Davis has more talent and upside then Tyree ever dreampt of having. He has everything you look for in a WR,except for great quickness. Neither did Amani Toomer and he turned out pretty good for the Giants.
Davis has excellent size, and good, strong hands. He's very good at high pointing the ball, out muscling and leaping at the most precise moment.
Everything I've heard about this dude tells me he's able and willing to work extremely hard at his craft.
If he doesn't supplant Corey Washington in the preseason I'd be extremely surprised.
I'm actually excited about this 6th round selection, and that doesn't happen very often,if ever!! I think it was a good pick by reese and CO...
And Eric, let's not make Corey Washington to be an untouchable now. The guy got so much playing time last season, he even had time to express his gratitude to the Giants coaching staff about his opportunity and his future via social media.
Beckham.
Randle.
D. Harris
M. Harris.
Washington.
Davis.
Ogletree, Parker, Talley, Criner, and Harper are cut. Cruz starts on the PUP. If Cruz is ready to go, then maybe they carry seven. Davis has a reasonable chance to make the 53 because he plays ST, unlike apparently Washington, and Randle may be gone next year. The simple truth is that most of our WRs are JAGs. But then all of our TEs are. We have nobody besides Beckham who can take "the top off" the defense.
And Eric, let's not make Corey Washington to be an untouchable now. The guy got so much playing time last season, he even had time to express his gratitude to the Giants coaching staff about his opportunity and his future via social media.
Reese never made a comparison of Davis and Tyree.
Definitely keeping: OBJ, Randle, Cruz, D. Harris
That leaves 2 spots which to me is:
A veteran: M. Harris vs P. Parker
A developmental: C. Washington vs G. Davis
The others are camp fodder: Ogletree, Talley, Harper, and Criner
Over Tyree's career at Syracuse, he ranked 13th on the career receiving record list with 1,214 yards, including 229 yards against Virginia Tech in 2002. He also developed a reputation for being an excellent special teams player, amassing six blocked punts.[3]

Top 7: OBJ, Randle, Cruz, D. Harris,M.Harris,Washington,Davis...Parker's ceiling is established and not very high.
I think Soup makes the team. A few months back Reese specifically cited Soup as one to look out for this year.
Washington is a talent but the Giants don't like his inability to grasp concepts. I would hate to cut him as I think he would be very effective at minimum in a modified role. Red zone, certain types of patterns etc.

I also wouldn't discard Parker so easily. He works his butt off and does everything he is asked to do. He is a trusted Coughlin favorite.
As for the snarky comment about CT, it seems as though the people who have actually seen the kid play have a better of opinion of him than those who never heard of him until he was announced on draft day. Maybe you should listen a little bit to those who know about him.

Parker may stick but Harris if healthy is very likely going to make the team. They love that kid.

I think no ST play for Washington was the problem that the coaching staff had with him last season and why he was inactive so much. I mean the guy left tweets about his situation with the Giants as reference.

Quote:
“Davis is a David Tyree, Jason Avant kind of guy, can be your fourth or fifth receiver and play special teams,” Reese said.
A Giant scout said Davis reminded him of Jason Avant who is/was a much better WR than Tyree ever was. Davis' measurables and college production backs that up. Tyree was a complete developmental project as a WR coming out of Syracuse. He was strictly a special teams ace who developed over the years as a competent WR.
I think Reese mentioned Tyree to illustrate roles as a 4th-5th WR who plays on special team.
As far as WR abilities, he has much more upside than Tyree ever did.
Also, the more I think about it, the more I think that Washington must be an idiot. He showed alot in preseason even against backups but that's how Cruz started out. But, Washington is refusing to play specials or not giving the right effort an how do you keep a 4th or 5th WR on the roster who is not helping out in other areas. And, to me, at the NFL level, specials is as much about attitude than anything else. For this guy to open his mouth and complain is just stupid when his future is pretty much in his hands. I'm curious to see if he grew up this year or grew a pair of cojones.

But he did in fact used Tyree to compare Davis. I am trying to guess what Reese meant only state that he was the one to bring up the Tyree comparison not BBI.

You'd hear no complaints from me.
As to Davis' comparables, he's bigger than Nelson Agholor, the Eagles 1st Round pick, has a quicker first step, quicker in the short shuttle, almost as quick in the 3 cone but Agholor is a lot faster in the 40 at 4.42 vs. 4.49; Davis has a quicker first step than Amari Cooperand and is quicker than Kevin White in the 3 cone.
My point is that considering that Davis was picked in the 6th Round, he has very good athleticism, represents very good value in the 6th Round and plays Special Teams, which Corey Washington has not done to date.
he looks solid physically, and seems to protect himself well when he goes down and protects the football, rather than getting greedy and losing it and/or having his legs hammered.
he would be used for the short to medium routes, across the middle, sideline, what have you, grab the ball and go down without turning in over or getting injured.
it does sort of fit a need, if Odell is doing everything on the route tree a WR can do, if Randle is going mid to deep and trying to get the RACs,
Geremey, in addition to the Vereen and Co. at RB, and the TE's, you want a variety of options to grab short and medium, take a beating from the defenders and be reliable.
he looks like a kid that can block in the running game and on screens.
he looks like a kid that can play on specials and take a beating, freeing up other, more valuable WRs and corners from a spot there.
he seems to get the part about possession being the big factor. Knows his role.
he played on a crap O, (from a few youtubes - 10 minutes) and might do better as a #4 player on a much more varied and better O, rather than a go to guy on an overmatched team.
then you are constantly switching up the short and medium
the running back passes,
vs. a tight end pass,
vs. a run,
or a short pass to a wr who can handle that physically and knows his part.
if the kid shows his stuff in all sorts of blocking downfield situations and on specials, that will be his key, in addition to protecting the football and getting those 5 to 15 yarders
Davis is a big wide receiver who plays big and attacks the ball up in the air. Many young receivers come into the league and despite 6-2+ size they are body catchers who don't have a large catch radius (cough..Rueben Randle). Davis excels in this department. He will go up and make the play and has the large soft hands to complement this attribute perfectly. Without this ability he would have likely had 30 less receptions his junior year as his quarterback play lead to endless amount of jump ball situations.
The concerns about his separation are real. Despite Jerry saying he is a good route runner, when I watched him it appeared that he rounded off a lot of his routes and did not have quick decisive moves to create separation. His measurables however showed he isn't just a straight line speed guy as his 20 yard splits and 3 cone showed agility. This did lead me to wonder if the fact that Davis played under 4 different head coaches and 4 different offensive coordinators in his 5 years at Uconn helped lead to poor technique in his route running which did not allow his natural talents to play up. You add on top of this the horrific Quarterback play that would discourage even the most passionate receiver (minimal attempts per game beyond 5 yards, and most of those passes to the other team) and his lack of separation could have been attributed to poor coaching/poor QB play taking him out of the game mentally. Hell, look at the stats of their game against USF; 9 total passes all game, Geremy receiving one attempt his way and he took it for a 32 yard touchdown.
When you take a step back and see the tools he does bring to the table (size, speed, hands, toughness and plus special teams play) and enough question marks to not totally dismiss potential for growth in route running; add in the fact that we are talking about a six round draft pick, and you can justify why the Giants made the pick.
At the absolute very least, they just sent a great reminder to Corey Washington that effort and special teams play do not go unnoticed.
Marcus Harris? He's 26 and has never caught a football in a real game. He's not some treasured prospect IMO.
I liked Parker too...not sure why he doesn't get more talk, though I am certainly willing to learn.
