It's so good, it's so extreme, it's almost an art film, except the art is balls-to-the-wall action, production design, cinematography, editing... It really is one of the most remarkable films I've seen in a long time, and I see a lot of films.
It's hard to even describe the experience of watching it. "Balls-out insane" is a start.
Assume I know nothing about Mad Max history... will I still enjoy or will I miss out on stuff?

Everything you need to know is in this film. In fact, his origin story (presented in fragmentary flashbacks) is somewhat different from the original. Like it matters.
RE: The heart of the movie is an hour-long car chase Â
A lot of people will think its getting based strictly because of its achievement, but unlike gravity and boyhood (which get praise for what they pulled off) this a great freakin movie. Charlize Theron killed it
IMO. Like both, but Road Warrior is one of my favorite action and post-apocalyptic movies. I'm hearing nothing but this surpassing that and that makes me moist.
This was me in my seat when the screen faded to black Â
I wouldn't call the movie feminist, exactly. All the protagonists, except for Max and one other dude, are women and they engage in badassery, fight and die like the men do, which is nice to see.
I really haven't enjoyed a movie start to finish like that in a very long time. I wouldn't call it a feminist movie, or one that emasculating at all. It has some female protagonists who are just as badass as anyone else in the movie. Charlize was phenomenal. You just got the impression that so much care went into creating this detailed world. The cars, the weapons, the unique characters. So awesome.
"Plot, development, dialogue, intelligence, subtlety, suspense, wit, chemistry and logic get tossed out the window as screen irrelevant in Australian George Miller’s return after thirty years for a fourth milking of the franchise."

Wow, everybody's entitled to their opinion, but that review says more about the critic than the film. The film has wit and intelligence to spare. I could go on, but what's the point?
Maybe. Tom Hardy does a few too many Bane-style grunts for my taste. But it has been a helluva long time since "Beyond Thunderdome." I didn't miss Mel.

Exactly how I felt. I also see what you mean with the Bane-like grunts
audacious and imaginative action movie I have ever seen. It is almost unfair to compare it to Road Warrior, though that is obviously what most people would do. It is clearly from the same lineage, but it's different too.
The direction, the cinematography, the art direction and set design, the stunt work? This is world class filmmaking. Cynics should dismiss this at their own risk. The ballsiest movie I've seen in a long time, and even in the midst of unrelenting action, you never lose track of who is doing what to whom. It's really incredibly well made.
where the Happy Feet films. I still can't wrap my head around that.
Don't forget Babe. That is an incredibly made movie as well. Easily dismissed by some because it's talking animals, but just so well written and directed. He's a great filmmaker.
I'm not a big movie-goer and avoid a lot of action movies, Â
but holy crap was it amazing. Will probably see it again (in 3d again) just to take in one more time. Do pure action movies ever get nominated for awards? This one might deserve to get nominated.
Started watching the original Mad Max a bit ago but it was so dated and campy, I'm surprised I wasn't making fun of it with two wise cracking robots by my side.
We saw this last night and I'm still not sure what to say Â
I don't even think I understood more than 5 lines of dialogue as it was kind of muffled at times and their accents...but it's a masterpiece. I will watch this movie over and over again. Spectacular.
I don't even think I liked Hardy's performance unless he wasn't talking or grunting, which was enough to pacify...
The fucking guitarist leading the way!!lol... Love it...

I am clearly a different dude because it was far from a masterpiece.

I hate reading threads like this because they lead me to a similar conclusion as yours. I'm going to go see this and be like, ok, that was entertaining. But a masterpiece? These are some crazy ass statements. Hope I'm wrong!
the movie being good or not. I agree with DJM, thought it was stellar.
Read earlier today the Heath Ledger was supposed to be the new Mad Max prior to his death. I like Tom Hardy more, but it would have been interesting either way.
it's a masterpiece. it's as good as it gets in that particular genre. Masterpieces need to break new ground. This does.
I enjoyed the movie a lot.. but I'm inclined to say it's a bit overrated. At the end of the day it was just an awesome action flick to me without the substance of a heavy hitting drama.
Maybe that's my bad for having elevated expectations, but I had read there was some worthwhile social commentary from the film (mainly feminism). It really didn't pack that kind of punch for me. Again.. I thought it was a great time, but nothing more.

It is entirely your fault for going into it and expecting the substance of a heavy hitting drama. When you saw the Road Warrior, did you expect it to be like Schindler's List?

Here is the consensus paragraph from Rotten tomatoes, where the film has a 98%: With exhilarating action and a surprising amount of narrative heft, Mad Max: Fury Road brings George Miller's post-apocalyptic franchise roaring vigorously back to life.
Then I'm reading stories about how certain crazy folks are boycotting the film because it promotes feminism. So the great reviews and shit like that had me thinking the film would be more than awesome car chase... and it wasn't.
And forget wanting substance. There are plenty of action films that have virtually nothing to say, but I ultimately find myself caring about what happens to the characters (Batman among many I could name). As I watched this film I was enjoying myself, but at no point did I really care what happened to anyone.
To me, that's a huge missing element that totally removes the movie from any "Groundbreaking" conversation.

A few minutes of setup,
car chase car chase car chase,
pause,
car chase car chase car chase,
cars stop
end credits.

For the first time since inception I may go see a movie in theaters twice.

I typically don't like action movies. They usually substitute action and explosions for a story line, but this did a good job of not doing that.
I don't even think I understood more than 5 lines of dialogue as it was kind of muffled at times and their accents...but it's a masterpiece. I will watch this movie over and over again. Spectacular.
