The top 3 three year Olds back racing. Lots more speed this race than the derby

I like American pharaoh to win by open lengths. Finishing line likes lots of rest between races. Thinking dortmund gets pressed early. So watch pharaoh to sit right behind dortmund and take it home.
Very good assessment.

Depends as always if Pharoah can get a clean trip.
Tough to come out of post #1.

hard to believe there were 3 Triple Crown winners in the 70's, and hasn't been one since....

It's too bad the clock was screwed in the Preakness for Secretariat.....yes, they gave it to him, after the fact......but three records in three races? Always fun to re-watch his races, especially, the Preakness, after the first turn.....

Victor Espinoza whipped the horse somewhere between 29 to 33 times in the Kentucky Derby and raised concern from the vets. It will be inserting to see if he as busy with the whip today and if the horse suffers from Kentucky.

All the vets said there was no harm to the horse. Espinoza uses a softer tip. If baffert isn't concerned, thrn I am not. Something tells me he won't need the whip as much today.
Is Chris Mara's horse running?

It's a lot harder now. Top horses who don't win the Derby often skip the Preakness and rest for the Belmont. That didn't used to happen. Secretariat and Affirmed only had to beat 4 other horses in the Belmont. But 6 of the 7 last horses with a chance faced between 8 and 11 horses in the Belmont.

And that's if you even get that far. These 20 horse fields in the Derby are ridiculous. We'll never know how many horses that could have won the Triple Crown got caught in the mess of traffic of those fields at the Derby.

some Triple Crown excitement would be nice. It makes the next race much more exciting.

I hope this rain doesn't spoil the race. Can anyone remember a Triple Crown race in downpour?

this rain makes it

Really interesting.

Pharoah has won in thr mud before though.
Conditions looked pretty dangerous when they went to

break.
This is a really incredible downpour.

I've never seen a triple crown race cancelled for weather. I suppose if there was lightning they'd have to, but does anyone remember a cancellation of one?
It won't be cancelled.

At worst, they wait it out.

live just north of Baltimore. It's coming down in sheets. Lots of thunder, and presumably lightning as well. Pimlico is about ten to twelve miles west of me.
More than ever
Steve in South Jersey : 5/16/2015 6:20 pm : link
I hope none of the horses are injured in this race. It would be awful to think that going ahead and running this race had a hand in an injury.
Rain
AcidTest : 5/16/2015 6:22 pm : link
looks like it has at least abated in Pimlico. Where I am we just had a big clap of thunder, followed by lightning.
that was some serious rain before

pharoah just crushed it

I wonder if there will be a ringer in Elmont.
Cool

strong race. Lots to be excited about.
Wow, that was impressive.
yatqb : 5/16/2015 6:24 pm : link
Had to sprint out early and still had the stamina and speed to pull away in the stretch.

Pharaoh was great. Lousy conditions tend to equalize competitors, but he was in control the whole race. Another chance for a triple crown. Thank goodness no riders or horses were hurt.

Super horse!

I don't see him losing in three weeks, but I've said that before.
He had so much horse left at the end
Headhunter : 5/16/2015 6:31 pm : link
I would think he will try to go wire to wire in the Belmont and win easily

There will be a lot of horses

to watch. Materiality and Frosted will get by far and away the must pub to beat Pharoah. I am sure other horses like Carpe Diem, itsaknockout, Stanford, among other Derby horses will be ready too.

But heres something to know. Materiality will be on or near the lead. And Frosted will come from behind. This race is usually won by a stalker. A horse coming from no man's land will struggle. If AP can get the distance, I still think he is the horse to beat.

He was not tested at all during this race. And he still hasnt been passed in any race since his opener last year. This horse is just a different breed. He will be a 6/5 favorite.
