becomes the NFL Commissioner the position will be eliminated.

Old School Giants Defense
Despite the fact that LB's are still more important then DB's.
As for who was an option, that's easy.
Perryman. He actually has the instincts and ability needed to play.
