"Because of his experience [at Texas], he's played in the slot, he's played man-to-man in the slot on displaced receivers, he's also played on tight ends," Vaughn said in an interview with the Giants' website.

"But he's also played out wide in one-on-one coverage against wide receivers, so that always helped him versus athletic tight ends in the league, those guys are big receivers for the most part, so his experience in the slot and playing at corner at times should help him in the coverage aspect."

Can Giants safety Mykkele Thompson cover athletic tight ends? His college position coach thinks so - ( New Window )

"He's one of the best athletes I've coached, he can run, he can jump, got great [hip] transition for a tall guy, and again I think his best ball is ahead of him," Vaughn said. "His learning curve as far as learning and playing defense is really high."

That he has played safety, CB, and also the slot, but that we see him as a free safety. Initially I wondered if he would be a guy who could play CB in some situations since he has the experience and weight is about right, but I think he is probably too tall.
For some reason I keep thinking of Jacquian Williams

in the sense that he was one of the only other compeltely "off the board" picks I can recall to the point where most sites didn't even have him listed. Reese has certainly had his fair share of busts, but a lot of them were guys in the consensus top 200-300 players like Brewer, Mosely, Jones, Herman, Dillard, Petrus, etc. Will be interesting to see what Thompson looks like in preseason.

"The Giants' DVOA (Defense-adjusted Value Over Average, a metric that takes every single play during the NFL season and compares each one to a league-average baseline based on situation) against tight ends in 2014 was a miserable 13.9 percent, placing them 25th in the league, and their DVOA defending the middle of the field was 64 percent, placing them dead last in the NFL, per Football Outsiders."
They're probably correct about his ability to cover tight ends.

The question is that when they catch the ball, will he be able to tackle them. If he turns out to be even a solid player, there are going to be a lot of people who should eat crow on this pick.
I'm still not expecting much from this pick

At least not anytime soon.
It seemed likely long before the draft that the Giants would draft

two safeties and two offensive linemen.

5th and 7th round picks often don't pan out even if they are the "BPA," so the Giants didn't risk a whole lot by going for need.

If Thompson at 190 pounds can absorb the bruising of TEs and make tackles in run support, the Giants may have found a sleeper. IMO, the need for depth at safety was great enough to risk a 5th round pick.
Could his low flashy stats (INT's and pass breakups)

be the result of other teams' not throwing in his direction?

Not sure he will become much....

...but I can't criticize the pick because after the 4th round, there wasn't really much talent left. There will be a few in there that will surprise, there always are, but in 5 years when we look back on this draft we will see that the 5th, 6th and 7th rounds produced very few players in the league.
Reese loves those

kid halfway thru his SR year. whether it was the contacts or just getting in the zone at his position, it all came together and the Giants noticed

hopefully we got another gibril wilson find who nobody heard much about at tennessee

at least he is another big body for the slot - Spags has some atypical requirements for the slot position
Let's be realistic and careful assessing these new guys.

Too many draftees in the past have flopped when facing

real NFL competition. Let;s see if he will sink or swim in the summer games.
This could be a

very successful draft if we get someone like Thompson or Collins to cover TEs like Witten, for instance. Believe it when I see it.

I'll say it one more time: we really got killed last year because of FS Will Hill's poor decision to smoke. He was our only center-fielder. We also got killed with all the injuries in our secondary - W. Thurmond, P. Akumura and T. McBride. Had our secondary stayed healthy and drug free last year we'd have won at least 3 more games. Honest truth. Oh, also the injury to Schwarz hurt bad cause our interior OL was likely the league's worst overall.
