NFT: Mad Max: Fury Road is balls-out insane

Gary from The East End : Admin : 5/15/2015 1:39 pm
Caught the first showing this morning with the missus. The film starts out crazy and just keeps on raising the stakes from beginning to end.

Small correction
Mike in Long Beach : 5/26/2015 12:35 pm : link
I don't think Batman had "nothing to say," I just meant that I cared about what happened to the characters.
not sure how you couldn't care
B in ALB : 5/26/2015 12:44 pm : link
even a little bit for the thousands of people basically being held captive by Immortan Joe or Furiosa or Max for that matter. It's not meant to be a heart warming story but it does have some elements of that. It's mainly meant to be kick ass sick action, violence and a hell of a lot of fun to watch.

Over-analyzing Mad Max and clamoring for some sort of overriding meaning is ridiculous.

I've NEVER seen anything like this film and I'm contemplating going back to see it again. That's good enough for me.

I think this sentence sort of speaks to the the crux of my sentiments.

I truly enjoyed the film. I'd recommend it to pretty much anyone. If there's a sequel, I'd see that, too. But I can't imagine I'd ever make a point to see this film again.
Did I miss something?
chris r : 5/26/2015 12:52 pm : link
I made it through about an hour and 10 minutes and then couldnt take anymore. Does the story pick up after that?

the movie and it was very well done, but some of you are acting like this is the best movie ever made.

I agree with Eric. It was a fun movie that I enjoyed. Worth the price of admission. My wife had never even seen any of the Mad Max movies with Mel Gibson but she really enjoyed it too. We both love Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron and they were great.

However, I wouldn't say it was insane and can't see watching it twice.
Saw it yesterday
GiantJake : 5/26/2015 1:00 pm : link
I really enjoyed it. Pretty much non-stop action.
IMO, best action move ever made
UConn4523 : 5/26/2015 1:02 pm : link
if you want an action movie, this is for you and should impress you unless you are just playing the contrarion. Miller used live stunts like in Road Warrior, something that only a handful of directors even both with anymore (and none to this scale). If that isn't impressive, then what is?

Chris R, your loss, it really picks up at 1 hour and 11 minutes...
bother

Fuck. Seriously I wanted to leave so many times but the rave reviews kept me around. It was unwatchable for me.

Not going to argue over movie tastes, but if this was unwatchable for you, i'd love to know the last few movies that you were able to sit through, and possibly even like.
the people
EricNY33 : 5/26/2015 1:26 pm : link
who are hyping up the car chase scenes in this movie remind me of the people who were talking up the pod racing scene in Phantom Menance. The car chases in Mad Max are ridiculously good and I enjoyed them, but there is nothing epic or groundbreaking about this movie.

A movie like this should give me story where I get emotionally invested in what happens, and as hard as it tried with the wives of Joe storyline and then Furiosa finding her old coven I never really cared much about that and I was constantly waiting for the next action sequence. It was kind of like a bad opera in the sense that it wants us to feel something but it never quite delivers on that.

I disagree. Go read up on how it was made and get back to me. If that's not good enough, then what would be? What other movie that has 90+ minute of action actually has said action in the quality of Fury Road? 90% of the action was in broad daylight which means GM couldn't hide a poor stunt, or throw extra dark editing in to mask an obvious weakness, instead of doing a full retake. For a movie to pull of action of this magnitude, while being fully fluid, is incredibly impressive.
and the Phantom Menace
UConn4523 : 5/26/2015 1:33 pm : link
was almost entirely CGI, so you also made my point for me.
In its genre, it is a masterpiece.
Eli's Got This Stuff : 5/26/2015 1:37 pm : link
Visually groundbreaking with the combination of practical stunts, cgi, and art direction.

For a movie that is a 2 hour car chase with little dialogue there is a surprising amount of narrative. I am not sure why anyone would be expecting heavy hitting drama and deep thought provoking ideas but behind the non-stop action was a creative sci-fi backdrop.

I don't know if this is a fair comparison but to me the movie that it most compares to for having groundbreaking jaw dropping special effects and action sequences is The Matrix

Gary from The East End : Admin : 5/26/2015 1:39 pm : link
I guess there's nothing so wonderful that some people won't like it.

I'm definitely going to see it again, though.
Phantom Menace is one of the first in a line of overly CGIed movies.
Eli's Got This Stuff : 5/26/2015 1:45 pm : link
The MCU is a another great example. For all the money Marvel has thrown into movie after movie the special effects look cheesy and you can spot it a mile away.

When a movie's draw is the special effects and they look cheesy and fake from a mile away the movie falls flat, which is what I would say happens to the overwhelming majority of big budget movies today.

I didn't say it wasn't impressive. In fact I said the action sequences were incredible. What I am saying is most people didn't like the Phantom Menance but talked up the Pod racing scene, and that's how a lot of you are selling Mad Max. You're basing it on the intense action sequences.

I have no problem with people saying the action was great and how expertly the filming was. I agree with you. My problem is I am not 10 years old. I need more from a movie to be "epic" and "groundbreaking". I enjoyed it. It was fun. It had all the oddities you want from a post apocalyptic movie. It just didn't move me at all.
i'm selling Fury Road
UConn4523 : 5/26/2015 2:02 pm : link
for its fantastic visuals that are the polar opposite of Phantom Menace, literally. I get what you are saying but in addition to thinking people should see this for the action alone, there is a good plot in there that is definitely being over looked. Whether you liked that plot is completely up to you, but its definitely there and a lot better than most in this genre.

They will be making more as well, I believe Hardy was signed on for a 3-4 movie contract. They probably go a lot deeper into his background moving forward, but thats a different conversation.

Agreed. I enjoyed both movies in part and was unmoved in whole.
Saw it over the weekend. Ball. Out. Insane.

Really. I loved it. Me and 2 buddies were each solo Saturday night, the wives/girlfriends had stuff going on, so we went for a steak then saw Mad Max. Perfect guys night.

It's nice to see Hollywood still knows how to make a good old fashioned action movie now and then!!
IMO it's just one long truck chase- if you like that kind of

thing, then go for it.

Taking into account US plus overseas revenues, the movie is still $33M from breaking even.
eh.....wasn't the massive disappointment I feared it would be

Every time they try to replicate a truly epic movie it is a mistake. Road Warrior was epic for reasons that no longer exist. I can still almost taste the dog food.
And to answer your question
Mike in Long Beach : 5/26/2015 4:07 pm : link
Tom Landry (HOF and 3rd all time in wins) had two separate stretches of 6 straight seasons and 4 out of 5 of not making the playoffs.
Yep.

Saw it again last night

just an awesome movie

Hardy and Theron were perfectly cast. Hardy made for a great "Max" and there aren't many actresses that could play a believable Furiosa.

Best action movie ever? Don't know if I'm ready to go that far, but this was my favorite movie in a long time.

The characters in this movie were so damn good, both the heroes and villains. Immortan Joe was a truly fucked up individual and his minions were actually capable bad guys which made Max/Furiosa's efforts more impressive.

As much as I liked this movie, I do have concerns about a sequel though. If they don't switch up the vibe in the 2nd one, this could get a little stale. But I'll worry about that when it gets here. This movie was great on the 1st watch and I can already tell that this is going to be one of those great cable/HBO movies for me that you always watch when it's on TV.
Radar and Fekker didn't like it?

not enough action

and I was blown away. I actually thought i was going to get dizzy and fall out of seat in the opening 20 minutes from sensory overload. This is the Gold standard for whatever the genre of this movie is. I almost felt bad for the people involved in the previews for Terminator and Fantastic 4, the look so hum drum compared to this
