2014 v 2015 - NYG better, worse of same

Pep22 : 5/6/2015 10:57 am
Since we essentially have no injuries now, we should be better in most cases:

QB - same or better with more knowledge of the offense, which is just fine.

RB - Better. Very diverse workmanlike group. Vereen adds a dimension. Williams should get better. I think Hunt has a good chance to get better.

WR - Better. Big IF = Cruz's health. Addition of Harris and return of "soup" Harris is welcomed.

TE - About the same. Perhaps Vereen takes some catches away from Donnell. Would have loved to go w O'Leary over Davis in the 6th.

LT - Same.

LG - Better. One would think Pugh would be an upgrade especially if he pulls well.

C - Better. Natural and talented center replaces natural and not too talented center.

RG - Better. Schwartz coming back should be an improvement over Jerry.

RT - TBD. Let's hope Flowers doesn't have a ton of technique problems.

DE - Same. JPP.

DT - Unless Bromley steps up, I think they made a major mistake not addressing this beyond Ellis. Michael Bennett would have been a great Rd 5 selection.

DT - Hank. Same - which is fine.

DE - Big upgrade with Moore (Spags should serve him well), Selvie, and Double O. Any of these guys can play on the other side as well.

LB - Better. I think Kennard beats out McClain.

MLB - Slightly better. Beason backed up by Thomas. The latter is probably better than 2014. But 2014 was woeful.

LB - TBD - If they like Casillas over Williams than so be it.

CBs - DRC and Prince just need to stay healthy.

Slot CB - I think they did a poor job not replacing Hosley w one of the many slot CBs in this draft.

Safety - Collins big upgrade but no free safety type on the roster unless you count the Texas kid who has UDFA talent.

On paper, better..Perhaps much better..

If we sustain normal, non-crippling injuries, similar to many teams, I'm quite optimistic..

SoZKillA : 5/6/2015 11:03 am : link
Alfonzo Dennard Was cut by the Patriots yesterday, we should bring him in and let him compete for the slot CB spot
nice player

but really checkered past
RB Hunt

I meant I think he has a good chance to make the team
Disagree on DT,
Joe in CT : 5/6/2015 11:10 am : link
sure we all want Bromley to show something this year which would give us a better rotation but no way would Bennett have been an upgrade, to undersized and is going to have all kind of issues coming off blocks...NFW.
not bad pep22...

I like McBride in the slot
Lionhart28 : 5/6/2015 11:21 am : link
but there isn't much depth behind him. I think that's a position where we see some vet signings this summer. Also would like to see a veteran 2 way TE.
better

I think the loss of Rolle
Giantfan in skinland : 5/6/2015 11:28 am : link
looms large. I was never a huge fan of his, to be honest, especially in his earlier days with the Giants. However, he was at worst competent throughout and at his high points, the glue that seemed to be holding together the secondary.

I like Collins' talent and the other young safeties on the roster...but it's a lot of youth/inexperience/unknown. Even talented guys take a while to figure things out sometimes, especially when playing next to another newbie. It's a boom/bust situation...but I think people need to realize this has the potential to be a real weak spot (especially in the short term) for this defense (and all the more so if there are significant injuries).
You are missing the biggest area of improvement: special teams
Eli's Got This Stuff : 5/6/2015 11:30 am : link
I think they have upgraded the DE position. Ellis will make a big impact in the run. Spags should hopefully be a big improvement over fewell and recapture his old glory. I don't feel as good about the CB position but I like the young talent at S. Linebackers should be ok but nothing special once beason goes down for the year

Offensively biggest improvement: continuity and development

I like our TE group much better than last year and it's the same 3 guys. OL will hopefully begin developing into a strength this year. The RB group I think is vastly improved by adding vereen, giving dreWill another year, and the improved OL play should really help the backs productions.

Cruz is the wildcard
We have more to gain than most
BillT : 5/6/2015 11:33 am : link
Because we had more guys out with injury than anyone. Not all are back and some that are coming back might not be 100% but they still have three significant places where the team improved it's personnel. FA, draft and injured players.
Brandon Spikes
SoZKillA : 5/6/2015 11:35 am : link
Is also a FA, I wouldn't be against bringing him in for a shot
It's all about injuries
George : 5/6/2015 11:44 am : link
If we can remain healthy on the OL, DB and at QB we can make some noise. But we have no depth whatsoever at any of those positions, and if our snake-bit history continues then we will be in deep shit.
Biggest Upgrade
ZGiants98 : 5/6/2015 11:47 am : link
Fewell to Spags.
some of the positions should
giants#1 : 5/6/2015 11:49 am : link
improve as the young players progress, namely Hankins, Donnell, and Kennard. Especially Donnell who was green as can be entering last year. And yes, it's even possible for Beckham to develop more...

On the flip side, they don't have a ton of older starters that are likely losing a step (ala 2014 Rolle). The main guys to watch here are Beason (and McClain after Beason stubs a toe), Beatty, Schwartz. Jenkins, and maybe Jennings. Though Jenkins/Jennings have obvious replacements ready to step in that could be significant improvements (Ellis/Bromley & Williams/Vereen).
Even with an extra loss, last season was a huge improvement from 2013
Eli's Got This Stuff : 5/6/2015 11:49 am : link
Only problem they delayed rebuilding the D after appearing to be good because of what I think were anomalies (scheduling, beason, hill, a completely inept offense)

If they can successfully rebuild the unit under Spags and improve in some capacity from last year (stop the damn run for starters) I see the D playing much better than last year.

I expect continued strides forward in the offense. The run game will return this year if the OL stats healthy and gels. The o could be very good this year

And I expect special teams to be vastly improved

I think this team should compete for a playoff spot and barring health and development could make a deep playoff run
McBride is absolutely
ZGiants98 : 5/6/2015 11:54 am : link
the third slot corner.

Bennett and Hosley are like the 4th and 5th corners. I dont think that it too terrible and it is surely an upgrade if Prince is back.

Also our special teams have been addressed in a major way. Should see a MASSIVE improvement there.
If the O-line can improve
rocco8112 : 5/6/2015 11:54 am : link
and bring some of that power run game I think the team will look good on O.

I especially love bringing in Vereen. I think this will have a larger impact on the offense than people expect. One he will pass protect well, two the Giants will finally do the check-down dump off or swing pass where the RB has YAC ability to do damage. The whole damn NFL is doing this and it helps move the chains and pad QB stats.

Cruz X-fcactor, if Cruz is anything like himself hen this offense can really soar. I also am going to take an optimistic view of Randle. I have been down on him but I think the light bulb may have gone on the end of last season. With a tilt the field like player in Beckham, the passing game should produce.

Defense is where this season will be decided. I actually have no idea how the defense will perform. I hope that is shows some signs of improvement and trending in the right direction. If the Giants have a capable defensive unit that can make some plays, hold some leads and God-forbid steal a game then the Giants will be a playoff contender.

If the line can keep Eli
ZGiants98 : 5/6/2015 12:08 pm : link
upright and give our backs some running room, our offense will be good. Its the same thing its always been. IMO, our line has been a mess the past couple of seasons and that is almost entirely the reason for our record.

Is the return of Cruz, the defense, ect all important? Of course it is but it is far far far down the totem pole compared to simply keeping Eli upright and giving him a chance to run this offense.

We've seen Eli turn absolute no-names in to players time and time again. If he has time, he will find an open receiver whether it's Victor Cruz or Preston Parker.
Concerns.
chiefmps : 5/6/2015 12:35 pm : link
The Giants decided not to address the need for a DT to help with the there bottom feeding worse run defense, this will effect the pass defensive since the secondary are going to have to be pulled in more to defend the run. This secondary is paper thin as it is now, it's just a matter of time before the Giants lose Amukamara or Cromartie for the season because of what they are being asked to do. As for the FS spot, the Giants chose not to sign or draft a player that can be look at as a starter, let face that facts, there is no FS on this Giants team that will be a starter on any other team. The secondary is a nightmare waiting to happen and the worse part is that this nightmare will happen. I see a team that should do better with this offensive but will need to score at least 25 or more points a game in order to win. With this defensive as it is, still looking at a top ten pick next year.
You forgot two other key positions....
giantgiantfan : 5/6/2015 1:09 pm : link
OC - Better by virtue of him and his players having a year under their belt.
DC - Better cause its fn Spags.
great points
Pep22 : 5/6/2015 1:43 pm : link
by you guys on the coordinators, STs
one of the things I love about Vereen
viggie : 5/6/2015 1:43 pm : link
is he is a GREAT blitz pickup guy on 3rd downs also, with the ability to leak out as the hot route. Should give Eli alot more time with the improved Oline to take some more deep chances.

Replacing Hosley?????
WillieYoung : 5/6/2015 2:01 pm : link
He played 6 games all year and was inactive for the entire month of December. If McBride stays healthy we are much improved at nickel corner.
I'm not going to pencil
mrvax : 5/6/2015 2:21 pm : link
in Flowers at ROT. How does anyone know if he can unseat Pugh? Or Pugh play guard fairly well? Besides, since Flowers is a bit raw, it may benefit him to spend a year at LG.

He has to beat Pugh to take over at ROT and that's the way it should be. So, I think we can consider the LG spot an upgrade (huge gain in the run blocking) and the ROT spot an upgrade if Pugh is healthier than last year.
chiefmps, don't you get tired of posting the same thing over and over?
Klaatu : 5/6/2015 3:04 pm : link
And over? And over? And over?

The Giants signed Kendrick Ellis primarily as a run-stopper. He may start next to Hankins, which is a lot of beef up front. They drafted Landon Collins because there's more than one way to stop the run. And they drafted Double O because he's a beast against the run.

So, you didn't get Danny Shelton. Cry me a river...I didn't get DeVante Parker.
McBride can play slot corner and
Simms11 : 5/6/2015 3:12 pm : link
had played it well. Additionally, specials should be better too, with injection of better gunners and tacklers, as well as Harris and possibly Hunt as returners.
Loved Rolle but he was awful
ZGiants98 : 5/6/2015 3:24 pm : link
last year. And Stevie Brown? Yikes.

Landon Collins and my 93 year old grandmother is an improvement over those two.
I don't like the fact that
Gman11 : 5/6/2015 4:41 pm : link
they tried to upgrade the linebacking corp by signing other teams' scrubs. Other than that I think the defense could be better just because of the Spags hire. If he finds a way to generate a pass rush it will help mask deficiencies at safety.

Agreed. Mike Harris is better than Hosley. He should be the backup slot corner behind McBride...really hoping Hosley is off the roster this year (I actually think the only thing saving him from being off the roster last year was his 4 game suspension - bought him some time for some guys to get hurt).

Chykie Brown may learn some safety as well but with the addition of Collins and Thompson, he's on the depth chart as the 4th corner. Not sure if we'll keep 5 or 6...we have Harris, Hosley, Gordy, Jackson, and Fenner competing for 1-2 spots. Gordy and Jackson could also figure into the 4th or 5th safety battle depending on how many we keep there.
Everyone's assuming that Flowers is the starting rt.
Ira : 5/7/2015 12:29 pm : link
If he doesn't look good in camp, they might decide to keep Pugh there and let Flowers compete with Jones at lg.
