A few words about free agent pick-up Akeem Hunt...

M.S. : 5/3/2015 8:48 am
...running back (and returner) from Purdue:

(1) Forty years ago I used to see running backs his size get drafted into the NFL-- but now? They would just be worm meat for much bigger predators;

(2) He can't move the pile and his game isn't about breaking tackles at the LOS;

(3) But there is something about this guy that wouldn't surprise me if he somehow, some way snuck onto this roster;

(4) Why? Because of two things. Whenever I saw this guy play on a bad Purdue team, he ran with tremendous athleticism and with a "F*CK-You" attitude;

(5) He goes fast, he veers fast, and he doesn't know that he's a shrimp out there. He runs with arrogance;

(6) He is also a very nice hands catcher who does not break stride when the ball comes his way;

(7) And when the ball is in his hands -- via hand-off or pass -- he is a "frictionless" runner;

(8) He may wash out early, but this guy has talent. He just doesn't have size.

Need to get some play on Specials and try to knock off Orleans Darkwa. That's his primary competition.
He's got to be here as a KR/PR

.
his workout numbers and his size
pjcas18 : 5/3/2015 9:30 am : link
are similar to bradshaw - no clue on his tape and I've never seen him play.

He's around 10 pounds lighter than rookie Bradshaw otherwise they're similar in measurables.
Pro Day suggests that he is a legitimate 4.4 or better guy
Bob in Newburgh : 5/3/2015 9:51 am : link
College production indicates that he is a legitimate KR, but I see nothing about PR which probably means he is not all that sure-handed, but I am projecting here.

At under 190 lbs would Coughlin ever use him as a pass package RB?

...Hunt and Bradshaw are opposite body types.

Bradshaw was made out of molten steel, with muscle on muscle... thick muscle.

Hunt is made out of much more delicate material.

Bradshaw is hugely thick-set.

Hunt could be found modeling Armani suits.

That said... Hunt runs with Bradshaw's arrogance. But it is arrogance wrapped in a much lighter package.

Um
VanPelt/Manning#10 : 5/3/2015 10:29 am : link
didn't we give lots of money to Harris to be our returner?
Van Pelt...

... I think maybe Hunt can make it as a running back.

Clearly not a full time one, but someone who can get carries!

thanks, like I said, never seen the guy, just going by the measureables
Agreed, the small guys who make it are like bowling bowls
PatersonPlank : 5/3/2015 10:37 am : link
Bradshaw, MJD, etc. The small but thinner guys are a dime a dozen, and maybe become 3rd down guys or returners.
He flashes.

I love the way he accelerates towards the end zone rather than relaxing. I predict he'll have a great preseason, and then… who knows? Put him in the slot if VC is stiff.

is not built like Meggett at all.

the flip side, he's much faster than Meggett.
With the ball in his hands,

he reminds me quite a bit of the WR Lance Alworth. He's shorter, and not as thin, and he's more agile, but his stride and body mechanics are eerily similar. Not to suggest that he's in any way clumsy, but he has the same slightly loose, disjointed appearance when transitioning.

Here's a video . . . .

Hall of Famer Alworth.

Good RFA pick up. Worth a shot.
he's small
bc4life : 5/3/2015 12:54 pm : link
when they first signed him I wondered was he a guy who would be better off as a wr who has some designed run plays.

and like they say - nfl rbs have to pass protect, how has he fared in that regard?
As with all Giants RBs
SwirlingEddie : 5/3/2015 1:24 pm : link
You don't play until the coaches trust you to pick up a blitz.
I didn't see enough of him to comment...
M.S. : 5/3/2015 3:54 pm : link

...on his pass blocking.

My guess-- at 187 or something like that, and not thick-set, I could envision him rocked backwards.

But I can say this: if he got rocked back or run over, it wouldn't be for lack of effort ( or courage).

He seems he was used as a WR often

or shifted out of the backfield to become a receiver.
Wonder if he might be worked out as a slot receiver,
particularly if Cruz doesn't return to form quickly.

Nice observation Blue...I'm sure that will have value in this offense.
