At the combine he was near 230 which definitely impacted his movement. Would he be better suited for the NFL by losing 15-20lbs? It would certainly help his quickness and explosive movement.
How do I know this?
Did you know Collins was the SPARQ national champ in high school?
SPARQ is: Speed, Power, Agility, Reaction and Quickness. Nike got together many of the best HS athletes and ran combine drills then combine the numbers for a SPARQ score.
Collins, weighing 210lbs, killed it back in 2011 with a score of over 140 (For comparison Reggie Bush was in the 90s and Gold Medal decathlete Brian Gray hit 130).
Collins at 210 lbs ran in the 4.4s with close to a 44" vertical. His short shuttle was 4.2. All numbers that were better than his NFL combine at 230. His vertical was 9" lower at the combine.
Collins could benefit by cutting back down to his HS weight to improve his movement.
BTW, ODI was another SPARQ superstar(who is also a great football player).
Collins SPARQ - (
New Window )
Remember Sehorn? After he freaked out on the sauce, he was a different player altogether. Was slow footed and late on assignments regularly.
Collins at 210 would be scary, IMO.
Truthfully, I think it'd be easier for him to gain 15 pounds than lose it. That's just what his build looks like to me.
I think his playing weight will be largely determined by his role, and I suspect his appeal wasn't primarily his deep coverage skills. The Giants have a fair number of decent, or potentially decent corners, and they may want Collins primarily for playing in the box and blitzing.
I've little doubt that Spags is cooking up a defense that of which Collins was selected with a specific role in mind, and it will be that which determines whether he plays heavy or lighter.
I would be that he drops between 5 and 10 lbs.
I bet a playing weight of 215-220 would be ideal. Coughlin will let him know.
Plus the quickness and movement would improve.
I wish I could get to my age 45 weight :-)
Sure, teams have switched from 4-3 to 3-4 or back depending upon personnel, but I can't think of any players in the past 10 years or so, who would have influenced a defense philosophy like that.
Guys get hurt all the time. Do you find 2 players with the same skillset to build your defense around? Good luck!
There's too many people being scared off by 228,the magic number, and ignoring what happens on the field.I've watched him cover people in the slot,Bama even put him on Kevin White in the West Virginia game. The pick against against Arkansas he was covering a running back.
I don't think it's as simple as he can or he can't cover. He falls somewhere in the middle.
He has such a massive frame. I think he could cut 5-10lbs and sacrifice some beef for a little extra quickness, but I don't think he's going to be able to revert down to HS weight.

e.
Respectfully, those plays you're naming were infront of him. Yes, he made the downhill plays from centefield.
How do you explain the Auburn game though?
He put on weight at Saban's request last year.
I'm all for Collins dropping ten pounds, but what do we know? Somebody should ask the beat reporters to pose that question to Coughlin.
IMO he could shed a few pounds and become a more dynamic athlete. Thanks for sharing the link.
BTW, someone posted a link earlier that showed pseudo-SPARQ scores for all the potential draftees. IIRC Thompson was the 15th safety overall and Davis was the 18th WR overall. Pretty high scores from our late round picks. Clearly top athletic ability for their positions, particularly relative to their draft selection.
And you are correct about Odi - seen it posted a few times around here over the past month that he is an explosive freak of nature.

Bingo. It all comes down to the main role(s) that Spagnuolo wants to utilize him in.

You sound like you're trying to discredit him a little bit,he jumps up and makes the pick like a wide receiver. It was a shitty throw, and he probably won't see one like that again, but that's about all I can say.
The Auburn game I don't have to explain anything because I didn't see it.
Weight or no weight, I think if he learned to run with his knees high he wouldn't have been tripped up so many times.

So you're commenting on a question I had and didn't see the game? Com'on lol. Auburn threw the ball down the middle of the field all day and Collins wasn't even in the picture. 450 yards through the air with strikes right down the middle. Discredit him a little? I'm asking where he was or went or what he was doing?
