NFT: Outdoor shed recommendations

GMEN46 : 5/16/2015 10:35 am
Hey I am looking to get a nice shed in my backyard. I am debating between wood or vinyl (matching my house). Does anyone have a strong recommendation of wood vs vinyl? Also does anyone have a recommendation in north jersey of a company to use? I have been looking at lowes, but I am open to any suggestions. I am thinking 10x 12 size should be a good size. I am not handy at all so this would be a full install/build not a do it yourself.
What are you planning on ....

putting in it? If you have heavy equipment like a tractor, or if you're storing a motorcycle, then you will want a wooden shed because they are sturdier in the floor. You'll need to have a pad built on the site, which will run you about $600 on top of the cost of the shed. Also, if you go over 100 sq. ft. on the size, your town will require a permit. That varies by town though, I'm sure. I got my shed up in Greenwood Lake and the guy delivered to my home in Bergen County. Can't remember the name of the company, but a search will easily get you that info. Good luck.
I bought an Amish-built shed.

They built it to my specifications, and trucked it to my house. 12x20, vehicle rated floor for about $5K. I am in Central NY, but they built it in Pennsylvania.

Like the guys asked,

What is going inside?

If nothing more than a snow blower, lawnmower, yard tools, etc., then you won't need a foundation, and you can easily get a 8X10 resin shed in the area of $700-$1000.......the key to these diy sheds is level ground......anyone can put these together if you can read directions.....or have your kids do it.... :)

However, getting into heavier weights like a riding mower, means a larger shed with an installed foundation....
I got my shed

from this company (I think local in the MA/NH area) called Reed's Ferry.

I was able to pick the shed to be configured exactly as I want, look exactly as I want (the vinyl siding matches the vinyl siding on my house 100%) and they do the build. I don't even think it's an option for me to build it.

it looks great, and a 12x10 shed cost me $3,500. I liked it so much I got an 8x10 for a pool shed from them.

I got this one with an interior loft and work bench (different color). It fits my snowblower, ride on lawn mower, other yard machines, tools, and skis, fertilizer, etc.

I'd see if they serve your area.

some guy asked me to build one for less than $3k

including the materials, cheap-ass.

He insisted on a kit, (any half decent carpenter would prefer to build from scratch, kits are fucking annoying and the process is totally different, atypical).

Similarly, the process with vinyl fences, totally different than the process of building from scratch.

He must have called the company and asked them to send the most fucked up one in the pile, all the measurements were off.

Long story short, I got it done, no leaks, free extras and to match the house.

I would suggest anyone hire a good, honest professional carpenter, and just let him decide what to do with any given budget, say $4k or more depending on where you live and sit back and enjoy the result.

Hire local and feed someone that way.
actually, it looked just like PJCAS's one

no, but I do have a friend who is a contractor and after I got the estimate I asked him if he wanted to do it for less and he said not a chance.

this isn't a "kit", it's wood construction and built on site.

I watched them build it.
If you are in Monmouth County,...
