The "starter" Flores benched again with an offday tomorrow
PhiPsi125 : 5/3/2015 1:16 pm : link
in favor of the vaunting Tejada.

Just exudes "patience and confidence"
Grandy leads off with a hit
steve in ky : 5/3/2015 1:25 pm : link
Sweet bunt by Lagares for base hit. Would be nice to have a big first inning.
The three days off may be just what Flores needs
steve in ky : 5/3/2015 1:26 pm : link
Hopefully he comes back with a clear head and goes on a tear at the plate.
we can only hope, I guess,
PhiPsi125 : 5/3/2015 1:30 pm : link
that this results in a positive than a negative.

Jury is out on that one.
Team stinks offensively
Rflairr : 5/3/2015 1:32 pm : link
need Wright back badly
Really tough when you have two on with no outs
steve in ky : 5/3/2015 1:34 pm : link
and your 3, 4 & 5 hole hitters can't even drive in at least one run.

They have to take advantage of those spots if they expect to beat a good team. They're not getting the timely hits they were to start the season.
Sometimes I just want to
Headhunter : 5/3/2015 1:35 pm : link
chew glass.
Hate to say it
Rflairr : 5/3/2015 1:39 pm : link
but it all of sudden looks exactly like the team of last season. Awful hitting with RISP. Terrible defense. And striking out a ton. Looks like they're going to need everyone of those games from that hot start.

I think when DW and TDA return it will be different.
They need
Headhunter : 5/3/2015 1:43 pm : link
David Wright and TDA, they need Steven Matz getting the ball every 5th day. They need Noah Syndergaard getting the ball every 5th day
Truth is the only place they're truly better than most teams they face
Eric on Li : 5/3/2015 1:47 pm : link
is in the starting rotation. The BP should develop into an advantage as they get healthier too. But the defense is at best average everywhere except Lagares and the lineup is a bag of somewhat mismatched parts. A lot of guys at various stages of their careers, but really very few of them in their "prime". Probably just Duda/Murphy honestly. This team should be a playoff contender all season and has the upside for even more thanks to all the young talent, but it has legitimate weaknesses.
Yes, I'd love to see Matz and Thor also
PhiPsi125 : 5/3/2015 1:49 pm : link
but it doesn't really matter if they still can't score runs.

Let's hope that DW picks up where he left off but even that's not a given. DW and TdA weren't ALL of their offense before they got hurt. And you can even say that Murphy and Legares have picked up their slack.

They need to be better offensively...period. DW and TdA's absence doesn't excuse that.
I understand that statistically
Headhunter : 5/3/2015 1:53 pm : link
Matz & Thor over the course of their first season might statistically have the same or higher ERA's than the guys they replace. But the one thing they bring to the table is the ability to dominate the other team and put fear of domination in their opponents if they have their good stuff that day. Sure they will have days that they are mediocre, but the fear of playing the Mets know you can be embarrassed is more important than the fear of being shut down by a crafty pitcher who locates and changes speeds. They change the whole perception of the Mets
Nice play by Duda

Don't you think they have to prove it at the MLB level before they start putting the fear of domination in their opponents mind? Neither of them have done jack at the MLB level and I highly doubt that opposing teams will fear them right off the bat. They have to prove it first. Just like Montero, right? :)
I was not a fan of the Tulo trade projection,
GiantBlue : 5/3/2015 2:01 pm : link
But now I have changed my mind. He fixes. A few problems....including our constant goose eggs vs the Nationals.
I think you are right they haven't done it
Headhunter : 5/3/2015 2:04 pm : link
in the Majors but their last couple of games they showed that they could. Matt Harvey wasn't anything more than a touted rookie when he took the mound in Arizona in 2012. He quickly changed that perception. Matz and Syndergaard have the ability and everyone in baseball knows it. You are correct that they haven't done it in the bigs, I can't argue that
Pitching hasn't been the problem
steve in ky : 5/3/2015 2:07 pm : link
Sure they eventually have to find spots for the young pitchers but when you lose games 1-0 like last night that really isn't the biggest concern.

At times I have felt the same...until I realized that the second he got to the Mets he would be hurt and out for the season lol.
Tejada's range is 1,000 times worse than Flores.
PhiPsi125 : 5/3/2015 2:21 pm : link
How do you not get to that ball?
It drives me nuts they didn't upgrade Tejada in the offseason
Eric on Li : 5/3/2015 2:22 pm : link
he is a losing player through and through. Stephen Drew would have been a massive upgrade.
Every game I see Tejada play he's diving for balls he should
PhiPsi125 : 5/3/2015 2:23 pm : link
get to or the ball goes under his glove if he even gets there. He's truly awful.

steve in ky : 5/3/2015 3:07 pm : link
Kevin Long is maybe not quite the genius he was being made out to be the first month of the season.

They need DW and TDA back asap. Too many holes in this lineup that negatively effects it as a whole.

And what's with Dilson, he hasn't really hit at all at the big league level in his two chances.
Just need the team to hang on here....
LoudenSwain : 5/3/2015 4:11 pm : link
Wright may not have a ton of time to get it going. What are they going to do about thor mats and second base? Really an interesting set of circumstances. If we weren't in the middle of a prospective tailspin, I might be enjoying it more.
Just can't get negative when you go into a slump
Headhunter : 5/3/2015 4:15 pm : link
just have to ride it out until it turns around. There are moves that can be made and should be made and I think Alderson does something on the off day tomorrow to try to shake them out of it
hard to blame
pjcas18 : 5/3/2015 4:18 pm : link
any picthers, when you give up two runs COMBINED in the Gee and Niese starts, you have to at least plan on one win, but should really get two.

Mets scored 6 runs in the 4 game series.

that's not a playoff team, need to get the bats going.
11 game win streak followed up by
PhiPsi125 : 5/3/2015 4:23 pm : link
going 3 and 7. Lol, only the mets.

Still waiting to see what the real Mets are like. Wright isnt fixing the offense all on his own.
Duda had a horrid at bat
Ralph.C : 5/3/2015 4:24 pm : link
with second and third.

Yes, we need the wounded back in action. However, we need a young, power-hitting outfielder.

There must be a team that has a fourth guy who is young and up and coming -- like a Kevin Mitchell on the '86 Mets -- that we can pry away with some of our pitching.
When you have 8 hitters and you lose
Headhunter : 5/3/2015 4:25 pm : link
1/4 of them, and they are arguably your 2 best, it's bound to catch up to you. They have to regroup. It feels like we are in last place going nowhere, but the reality is we are in first place. Washington got back Spahn, Werth and they got kick started.

16-10 on may 3 we would of taken when the season started. Were ok should have better week this week with Phillies and orioles

Headhunter : 5/3/2015 4:29 pm : link
There are a lot of good pieces in the pitching and outside of Lagares nobody is hitting. They will start hitting
I don't know the Washington got kickstarted
pjcas18 : 5/3/2015 4:34 pm : link
they scored 2 runs the past three games. Not exactly murderers row.

you just don't expect back to back shutouts.
Yes they will (start hitting) but this is especially bad
steve in ky : 5/3/2015 4:35 pm : link
They said that this was the first time the team has lost back to back 1-0 games to the same team since 1973. I have steadily watched the Mets during that span and they have fielded some horrid teams during that span. I find that stat remarkable.

I just hope that the lack of offense doesn't start to hurt the pitching where the pitchers feel they need to be perfect and don't stay within themselves.
You take your beat downs and move on
Headhunter : 5/3/2015 4:41 pm : link
ranting and raving changes what exactly? I'm as frustrated as anyone here, but that and $2.75 gets me on the NYC subway. I have a lot to look forward to this summer with this team

I mean, it's fun to look at things in a vacuum but it doesn't really work that way. Yes, I'm happy where we are at this point in time. It doesn't mean that I have to be happy with what I've seen over the past 10 games or where things are trending. Where's the power? The Mets are 3 HRs away from the bottom spot in the NL. The Wash starters weren't exactly tearing in up and we still couldn't hit them. Facing the Phillies and Orioles isn't going to change that.

There's no way you can say that DW and TdA would have continued their hot starts through today. It's not that easy. Nobody else did. It's these stretches where your manager makes his money...and we're stuck with Collins. I know there are some that disagree with me, but sitting Flores in favor of Tejada for two straight games before an off day is fucking moronic. Especially when your offense is cold and already down two big players. Tejada is worse offensively AND defensively. Big mistake. Tejada needs to be off this team because he will hang over Flores' head every time he makes an error or has a bad game. It's not effective and extremely poor management.
There is 46 million dollars worth of contracts this year
Earl the goat : 5/3/2015 4:56 pm : link
That are not producing. Granderson. Cuddyer. Wright. Anderson needs to find a bat thru a trade ( Murphy. Gee Niese) to supplement their offense
I'm not worried about Wright, he'll be fine.
PhiPsi125 : 5/3/2015 5:02 pm : link
We've been through Cuddyer over and over again. I'll be happy if we get his career averages...and even that's lofty. Throw his CO numbers out the window. Just forget those years happened because that's not Cuddyer.

Granderson is, well, Granderson. I don't ever expect anything from him and I'm never disappointed. He's awful.

Well, it wouldn't be fair for me to change my mind now. I was okay with it because I was looking at the next 3 to 4 years. This past season doesn't change that for me.

We certainly weren't going to sign anyone better than Melo, and that's why I wanted him signed. Plus, had things gone differently, we weren't in a place to make any noise this year anyway. This season, while it sucked, went as well as it could given our draft positioning. Ask me again midway through next season. Hopefully Melo's injury doesn't take too much away from him, but thats always a fear at his age.
But if you are asking me if I would feel the same
PhiPsi125 : 5/3/2015 5:40 pm : link
had I known about the injury...then no, I would most likely not been an advocate about resigning him.

However, maybe it's a blessing in disguise with the draft. I mean, maybe we can have our Robinson/Duncan moment, lol.
We all knew the Mets weren't as good as their record a week or so ago.
arcarsenal : 5/3/2015 5:48 pm : link
Things are evening out. It's baseball. Most of us had them pegged as an 85-87ish win team and that's probably exactly what they are.
Surprised to read last year's record
Headhunter : 5/3/2015 6:35 pm : link
at this point was 15-11
Murphy is no 5th place hitter either
CGiants07 : 5/3/2015 6:45 pm : link
I saw all I needed today with him. gets to 2-0 vs middle of the pack righty and weak ground out to 1st.

Washingtons rotation is probably one of the best 2 or 3 in baseball. Lets see how they do this week vs Baltimore and philly.

Hopefully Wright will be back by the weekend as we need him. Ideally the lineup when wright comes back is :

Granderson
Lagares
Wright
Duda
Cuddyer
Murphy
Catcher(plaw or tda)
Flores
p

as you cant move lagares back to 7th the way hes hitting

With the exception of Scherzer (which ironically is the one game we won) the Nats pitchers were, and have been, quite hittable. We got our hits, we just couldn't capitalize. Not even a sac fly. Herrera was red hot in AAA. Would of been nice to carry that up here but you cant expect it.

We had many chances to take this game today. Many.

Hoping we snap out of it on Tuesday.
