Justin Tuck's career #'s

Andy in Boston : 5/14/2015 2:16 pm
He's had a really good career.
He'll eclipse 500 career tackles this year and has 65.5 career sacks. 2 rings and a few pro bowls.

Would be curious to know how many D-lineman in the history of the NFL have had 500 + tackles and 70 career sacks. I'm willing to bet not as many as one might think.

Considering Sacks only became an official stat in 1982....
figgy2989 : 5/14/2015 2:19 pm : link
I bet there are a lot more guys who would have eclipsed that number from back in the day.

Still a solid career for Tuck.
Fuck that no good mother fuckin
Taggart : 5/14/2015 2:26 pm : link
asshole Flozell Adams. Fuckin piece of shit.
Tuck may have been the best player on the field in two Super Bowls.
Big Blue Blogger : 5/14/2015 2:28 pm : link
When healthy, he was a genuinely dominant two-way DE, very close to Strahan's level. The biggest difference between the two was Strahan's durability/consistency (though he had his ups and downs too). Stats only tell a small part of how good Tuck really was when on his game. He just wasn't there very often, or for very long.

FWIW, six of the top 100 sackers are primarily associated with the Giants: Strahan, Taylor, Marshall, Umenyiora, Tuck and Hamilton.

um eli manning, cruz or JPP in 2011…tuck was clearly the best defensive player in 2007
It's often surprising to me every time I hear that Tuck still hasn't
Ten Ton Hammer : 5/14/2015 2:36 pm : link
caught Osi in career sacks.

Tuck is fondly regarded, but I feel like Osi has gone a bit forgotten.

435 tackles, 85 career sacks. Still an active player.
I'll always remember when I knew he was going to be special...
Britt in VA : 5/14/2015 2:39 pm : link
We were getting blown out by the Chargers in 2005, and Tuck ran down Tomlinson from behind to prevent a 90 yard TD run.

He had a slight angle, but it was mainly that he was able to run him down from behind.
Tuck's neck issues were up there with the shoulder
JonC : 5/14/2015 2:49 pm : link
Osi complained too much, slacked off versus the run too often. Knowledgeable fans will remember him fondly, but won't forget those key negatives either, imv.
Osi was a one trick pony. It was a glorius trick. but he was...
Britt in VA : 5/14/2015 2:50 pm : link
one dimensional.

Tuck was a football player.
Not sure I would go so far as to say he wasn't a football player
Ten Ton Hammer : 5/14/2015 2:54 pm : link
Not many people stay in the league 10+ years and approach 100 sack territory. I think we can move past the idea he was a gimmick player.
I wouldn't call it a gimmick.
Britt in VA : 5/14/2015 2:56 pm : link
He was a pass rusher. A specialist is what I would call it.

However, IMO, that's all he was good at. There's nothing wrong with that, but it is what it is.
before his knee injury, I think Osi was a decent run defender
Greg from LI : 5/14/2015 3:00 pm : link
Not great, but hardly a liability. After 2008, he really sold out to beat the OT to the outside because he had lost a step, which degraded his run defense significantly.
The most interesting thing about watching the 1972 Giants....
Emlen'sGremlins : 5/14/2015 3:02 pm : link
....highlight film on youtube the other day was when Frank Gifford stated that Jack Gregory had 22 sacks for the season.
Tuck was definitely better than Osi
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 5/14/2015 3:02 pm : link
But never forget Osi beating Walter Jones twice at a time when Walter Jones didn't get beat. Osi was a bad man when it came to rushing the passer and stripping the QB. His run D stunk in comparison to Tuck's though.
oh man, his performance in that 2005 Seahawks game was
Greg from LI : 5/14/2015 3:11 pm : link
absolutely incredible. Like you said, in those days Walter Jones was damned near unbeatable, and Osi owned him that day.
Wow totally forgot about Adams dirty play
est1986 : 5/14/2015 3:12 pm : link
It actually may have had a long term effect on his career, you never know, he did have injury concerns prior to being drafted, he will be in the Giants ring of honor one day, he deserves it.
Osi also missed an entire season
est1986 : 5/14/2015 3:15 pm : link
During a time in which he was playing his best football. Could have easily had 10 to 15 sacks that year
Eh, 65 sacks isn't that impressive...
Dan in the Springs : 5/14/2015 3:18 pm : link
that's what, 2 sacks a year for 33 years?

C'mon man, surely there's been lots of guys who can average those kind of numbers. You'd only need to register a sack a game for every 8 games you play, and keep that rate up for around 520 games or so.

Oh yeah, and just make sure to stay healthy for that many games also.

65 sacks = over-rated.

I don't think Tuck ever performed like Strahan for any type of sustained stretch.
Osi was a game changer
Old Dirty Beckham : 5/14/2015 3:28 pm : link
Tuck was a down to down player. Both great Giants. Glad we had them both. Without either we don't win 2 SBs.
Greg: I agree that the pre-injury Umenyiora was better vs. the run.
Big Blue Blogger : 5/14/2015 4:28 pm : link
I might disagree about which injury. I think the hip in 2006 affected him permanently. After that, I think he played a bit lighter, and appeared to sell out more to get upfield. I'm not sure the staff discouraged that. When you have a DE who can turn the corner like Osi could, the plays he makes are worth giving up some ten-yard runs.
ODB: Agreed - Tuck didn't sustain it for long.
Big Blue Blogger : 5/14/2015 4:30 pm : link
But in the two biggest games of his life, he was about as good as a defensive end can be.
My co-worker is a '9er fan
Annunaki : 5/14/2015 6:49 pm : link
and we where just talking about DLinemen #'s. Justin Smith has 900 tackles and 90 sacks. Which is damn impressive. I didn't realize he had such good #'s. Seeing Tucks #'s makes Smiths even more impressive.
Yea Osi could play the run earlier in his career
GMenLTS : 5/14/2015 7:14 pm : link
for some reason he just said fuck it after he came back from injury.

Thanks for that reminder about the walter jones game, Osi. He manhandled an otherwise completely unstoppable force.

Of course that game will always be remembered most for this:

I was so pissed off after that game. The Giants beat the Seahawks up & down the field and shit-for-brains Feely set a record for 4th quarter field goals...missed with 3!

Joe Jurevicius, who never did much for the Giants had his career game that day.

Osi with 2 sacks, 7 tackles and 1 forced fumble. Tuck made an appearance but was wet behind the ears.
85 career sacks for Osi,
SHO'NUFF : 5/14/2015 8:17 pm : link
but 80 of them happened against Winston Justice...

...in one game.

And a bunch of Tuck's sacks are against Guards and Centers, not tackles. We don't have to get into the game of taking accomplishments away from Giants.

That was some game. A few years before, Strahan made a damn good tackle his personal bitch in John Runyan. Runyan was actually allowed to hold Strahan on almost every play and never get called on it!

made me appreciate Strahans so much more.
I loved when the Giants picked him.
St. Jimmy : 5/14/2015 9:12 pm : link
The pick was in within 30 seconds of getting on the clock. You just knew they were getting a good player.
Thought Tuck's greatest season was 2008,

when he didn't have Osi and Strahan.....

Had Strahan not had his back issues, he'd have been all decade 1990's and 2000's - no one could run on him with consistent success which made it a whole lot easier for everyone else. He could also beat double teams in the pass rush. How many guys in today's NFL can do that? NONE...except for the guy from Houston!!!!
Tuck
mdthedream : 5/15/2015 6:43 am : link
could play inside and out. Osi was a speed passrusher that went wide to many times on running plays. I would say Osi made bigger game changing plays because he caused turnovers.
If I remember correctly
OBJ_AllDay : 5/15/2015 2:06 pm : link
Tuck had 10 sacks in 2007!as a rotational lineman. Those saying he never played like strahan are wrong.

Tuck frequently played hurt too. It may have slowed him down and affected his numbers that all you fantasy douche lords jack off to but he was tough. He ability to ply inside was so sunderrated and I wish the Giants just made him a full time DT instead of letting him walk. He playedd out of his miind in both super bowls. Absolute stud. All Time Giant.
Osi and TUck

will be part of the Giants Ring of Honor.

Hopefully JPP will as well.
