NFT Stephen Drew's Yankee Career

RetroJint : 5/5/2015 8:25 am
to date: 214 ABs. 150 AVG. You have to go back to '68 when the Yankees hit 214 as a team to find a number that bad. Guys like Frank Fernandez & Dick Howser pulled in at a comparable average. They had truncated roles. Tom Tresh batted 195, with 76 BBs, as a regular. For the uninitiated , after the 68 season, they lowered the mound & shortened the Zone, so this was low ebb.

What to do? How long do you stay with him? I usually organize by the Holidays. Memorial ....Fourth? They already are carrying Didi, who is going to amass a whole train car full of outs. Stephen is past the point in his career when he can be expected to reverse such a calamitous slide. The talk of him "needing a spring training" was silly, of course. We mentioned that when they decided to sign him.
Plays the field like Tarzan

2 of them?

Or 3? Right now Ellsbury & Gardner have artificially high AVGs & OBPs. Those will come down. Then the holes in the order elsewhere will be felt.
Wonder how Gardner feels about Ellsbury having double the contract

after Brian (Pee Wee Herman) Cashman called them "'the same player".

& redundancy not exactly a good thing, eh? Gardner is my favorite Yankee. Backwoods South Carolina baseball. They are both good players but they will cool off.

I like Gardner too. I was skeptical at first that he would be a full time player but he proved me wrong.

I did not like the Ellsbury signing. Too much $$ for a guy who is hurt too often and isn't significantly better than a guy on your roster
We seem to be winning.

So if his def value out weighs his bat, as long as the yanks keep winning I can deal with it.

He signed it, he didn't have to. Why would he complain?

Well the Ellsbury of his Super Season would be nice. I thought they gave him way too much money.

Spy: they are for now. But a lineup riddled with holes will eventually wreck your deeply held aspirations. But I'm glad they swept Boston in the Bean. That's like a beautiful woman waiting for you
Plus Gardner
LS : 5/5/2015 9:28 am : link
signed his contract 3 months after Ellsbury signed his. So he knew what Ellsbury was getting.
I would be done with Drew, except to
LS : 5/5/2015 9:31 am : link
compete, and back up, at SS. Only one of him or Didi should be in the line up. Bring Pirela up.

They're DHjng him.....which means?
That he

can hit.
DH is locked

Ordinarily when a guy comes off the DL, he plays in the field before he goes up. He or Refsnyder, if/when it's time?
I would like to see
LS : 5/5/2015 10:28 am : link
Refsnyder continue to play every day and get the reps until he is ready. I see Pirela as a future platoon/utility player that can improve the offense over Drew right now.
If the Yanks hadn't bid against themselves
xman : 5/5/2015 10:33 am : link
to sign Drew for 5 million what other team would have invited him to camp let alone thought about giving him even 1 million dollars? Cashman faux pas
LS Yes
RetroJint : 5/5/2015 10:42 am : link
& X-Man no faux pas by you
Pirela will be up soon
bxgiants4 : 5/5/2015 10:49 am : link
The concussion set him back

Forget refsnyder. Not happening. The brass and media who have seen him play says he's not ready defensively. He's not coming up any time soon
I understand
LS : 5/5/2015 10:57 am : link
bring Drew in last year as an audition of sorts. Well, he flunked that. Then to want him as a backup shortstop option at say a mil, OK. But 5 mil for second base? That's a head scratcher.
Yea

Pirela will be up soon. Drew is brutal to watch. But Pirela will be up soon. Pirela will be up soon, right?

Do not be so sure on that regarding Refsnyder. If Drew is in the doldrums and Ref is hitting .300 or so and not averaging an error or two a week I'd be surprised if he's not up in six weeks or so.

They bat him with concerns over lingering concussion symptoms ? I sort of agree about Refsnyder but your presumptions about Pirella are off. BTW I've seen him play 3 times this year. I know he has the 7 errors but I see a big improvement over his play from last August. Whoever is going up, if either is, he will get the dose of reps at second.

I've done this very well over the years. Earned a reputation for accuracy in the business. Refsnyder is the next great Yankee hitter. Pirella sprays the buck shot & that's ok too. Plus Reggie loves him, too, right? But the Straw who stirs the drink also said that Reuben Rivera was a sure-fire superstar, correct? That's the guy who stole Jeter's glove?
on drew...

Need a good right handed bat that can play short and second, or at least second. Beltran looks to be getting close, and that will help the lineup, but they will need some help along the line, no doubt.
