Connor Orr: Giants were thinking about Lael Collins

mofti : 5/2/2015 7:33 pm
According to Connor Orr of NFL.com, the Giants were among the teams “thinking” about Collins during the draft, but scouting director Marc Ross says New York wasn’t going to take that type of risk.

Article also mentions we expects to sign soon

There is no risk involved now... worst comes to worst you cut him.
absolutely
bc4life : 5/2/2015 7:39 pm : link
sign him, nothing to lose.
I'm sure
MookGiants : 5/2/2015 7:40 pm : link
a lot of teams will be trying to sign him as an UDFA. Maybe our offensive line situation will help
Is he THE prime suspect
SanFranNowNCGiantsFan : 5/2/2015 7:41 pm : link
...?
what's up with whoever did it?
bc4life : 5/2/2015 7:42 pm : link
your shooting a pregnant woman - wtf, wtmf?

bc4life : 5/2/2015 7:43 pm : link
No, based on what I have seen - was someone she knew, may have had to do with her not letting someone use her car.
I think most teams felt the same way

Nothing earth shattering
There's still some opportunity cost
81_Great_Dane : 5/2/2015 7:45 pm : link
should he turn out to be in big legal trouble, because there is a roster limit. You can only have so many guys under contract. If you sign La'el Collins and have to cut him a week or two or three later, some of the better UDFAs you may have wanted are already gone and with other teams.

If Collins is innocent of all involvement, he's been well and truly screwed by all of this.
If he is 100%
Mr. Nickels : 5/2/2015 7:46 pm : link
cleared I really hope Beckham can convince him to come here but maybe the New York media is a hinderence?

Imagine coming out of the draft with 4 1st round talents? Would make up for losing the 4th.
What's the risk?
Jerz44 : 5/2/2015 7:52 pm : link
It seems that he's not really the prime suspect, just someone they're talking to.

I don't know anything about the 6/7 round picks- maybe they're all stars. But more likely theyre off the team in 4 years. I'd rather have La'el and a potential 1st round talent than those guys.
I'm thinking he will wait until clreaded before signing w/ a team
steve in ky : 5/2/2015 7:56 pm : link
Then he sits back as a free agent and let the bidding begin
cleared

I think he still has to go by the rookie pay scale for UDFA. The "bidding" can only go so far.

Even if undrafted? I didn't think of that but I guess you are correct.
no
blue42 : 5/2/2015 8:00 pm : link
way to know if he's the prime suspect...or not.
Of course if cleared a team may pay first round money if they choose
steve in ky : 5/2/2015 8:01 pm : link
NO?
This never made much sense.
LauderdaleMatty : 5/2/2015 8:12 pm : link
With all of his draft prep I can't imagine he was even around. But it's seemingly costing this kid millions. He's a first or second round talent. The Giants should be all over this kid.
Speed bump
Fish : 5/2/2015 8:16 pm : link
in this kids life. He chooses a team, plays well for a few years....an he will get his money. If innocent then he should have a chip on his shoulder and be great.
With the Domestic Abuse problems this past season, I'm sure all the

Front Offices are well aware of the statistics.

1/3 of Female homicide victims - killer was an intimate partner.

If the weapon was a gun or the women was pregnant the % goes up.

The leading cause of death for pregnant women is murder.

Truly feel bad for Collins if he wasn't involved. But teams would be taking a risk by signing him before he is cleared.
I just saying Mr. Monk would have cleared him in time for the draft

No. there are rules against it. UDFA's have a slot too.

Other than rookie caps I thought slots were more protocol and not a rule.

"The leading cause of death for pregnant women is murder."

Are you shittin' me? That so fukn sad, I don't even know where to begin...
Very interesting

But sad facts. I would love the Giants to sign this kid if he is cleared. I hope they would, but knowing the Giants, I doubt it.
Yes it is extremely sad to say the least.
Watson : 5/2/2015 11:33 pm : link
By all accounts Collins is suppose to be a high character guy. You would like to believe that good people do not do something like this. For this young man you hope he is not involved and can clear his name quickly.

With the incidents of Domestic Abuse last season, I'm sure the league knows alot more than before. If you start to understand some of the statistics, I don't think it's surprising that all teams passed on drafting Collins.

I have to believe Collins "sits" and re-enters the draft next year. He lost a lot of money but if he plays this year for UDFA money and struggles, he really loses.

Depends upon his character and how good he thinks he can be. If he wants to play, I pray the GIANTS go after him HARD.

The league has said as an undrafted player, he's not eligible for the draft again.

Can't re-enter draft, won't allow him in the supplemental
Ten Ton Hammer : 5/3/2015 12:21 am : link
League is being extremely tough on this, it seems.

Don't want anyone skirting their free developmental league.
would be a great signing
msh : 5/4/2015 7:15 pm : link
IF he is innocent,IF he wants to play in new york with the likely media glare he would face he would be a great player for the lowest deal

hope odel and randle are doing their bit to recruit him
no loss here from giants side,no charges no evidence against him no blame on the giants here

if they sign him worst case he turns out to be involved and they cut him no worse than any UDFA that doesnt cut it on the team

they can continue to pay beatty with collins on the roster to cover injury, and by the time hes looking at the next contract they can then decide if collins is worth signing to a longer deal and could use the money they are paying beatty now to pay him instead if not they draft another OT

I wonder how high he would've gone in a supplemental draft?
shockeyisthebest8056 : 5/4/2015 7:21 pm : link
I could certainly see a team like the Redskins giving up next year's 1 to take him.
it will probably never come out
nyynyg : 5/4/2015 7:27 pm : link
I think there was total collusion and all teams were told not to draft him. It is the only explanation. I am shocked not one team spent a 7th on this guy just to retain his rights to negotiate a deal.

Tell him you play one year under your current deal and we'll renegotiate it or whatever. All if you are cleared.
