Post-Draft Thoughts on the NFC East...What Say You?

NY Giants
Dallas Cowboys
Philadelphia Eagles
Washington Redskins

It's early. We know very little yet about FAs and draft picks for all teams. But what are your early thoughts on the competition and the division as a whole?

I still think

and I think this strongly -- that the Giants improved themselves -- but so did the rest of the teams in the division -- the NFCE is going to be a tough division to win
Here's my more cerebral rant
Arkbach : 5/7/2015 7:54 pm : link
Okay.
Cowboys have a line that will pound you into the dirt. I'm not close to being an OC at any level, but my feel is you throw and throw. Let the cowboys play Madden football with you. Create new passing formations. Don't run and try to control the game. Make the cowboys match touchdowns. Giants should be able to pass protect and run enough to keep the LBs honest. Throw deep and often and make them play a fast paced aerial game. That's my feel TODAY on our best shot.
Giants potentially improved themselves a great deal
Greg from LI : 5/7/2015 8:00 pm : link
If Odi is healthy, he's a total steal.
and I should have stayed on subject
Arkbach : 5/7/2015 8:02 pm : link
by stating the eagles may be able to match dallas TD-to-TD if they play the aerial game I'm thinking. Skins, nothing. So, if NYG and Phil can be pass-happy against dallas; maybe.
Very hard to say
SGMen : 5/7/2015 8:12 pm : link
I still think we need to get healthy (Ayers, Beason, Cruz, Prince); stay healthy (we were at the top of the league worst chart in terms of man games lost due to injury); and, pray the youth develops (TE Robinson, FS C. Taylor, LB D. Kennard, DT J. Bromley, RB Williams, WR C. Washington (goal line), OC B. Jones (could surprise in camp due to CFL experience and good head), and nickel safety N. Behre.

I honestly believe if this offense stays healthy and the youth develops we will score on most anyone. The OL should be much improved with Richburg at OC, Shwarz returning at OG and regardless of what people say Pugh back at RT and better / healthier.

The defense has improved speed as do the special teams. I do believe we'll struggle on defense especially early.

We need to get "lucky" and finally beat Dallas opening day and than go home and knock of ATL followed by the Skins. A 3-0 start for a new defense would be just awesome.

Eagles - I don't think they improved on offense at all.
Cowboys - Their offense should be very, very good and their defense should be improved. Best team in division until proven otherwise.
Redskins - I think Griffin will be better and overall they will be better.

The NFC East is a better overall division but I think most prognosticators may pick us to finish 3rd or 4th.
What I say?
Headhunter : 5/7/2015 8:13 pm : link
In January the Giants were a decimated team that played hard for TC. I think from everything I've read Cruz, Prince, Pugh, Schwartz, DRC Jennings McBride, Beason should be close to 100 percent healthy. We have Spags and do not have Fewell. We signed Harris & Vereen giving us a ST upgrade and the 3rd down back that the new offensive didn't have. We signed big body OL & DL FA's 2 LB's that are ST upgrade & depth to replace Paysinger & Williams. Our first 3 draft choices are going to bring talent and toughness the other 3 picks are interesting. Bottom line this team barring injuries will be much more talented than the team that limped off the field in January

Eric from BBI : Admin : 5/7/2015 8:13 pm : link
I have no idea what to make of Philadelphia. A team going through that many changes, and a coach who has hurt his reputation in the locker room. That would suggest a step back. But who knows with the way Kelly operates?

With Dallas, much depends on Romo's back and their defense. The defense played pretty well in spots last year despite losing their best defender (who now returns).

Skins QB situation is really up in the air.
Dallas has been pretty
Dave in N.Westchester : 5/7/2015 8:23 pm : link
Healthy on offense for awhile now let's see how it plays out. The main reason to draft Collins was to play keep away from Dallas. Someone has to know he would have "liked" to play for Dallas beforehand. Now their OL is going to be a royal pain in the ass for the next 3 years (Eli's best remaining years). Bad move on Reese's part
It's the year to year CHANGE that counts
KeoweeFan : 5/7/2015 8:32 pm : link
The only frame of reference is last year.
Dallas had a great OL last year. Insert a rookie (no matter his potential), and they will still have a great OL. (A different answer maybe if you were to ask about 3 years from now).
Giants clearly upgraded their OL from last year - especially re the run game; special teams (both sides - including Harris and the rookies), safety, LBs who can cover the flats and of course 3rd down options with Vereen. WRs are much better with a healthy Cruz and OBJ. (I think Davis will be a surprise possession receiver - but I'm not factoring him in. Maybe Randle will mature.)
Re coaches, McAdoo's scheme will be more mature and Spags (IMO) will hit the ground running as contrasted to his first stint where he need a few games for the players to buy in. On the other hand the jury is still out on whether Chip Kelly is helping or hurting Eagle's focus in year 2.
The Redskins are the Redskins.
My rose colored glasses have been rented until game 3.

I believe Reese "tried" to lure Collins but couldn't. 32 teams didn't bite on Collins during the draft, not just us. At the end of the day you play with the cards you are dealt. We are an improved team this year as compared to years past. We just have to hope we get healthy, stay healthy and develop our youth.

As long as Eli & Beckham stay healthy all year on offense and JPP & Cromartie stay healthy on defense we'll survive. Injuries happen.
We're playing catchup

And I'm tired of losing to Dallas and Philly.

Unless we get some very pleasant surprises, Dallas roster has a lot more talent and will be tough to beat.

Philly and Washington are more question marks.

On the positive side, we have many of the qualities in place which should give us hope. We have a franchise QB coming off one of his best years in the pros. I have more confidence in our two coordinators than I have at any point in the TC era. We have a young bonified superstar in ODB. At least one huge weakness, our running game, could conceivably be significantly improved with changes on OLine and addition of Vareen. We have potentially upgraded three area of weakness with our draft.

This team should be fighting for a wildcard.

The thing the Giants have in their favor
BillT : 5/7/2015 8:42 pm : link
As others have said, is that the team we have seen over the past couple of years isn't the team the Giants have assembled. Why? Of course, injuries.

The Giants, who have had good FA pickups and good drafts, also have good players coming back from injuries. Far more so than the other teams in the division.

So we'll see. I don't see any other team that I think is man-for-man more talented. They're pretty good, too. I think we have the best QB and better balance on defense and offense than the rest of the division.

If we're the most injured team again we'll go 6-10, again. Healthy we'll compete for the division title.

unimpressed with the Eagles offseason. Dallas has made some moves that look pretty scary in paper. But we'll see. I was scared the year the Eagles drafted Winston justice and Max-Jean Gilles. How'd that turn out. Washington made some good picks but they'll still blow.

is our biggest competition. That OL could be impenetrable. But they could easily be their own worst enemy. Hardy. Gregory. Bryant. Any one or all could blow up. Romo also has a chronically balky back, but he may not get hit at all behind that OL.

Don't like what the Eagles did. Kelly's moves decimated the team, and left him with Sam Bradford at QB. A guy who has blown out his knee twice. Kelly also alienated half the remaining players by making it clear he was willing to trade any or all of them for an unproven rookie QB. The Eagles also had to draft three CBs.

The Redskins still have the drama that is RGIII at QB. Fans will be quick to call for Cousins or McCoy as soon as he makes a mistake. I like Preston Smith, but he was a 4-3 DE in college. The Redskins play a 3-4. The rest of their draft was blah.

I think it's us or the Cowboys, with the edge to Dallas because of that OL. We may be able to beat them, but they may be more likely to beat themselves.
I think the NFC East has gotten better.....

Dallas has been the team to beat. The news today just enhances their position. But The bigger they are......the further they will fall.......

But if we stay healthy.....we can and will compete.

to the Cowboys worries more than Collins. If he gets it right mentally he could be a real playmaker on D. The OL ain't gonna get much better because it was already so good. The D however looked prime for a step back this year, Gregory along with the first round CB could solidify things.

Man still hard to believe that JPP and Prince are elders of that locker room on defense. Seems like not too long ago JPP was dumping him in an ice tub. Ah memories.

Gmen4Life21 : 5/7/2015 11:13 pm : link
Dallas is the favorite. I don't like the Eagles FA period at all, still I wouldn't write them off. I do think they will hang around, which means they have a chance to win the division as there isn't a dominant team in the NFC East. I like the top 2 picks of their draft. The Giants too should be in the mix, I think have a strong chance to win the division just need a few things to break right including health.

How I'd rank them as far as favorites would be DAL/NYG/PHI/WAS, but I think the division should be tight as it usually is (2-3 teams competing for the division). Giants offense should be very, very good. It's up to the defense, the run defense certainly should be improved based on the moves made. Just need the pass rush and coverage to be better too, health may be the biggest factor considering who was injured last year.

Cowboys got better
RAIN : 5/8/2015 12:28 am : link
Collins, Byron Jones, and Randy Gregory.

Gregory, has some serious issues.. apparently he doesn't listen to coaching, in addition to other issues. He's a gamble long term.

Collins is the guy that I didn't want them to get. I'd feel better about our matchup with them if we find another DT. Well see if Hankins and Jenkins/Ellis/Bromley will be enough. Our speed getting better at LB, along with some better athletes on the edge .. bode well on third down.

Eagles had an interesting off-season. If Bradford stays healthy, they will be dangerous.

Skins.. had a good draft. Scherff and Kouandijo are people movers.

We had a good .. meat and potatoes draft. Can't argue with our 2nd and 3rd round.. Flowers has some work to do.. but he's a great piece of clay to work with. Our Oline will finally be a strength. Vereen was a great pickup and foil to Jennings. Our defense, especially with JT thomas, Collins, and the Odiggles has gotten faster.

I like how were rebuilding.. but we need our youth in years 2 and 3 to really step up.
On paper, Dallas looks like the class of the division
SanFranNowNCGiantsFan : 5/8/2015 6:51 am : link
But the games aren't played on paper. Also, I think that's a circus that could just implode.

I have no idea what to make of the Eagles.

Redskins don't scare me.

I think Giants can win 9+ games, provided good health. And I think we're due for some good health.
Our offseason has been solid
Rjanyg : 5/8/2015 7:51 am : link
Free agency brought 2 new OL, 2 DL, 2 LB, 1 RB and 1 WR. Most of those will help with depth and specials while I believe JT Thomas has a good shot to take over the WLB position. Vereen will help move the chains.

The draft kicked ass. Flowers was my favorite choice for a tackle, Collins is a plug and play Safety and Oh Diggy is going to be a stud. All 3 picks represent great value, youth plus upside. This draft will resemble the production of the 2005 IMO. The next 3 picks are ok in my mind, I'm most intrigued by the Bob Hart pick. Kid is huge, played in a big program and I believe he started 4 years there at FSU. Everyone is freaking out about La El Collins signing in Dallas and we should have draft him instead of Hart, but I think this kid sticks.

Dallas did well but they Took a step back in the RB position. McFadden is not the runner that Murray is and I think it will effect their whole offensive approach. There draft was ok, I think Gregory was a solid pick and he is a better player than Byron Jones right now.

Philly lost a ton of talent this offseason. I didn't love their draft and I think they will take a big step back this year.

Washington had a good draft. Still can't believe they took Scherff over Williams though. Still a question at WR.

So, all in all, I think our weaknesses were addressed along with our depth. The 53 man roster looks pretty easy to pick right now. We have done enough to compete now it's time to get racy to win the NFC East.
anything can happen (obviously)
aquidneck : 5/8/2015 8:05 am : link
A scenario for every team being the best can be imagined.

Cowboys lead with a hammer of an OL, a franchise QB and game breaking WR, but lost their record setting RB and are hoping for someone to emerge while looking to replace him by committee. I like their youth on D.

Philadelphia is in such flux that they're pretty much impossible to project. Could see anything from 4-12 to 12-4 from them, but I'm guessing odds are more in favor of the losing records than the winning ones.

Don't think the R******s can be winners unless it's with RG at QB and don't have faith in him to stay healthy or be a consistently good teammate. IMO he still needs to mature. Don't know if his body will hold up while that happens.

Giants are thin at OL compared to Cowboys, probably as good as league average otherwise. I'm ok with giving Donnell and Robinson another year to mature. I like our RBs. Giants have a proven franchise QB, but offense will be dependent on health of Cruz to be truely dynamic.

We've got JPP and 5 role player types at DE. That's enough probably. 6 legitimate bodies to consider at DE. Still counting on Jenkins and hoping for more from Ellis than he gave the Jets at DT apparently.

Our LBing will be fine if Beason stays healthy. Unfortunately we need a big, big contribution from him in order to ensure that. The group will once again be below average talent wise without him roaming sideline to sideline blowing up running plays. Chances of that happening? Probably < 50%.

I like the youth at S, but think they might yet augment it with a middling vet with savvy. Don't like our depth at CB. Whose the next guy after McBride? Giants are still counting on Hosely competing at training camp?

Quinn's STs have been given a massive talent infusion. They need to perform in all phases as an above average unit this season. I think they can do it.

Giants
Cowboys
Eagles
R******s

I think overall we did very well
USAF NYG Fan : 5/8/2015 8:16 am : link
I'm hoping someone can step up as a viable backup on the OL because I think it's still an injury away from being a problem still. I think we focused almost entirely on the run game for both sides of the ball. Our secondary focus was on ST. We took Harris from Dallas (gunner/returner) and almost everyone else we picked (except Flowers) look like ST contributors. Still stuck with Quinn though.

Don't be so quick to count out Philly. Chip may have lost some cred with his players but his system has been working. Hopefully Spags has an answer for that offense.

Redskins, I've got nothing to add.

Cowboys seemed to focus on the defense I thought. Until Collins, I didn't see any improvement in their offense. I'm not sure we can even say Collins is an improvement yet. They already had the best OL. I no longer fear their RB. True that OL can make most RBs look good but not Murray good. Who's gonna return kicks/punts for them now? I check in on NFC East rival forums and that same question was asked on CowboysZone with nobody offering any good answers.
Wow...
Tony in Tampa : 5/8/2015 8:22 am : link
Sure sounds like a lot of folks on this thread have on their rose colored glasses. A nice top three draft class and fairly mediocre free agent signings will probably not push this team up from 3rd place. Sorry to be negative but I see an 8-8 team at best.
If we don't repeat last season's injury rate,
RC02XX : 5/8/2015 8:22 am : link
I think we will be contending for the division. And I'm not too sure that even with their strong offensive line and QB play, the Cowboys will feel the departure of Murray more than people are stating. And their defense is still not too great, no matter their #1 draft pick.

I don't know what to make of the Eagles since their QB situation is so fluid. Can Bradford or anyone else on their roster really run Chip's offense better than it had run the past two seasons?

And the Redskins are Redskins. Will RGIII finally not suck?
I feel lkike I do most other times about the Giants,

the rest of the division, and the NFL in general.

Lots of good signings and the appearance of some quality draft picks.

Injuries - and the ability to avoid them - will, once again, rule for all teams.
We competed with Dallas last year
RollBlue : 5/8/2015 9:33 am : link
the first one in Dallas was close, the second one at home the Giants should have won. In addition to the injuries, two potentially huge coaching changes. One is Spags - he will go after Romo. Two is Callahan, who is widely considered the best OL coach in the business, and a good offensive mind. He is no longer with the Cowboys. If they can avoid the major injury bug, the Giants will compete for the division.
Giants were an 8-9 win team in 2014, if the injuries
JonC : 5/8/2015 10:47 am : link
hadn't piled up, yet again.

NYG added a cornerstone tackle, the OL has more talent, unit will need to gel. Defense added a number of talents in Collins, Odi, Ellis, and speed upgrades at OLB.

Spags bringing some ability to properly scheme, TEACH, and COMMUNICATE with his players could be an extra win or two over the course of a season.

Stay healthy, NYG has the talent to win 10 games and compete within the NFCE.
I'm happy

you really think the NFC East will be a tough division to win? Is that because you think it's overall a good division or is it because all the teams are all evenly matched?

Last year Sagarin (USA Today) had the NFC East as the 6th worst, out of 8 divisions. That seems right to me.

And I'm not sure as a division it has improved measurably.
As of right now
illmatic : 5/8/2015 12:08 pm : link
I think it's Cowboys/Giants/Redskins/Eagles in that order. I also don't think any of the teams will be terrible like the Redskins were last year. They'll all beat up on each other.

The Redskins improve a bit but probably finish at 6 or 7 wins or so. Probably similar to how the Giants played the past few years.

I think there's too much going on in Philly and their QBs aren't really good enough.

The Cowboys are still in the driver's seat. Their defense may not be that great but they're getting Lee back and their offense will always keep them in games regardless. I could rush for a 1000 yards behind that line.

And I think the Giants an average team at worst but they have the talent to win 9 or 10 games. They'll get Cruz back and hopefully he works his way even somewhat close to his usual self. They improved the OL a bit, they added depth to the DL, depth at LB and special teams should be much better as well. The main questions for the Giants with me are who steps up at safety, how Cruz looks, the tight ends and if there are any growing pains at defense with switching to Spags. And how long it takes them to get settled in there. All of this for every team is assuming they stay healthy though.
