If a deal could be made: Wilkerson or La'el Collins?

KingBlue : 5/5/2015 7:06 am
Assuming Collins is not involved in the murder of his ex girlfriend and assuming the Jets would deal Wilkerson, who would you prefer?

I would love Wilkerson to be paired with Hankins and I would love to add Collins to our young talent on the OL.

Tough call... but I have to go with the big DT. I hope Reese is talking to the Jets to see what it would take to land Wilkerson.
Wilk..

well, we know Wilerson isn't going to Foxboro

perhaps the new management in Jestsville will inquire, but slick billy will want an arm and a leg. :)
Normally I would say Wilk

But I feel our online would be have such great depth with Collins. Plus he would not cost a pick.

Otoh, Wilk is a young all-pro..Collins hasn't taken a snap..I'd give up a 3 and a 5 for him...But that's just me
Collins. IMHO protecting Eli is always our Top Priority.

As stated above, both would be great fits...
KingBlue : 5/5/2015 7:34 am : link
I just think we have an opportunity to really strengthen our defense up the middle. I love the Landon Collins pick and especially his effectiveness against the run. Odi, although raw is reported to have huge upside and is already projected to be an excellent run defender. Add Wilkerson and we are vastly improved.
they could do both
msh : 5/5/2015 7:35 am : link
collins will be cheap enough and now the jets got williams in the draft its clear the jets are open to offers for wilkerson would be a great pick for the giants and vitually no upheaval on wilkerson part as he already playing at met life anyway

great insurance incase the giants cant get a deal done by week1 with jpp (but im hopeful they can) odi is raw and wilkerson would be able to step in week1 and play opposite jpp with odi taking rotational snaps and working his way in as the season progresses could be the makings of the nascar package version 2 for spags if they could snag him
Wilkerson
Matt in SGS : 5/5/2015 7:39 am : link
will cost a first rounder at the least. And on top of that, you would have to pay him as soon as the deal was made or else you will have a contract problem on your hands. With the Giants current cap situation and the fact that JPP has been franchised but not signed, make Wilkerson a non-option, though I'd love to have him.

Collins is a more realistic fit within the cap and on the roster. However, I think the Giants want to go into 2015 with as few distractions as possible and get ready for a run. Remember, the entire coaching staff is on notice this year. No playoffs mean Coughlin is gone. And if Coughlin is gone, a new coach comes in and will likely clean house. They don't need to be in the middle of a media circus with a murder. The Giants are at their best when they fly under the radar. Let Chip's craziness keep everyone's attention. We know that Jerruh will be good for a bunch of dumb things said during camp. And RGIII is his own side show. The Giants have Flowers, they are getting healthy on the offensive line, let them just settle in and go from there in year 2 of McAdoo.
Matt, impact vs price..
KingBlue : 5/5/2015 7:48 am : link
I think Wilkerson is worth a first round pick. And I agree his contract would need to be factored in... If the Giants want him, I have to believe they could get it done. However, I suspect if he becomes available other teams could outspend the Giants for his services.
what Matt
JonC : 5/5/2015 7:51 am : link
The reason the Jets are considering trading him is financial, it's his turn to get paid. NYG is unlikely to pay both draft picks and big extension.
it's gotta be Collins
giants#1 : 5/5/2015 7:59 am : link
I get the whole "unproven" argument, but Wilkerson is likely going to cost a 1st and he's in the last year of his deal. He's going to be looking for at least what JPP ends up signing for, if not Suh like money. Someone's going to give him $15M per in FA and unless the Giants are letting JPP walk, it's unlikely to be from them. So he'd be a 1 year rental.

Jon, wasn't the main reason Idzik said he spent no money last year was because he knew he was going to have to pay Wilkerson and others?
Wilkerson
Headhunter : 5/5/2015 8:06 am : link
we Victor Cruz from the Jets, how did that turn out?
BHE
JonC : 5/5/2015 8:09 am : link
I don't recall, though it would make sense as a public comment that may or may not have any real bite. But with Idzik out, the new GM might want to run in a new direction and pile up assets.
I think as Matt points out, the only viable one of the two is Collins
jcn56 : 5/5/2015 8:19 am : link
Regarding the distraction, IMO - for the Bills and Dolphins to be pursuing him, means that they've seen enough from NFL security/investigations to believe there's little risk that Collins will be implicated.
Collins, easily for me
UConn4523 : 5/5/2015 8:45 am : link
no interest in giving up a 1st and a huge contract. I have no doubt Wilk would be a big upgrade, but I'd rather keep the cap flexible as well as keeping the 2016 first rounder.
Wilkerson would be great but probably a cap buster unless you
Victor in CT : 5/5/2015 8:51 am : link
let JPP go. If Collins is clean, I won't do everything I could to sign him. 2 1st talents for the OL, both mean and nasty, in one draft with one coming cheap is irrestible.

Victor Cruz did not come from the Jets. He was signed by the Giants the day after the 2010 draft.

Cruz went undrafted in the 2010 NFL Draft and was signed the day after the draft by the New York Giants.

2010 season[edit]
In a preseason game against the New York Jets on August 16, 2010, Cruz helped the Giants win 31-16 by catching 6 passes for 145 yards and 3 touchdowns. He would finish the preseason leading the NFL with 297 receiving yards, tied for the preseason lead with 4 touchdown catches, and was selected to the Giants' 53-man regular season roster. Cruz played in five games at the start of the season, before a hamstring injury placed him on injured reserve for the remainder of the year.

Could the case be made for Wilk over JPP?
KingBlue : 5/5/2015 9:04 am : link
There is no guarantee that we will be able to sign JPP. Factor in his injury history. Wilk would be a heck of a consolation prize in the event JPP walks.
25 year-old star with limitless ceiling
Big Blue '56 : 5/5/2015 9:09 am : link
to make our DL almost instantly one of the better ones in the league is a slam dunk for me..Go ahead and pay him..If you can't workout a decent cap deal with JPP, let him go next year..He's a sure bet..Collins isn't, no matter how much he's thought of at this point..imo

Cap buster?
KingBlue : 5/5/2015 9:14 am : link
Haven't I read that there will be a huge increase in the cap in 2016? Is it possible to fit both under the cap?
The cap should be going up
JonC : 5/5/2015 10:07 am : link
but NYG is apparently in no rush to spend, given the contract statuses of Eli, JPP, and Prince, for starters.

Honestly
Old Dirty Beckham : 5/5/2015 10:08 am : link
why is this even a thread? The Jets aren't going to trade one of their top young players to the Giants.
I really can't believe this comparison
Bob in Newburgh : 5/5/2015 11:04 am : link
Leaving money and off-field issues out of it.

Collins could be an NFL bust.

Wilkerson is a great NFL player. The only possible question, and it is relatively minor, has to do with the transition from 3-4 DE (although the Jets move him around on passing downs) to 4-3 DT. You could project him as a 4-3 LDE, but he would lack the beat OT out of his stance pure speed rush.
Collins
NYG4246 : 5/5/2015 10:42 pm : link
wilkerson would clog the cap.
The Jets wouldn't trade the Giants a signed Vernon Gholston jersey

Woody would have Leonard Williams tackle the UPS guy prior to arriving at Metlife.
