For old school Giant fans (like me)

LadyGiant : 5/13/2015 12:01 pm
I've been searching on YouTube for old Giant game films that might be posted and found this treasure. Many of you long time, long-suffering, Giant fans like me remember not to fondly the dark ages of the 70s in Giant fandom. But, one of the bright spots in the otherwise dismal decade was the '72 season, especially the game with the Giants shellacked the Eagles 62 - 10. I especially remember this game because I had to listen to Jim Gordon and Dick Lynch on a tiny transistor radio held up at my bedroom window due to the NFL rule of blacking out the home games.
Anyway, I'm sure one of the Giant historians that post on the site might've found this somewhere and posted it already, but here it is. I found it on a YouTube channel that belongs to Jim Files, who played linebacker on that team. The highlight film tells of a lot of things, mentioning the trade with Minnesota and reminding me that it was 1972 that was the rookie year for John Mendenhall... Who I remember as a defensive line beast.

I was at the 62-10 Giants win against the Eagles. My first ever game. Great memories.
What a great find, thanks for sharing!

He also has the 1970 highlights video posted - which features a great 4th-quarter comeback against Washington and also the very first Giants-Jets regular season game.

These old NFL Films productions are magnificent.

He was one of the few shining lights on a crappy team.
Files was a terrific LB..

I forgot all about him.....A Rocky Freakin' Thompson sighting....1972 was suppose to be a positive stepping stone for the Giants....turned out to be the "tease" of the decade.....it would be 9 long seasons before this team would have a winning record again.....

Truly a decade of futility....
That was fun to watch

You can't talk about the suffering 70s without mentioning Brad Van Pelt, one of the few bright spots as well
as a kid loved Jim Files..

ebay about 10 years ago that had every giants team highlight from 1970-1981 all on one vhs tape .One of my most treasured pieces of my collection .Its too bad most of the early 70's games are not available anywhere between the tape collectors .1977 is the first year where most games are available anything before that expect for a few games are impossible to get
Thank you for this

I was at every home game that year as a 17 year old vendor. The reason I worked at Yankee Stadium was to get to see the Giants. This film brought back so many memories. Thanks again.
great find

Thanks for link.
I don't remember that Files was a "terrific" linebacker

Not ProBowl material but solid and reliable. He was one of my favorites too.

As LadyGiant reports, I'm pleased that Jim Files is still around.

After that season, the Giants "fell off the wagon" again.

Yeah...Bob Tucker, Spider Lockhart, Jack Gregory, John Mendenhall, Brad Van Pelt,... That defense was fun to watch, especially for a 12-year-old girl and her dad. We used to hate when it was time for the offense to go on the field because we were sure they were going to give up the ball, especially in those awful years that followed this campaign. I remember after one particularly disappointing loss; ever the idealist and optimist saying to my father one day they'll get to the Super Bowl. Sadly, my dad passed away in early 1980 of a self-inflicted gunshot wound and never got to see the glory years of the 80s.

I grew up in Bridgeport CT and I remember clearly that the home games when they were not sold out we are indeed blacked out. And living in Bridgeport, the CBS affiliate in Connecticut was up in Hartford and could barely be seen

..remember that game on the radio because it was blacked out. In 1973 they started to show home games when home games were sold out. It was not Jim Gordon and Dick Lynch. It was Marty Glickman and Dick Lynch doing the game. The Giants were OK that year but could not beat any of the really good NFL teams so they ended up 8-6.
The linebackers were a bright spot

Thanks for correcting me… My memory is always the Jim Gordon and Dick Lynch broadcasts in later years... Jim Gordon's voice was memorable...it was always a great day for football, whatever the weather. :-)

great memories. Thanks for the find. Ron Johnson, Bob Tucker, and the rest of that team are forever ingrained in my mind. I was 12 years old as well. My parents bought a football game. APBA football. Does anyone remember it? I had the 1972 season and played it for hours. I would keep statistics for each game. I still have the game cards and notebooks. In the 1990s I bought the computer version of it for that year and led the Giants to a Super Bowl victory.
Thanks -That Was Awesome to See

Joe Tafoni..
Those names bring back great memories.. I have both their autographs and they both lived within blocks of my house. Remember playing football with them at my local park.
Plus that first game vs Dallas is the game I got an actual game ball. Still have it on display today.

Absolutely! :-). Except in the mid- to -late 80s it became a dangerous place at night. It was that time the Lafayette Plaza Mall was really becoming rather empty, with most of the shops moving out because of the increased crime rate. I preferred going to the Trumbull Mall if you remember that one.
