Giants random trivia time

Matt in SGS : 5/6/2015 10:19 am
Ok, draft is over, rookie camp coming up. I'm finishing up a few old game reviews and I'm already bored. So that means trivia time. We all have google, so let's try to use honor system here to see how good your memories are.

Here is the question:

Since 1984, the Giants have had 8 running backs gain 1000 yards in a season for them (Joe Morris, OJ Anderson, Rodney Hampton, Gary Brown, Tiki Barber, Brandon Jacobs, Derrick Ward, and Ahmad Bradshaw).

In that same amount of time, since 1984, the Giants have had 9 running backs on their roster who rushed for over 1000 yards in another season on a different pro team. And...go.
OJ Anderson

I thought the Peagram one would stump many people.

Bonus question. There was another 1000 yard season for a Giants running back on the roster. It was in a pro league. But not the NFL.

Mo Carthon
Maurice Carthon for the bonus question?

NJ Generals?
Yes it was Carthon

I had him on my FF team in '93 and '95 :)

djm : 5/6/2015 10:43 am : link
Mo Carthon!

I think he did so with the Generals...

Didn't Rob Carpenter rush for 1000 with the Oilers?

and for the record
djm : 5/6/2015 10:43 am : link
I thought of Mo before the hint from Matt!
nope
djm : 5/6/2015 10:45 am : link
Carpenter did not rush for 1000 before or during his career in NY. I forgot he had close to 800 yards in 84...wouldn't have guessed that..
I'm impressed, I thought that would take
Matt in SGS : 5/6/2015 10:45 am : link
a little longer for everyone to plow through.

Let me try to find a little tougher one. Since 1984, the Giants have had 7 guys on their roster who came from the Ivy League. Name them.
Finn, Elias, DeOssie

Kenny Hill of Yale

Wasn't Boothe an Ivy Leaguer too?

Even closer. He started a bit of controversy at the rookie camp.

Bingo. Back in the rookie camp, Hatch asked for an injury waiver and insurance before he did any drills to protect himself. This was not a normal request and the Giants balked at it as he refused to take the field and they eventually came to an agreement. Figures it was an Ivy guy to know all about the business ends and liabilities.
Jeff Hatch! Damn, not sure how I forgot it was him
Greg from LI : 5/6/2015 11:02 am : link
One of Ernie's awesome pre-2004 draftees. Third goddamned round for that guy. He was awful.
Damn it! Should have known it was Hatch!.

Ok, let's step it up a little
Matt in SGS : 5/6/2015 11:10 am : link
in the 1990 draft, there was a butting of heads between George Young and Bill Parcells on who the first round pick should be. The pick ended up being Rodney Hampton, who ended up retiring as the Giants all time leading rusher. Who did Parcells want to draft instead of Hampton?
aw man....it was a linebacker who never did anything in the league
Greg from LI : 5/6/2015 11:13 am : link
.
Darion Conner
YAJ2112 : 5/6/2015 11:14 am : link
?
I wanna say
djm : 5/6/2015 11:14 am : link
Darrion Connor LB?
Didn't Junior Seau go in that draft
figgy2989 : 5/6/2015 11:16 am : link
Can't see it being him as the Chargers were terrible and picked before us.
Yes
Matt in SGS : 5/6/2015 11:16 am : link
Darion Conner drafted by the Falcons at the top of the 2nd round and bounced around the NFL.
that's it!
Greg from LI : 5/6/2015 11:16 am : link
Couldn't remember his name
Who was the last Giant to wear #56 before LT?
Greg from LI : 5/6/2015 11:17 am : link
Probably too easy, but oh well.
Jim Klack>?
djm : 5/6/2015 11:18 am : link
...center I believe
ok now time to get unfair
Matt in SGS : 5/6/2015 11:18 am : link
The Giants blocked 1 punt in 1989. Who blocked it and who was it against?
Tom Flynn?
djm : 5/6/2015 11:20 am : link
that dude blocked punts every year it seems but he may have been gone already.
yes it was center Jim Clack
Greg from LI : 5/6/2015 11:20 am : link
.
Wayne Haddix?
Greg from LI : 5/6/2015 11:21 am : link
I got nothin'
Reyna Thompson
figgy2989 : 5/6/2015 11:21 am : link
He was a stud on specials????
djm
Matt in SGS : 5/6/2015 11:22 am : link
good guess, but no. Flynn actually only blocked 1 punt, which he did in 1986 against the Packers, and he returned it for a TD and it happened a few weeks after he was released by Green Bay. He would score on blocked punts in 1987 at Chicago (blocked by Erik Howard) and 1988 vs. the Redskins (blocked by Gary Reasons).
Haddix and Reyna. Nope
Matt in SGS : 5/6/2015 11:23 am : link
good guesses.

A hint, he joined the team mid season.
hmm
djm : 5/6/2015 11:28 am : link
Duerson joined in the 90 off-season I believe..

crap that's a tough one...
I cheated to look that one up
YAJ2112 : 5/6/2015 11:32 am : link
never would have gotten that one in a million years otherwise.
one more hint
Matt in SGS : 5/6/2015 11:32 am : link
he was a former Philadelphia Eagle.
who did LT say he took the number 56
aquidneck : 5/6/2015 11:32 am : link

The Giants 1990 Championship roster had 4 Linebackers who were at least a top 3 pick in the first round in their respective drafts. Who were they?

LT, Carl Banks, Johnie Cooks

No idea on the fourth....it wasn't Pepper, Reasons or DeOssie
Yup
Matt in SGS : 5/6/2015 12:47 pm : link
you guys got those first 3 guys.

Who was the fourth? A slight hint, he was the unfortunate soul who got smashed by William Perry on his TD run in Super Bowl XX (and later Ditka regretted because it took a TD chance away from Walter Payton).

FJ : 5/6/2015 1:20 pm : link
If you're thinking of Larry McGrew, he was a 2nd round pick.
FJ
Matt in SGS : 5/6/2015 4:02 pm : link
D'oh! You are right. Wikipedia lied to me, they had him as a first rounder and I just double checked and you were right, he was a second rounder. I should have gone with the multiple source validation.

I watched
Eric from BBI : Admin : 5/7/2015 7:32 am : link
the 1999 New York Giants highlight tape recently...

Do you guys realize that Phil Simms three for 300 yards in a game in 1993 and the team didn't have a QB throw for another 300 yards in a single game until Kerry Collins against the Jets in 1999? That's an incredibly pathetic record of quarterbacking (David Brown, Danny Kannell, Kent Graham).
Eric
FJ : 5/7/2015 8:48 am : link
To be fair, Dave Brown did hit 298 yards once - that's pretty damn close to 300.
it didn't help that they didn't have any receivers either
