FYI.
Jerry Reese Says Victor Cruz is at 85-90 Percent - ( New Window )

I'm very suprised that Reese was as optimistic as he was.
Aren't you?
Andy
Eric from BBI : Admin : 5/4/2015 5:54 pm : link
yes...fingers crossed.

Kind of a weird exchange...he was asked about Geremy Davis...started to sound like he was going to say that Davis was insurance for Cruz...stopped himself and said he thought Cruz would be 100 percent.
He said Giants only signed 4 RFAs
ZogZerg : 5/4/2015 6:10 pm : link
All they had room 4.
I think our roster i very much improved from last year
Daniel in Kentucky : 5/4/2015 6:10 pm : link
No notable losses besides Rolle, who hopefully will be replaced by a much younger and talented Collins.
super excited.

yeah....almost as if Cruz made major strides over the last few weeks. A few weeks ago Reese seemed much more cautions. Regardless, I'm siked...and as you say, fingers crossed.

they may cut a couple of guys to make more room.
Thanks Eric for

Fingers crossed on Victor.

I think the Cruz caution was a smokescreen

Perception of interest in White, Cooper, ...
Interview made me go back and check out the Davis pick
BillT : 5/4/2015 6:39 pm : link
guy has excellent measurables. 4.49 at his pro day top combine bench press (23) for any WR, 4.18 shuttle and 6.86 3 cone, 36 vert, 10.5' b jump. Excellent college production (165 for 2,292) and 6'3" 216. Thought he was a PS guy but he could surprise.

Eric from BBI : Admin : 5/4/2015 6:44 pm : link
No, Cooper was #1 on their board.
I see Geremy Davis as a David Tyree

He doesn't really separate at the collegiate level...Coughlin even admitted that. Curious pick.

Obviously something about him he was predicted 6/7. But he's got measurables like the 2nd, 3rd, 4th round guys. Maybe a little coaching can help. Some route running technique? Who knows.
Probably the company
bluepepper : 5/4/2015 7:57 pm : link
line to be optimistic on Cruz. Victor is being very positive and the Giants want to encourage him in his rehab and not be downers.
Davis is much better prospect than David Tyree.
Four Aces : 5/4/2015 8:28 pm : link
Tyree wasn't a very accomplished WR in college and was drafted mainly as a special team ace. And developed over a number of yrs in the NFL be an average WR.

He was able to separate when needed from the games I noticed. But his QB and the OL was so poor in college he didn't run a lot of deep routes and the anticipation in the passing offense was almost non-existent so by the time he received the pass he had a DB on him.
I think he can improve as a route runner and be a very solid NFL WR
Four Aces : 5/4/2015 8:32 pm : link

Was anything said about the other saftey we drafted
superspynyg : 5/4/2015 8:37 pm : link
In the 5th round.
Coughlin said,

"I don’t know if he is going to separate the way some of people that we have would, but he is going to contribute on special teams as well."

This is very different Eric than saying that Davis can't separate. Just that he may not separate like the other WRs on the roster.

Four Aces
Eric from BBI : Admin : 5/4/2015 8:48 pm : link
there are only a few ways to separate...deep speed, quickness, route running. The Giants have all of that right now.

To me, Coughlin is politely saying he has trouble separating. Look at him on tape...almost every throw to him the DB is right on top of him.

Pete in VA : 5/4/2015 8:50 pm : link
Watch a couple game tapes on Draft Breakdown. He clearly does not separate very well. But, he does seem to have great hands, and his size allows him to post up/ On tape, he plays like a tight end over the middle. I could see him playing in the slot on a matchup basis.

And who knows. Maybe they can teach him how to get separation.
He

had a high ankle sprain his senior year, but the clips I've seen on him are from 2013.

Right now I think the assumption has to be that he may well have trouble separating. But he can still box out defenders with his size and strength, like Nicks. He has excellent hands. He also had bad QB at UConn, which may have affected his ability to separate.
If Davis has one play
David B. : 5/4/2015 9:30 pm : link
in his career as a Giant, that is as monumental as the helmet catch, he'll be worth whatever they picked him at.
Eric
Four Aces : 5/4/2015 10:33 pm : link
I just think the QB play so poor that it may appear that way. From the clips, I've seen the ball was rarely on time or well thrown. But in the Michigan game which you linked in another thread he catches a deep pass in the end zone on a well thrown ball and lunges for a TD displaying some speed. I think he has decent speed. A 4.48 on his pro day certainly says he has at least that.

And yes there are many ways to separate but I interpreted Coughlin
Four Aces : 5/4/2015 10:46 pm : link
comments to mean he's not going to consistently separate like an OBJ or Cruz with deep speed or quicks. That's not his calling card. Doesn't mean he's devoid of any quicks or speed and can't separate at all.

Coughlin was essentially stating what I deemed to be obvious. That Davis is a bigger, physical WR and more of a possession WR than any of the other WRs on the current roster. His job will be to make the tough, contested catches and use his length. We currently don't have a WR like that on the roster outside of Washington who barely played last he.

I really like our wideouts this year
SGMen : 5/4/2015 11:17 pm : link
Our starters are obviously OBJ, Randle and Cruz in the slot (if healthy).

You figure D. Harris backs up Cruz as the slot guy over Parker.

I believe C. Washington and M. Harris make the team as well. They played well for raw, young guys in a new offense. I see a bright future for both of them. That makes for 7 wideouts and we won't carry that money.

The rookie is PS material this year UNLESS injuries hit or something.
Yeah I see OBJ, Cruz, Randle, D. Harris, and Soup
Four Aces : 5/4/2015 11:24 pm : link
as locks. So the question is if the Giants carry 6 or 7 WRs this yr and how much has Washington improved. I think Davis can bump Washington off the roster.
Unless Soup isnt the same player we saw last preseason who caught

everything in sight.
Don't forget about the Harris guys

Are you saying that Harris will knock Parker off the roster?

Parker is the quintessential "Coughlin guy." Tough, hard-working, fiery, special teams player. Does all the little things. He is Coughlin's David Tyree right now, only he's a better wideout. Seems like he has earned Coughlins trust and that usually ends up saving a few guys from getting cut over youngsters with a higher ceiling and less experience (Corey Washington, the Harris's, etc).

Davis
AcidTest : 5/5/2015 10:43 am : link
won't "take the top off" the defense. But he still has value as a big possession receiver. He also plays ST. I think this is about pushing Washington, and in case Randle leaves next year.
It is obvious where they want to use Davis the most
Mason : 5/5/2015 10:55 am : link
and how they would like to use him.

Fade left, red zone on 3. Break!
Davis is going to be used
MotownGIANTS : 5/5/2015 12:18 pm : link
as a red zone jumpball guy and mismatch guy in the spread O....

Harris is the good version of Parker. He's better than Parker at everything.
Shouldn't have said Harris's.

I was referring to guys like Washington, Marcus Harris, Ogletree, Talley, Harper, etc. Dwayne Harris is obviously not going anywhere. He makes more than Beckham.

for short box-out type routes where the wr gets grabbed quickly; those do have a use.

you kind of want to free Randle up from those duties so he can run free and take advantage of having Odell.

So, you have the free agent WR and the 6th rounder, both can play specials and both can probably to the box-out and take a beating stuff.

Randle. Harris the free agent and the kid Geremy, all players that should be able to block as well, for Vereen and whomever.
also
idiotsavant : 5/5/2015 3:23 pm : link
you have a bunch of players from the roster that will get more time, wrs, corners, safeties.

that's not a bad thing. lets see who from last years roster break out this year.

overall, I am sticking with a:

B grade

When did Harris get to be such a star. He's a 26 year old Arena League refugee never was. Parker is no great shakes and he has caught 75 passes in the NFL which is 75 more than Harris has caught.

BBI develops the strangest attachments to certain players.
I don't see anyone calling Harris a star.

But, fact is he has an excellent spring and would have been a part of the team last year had he not gotten hurt.
