NFT: Anyone own a Pebble Steel?

JesseS : 5/16/2015 11:22 pm
I'm interested in a smart watch for very limited features - notifications etc. I don't need to respond to people or wear a phone on my wrist or do anything wild.

I was really interested in activity tracker, but couldn't find one that I could really wear in a shower, that had a display.

I was in the market for a watch ( I haven't worn one in years and couldn't find the right one).

Enter the Pebble Steel. Pebble is coming out with a new one this month, with color, but for 250, if you want a steel one, which is out of my price range. It also has new features that I don't really care about.

Long story short, is this product as good as it seems? People seem to love it. I know it isn't the apple watch, but I think people that want something in between a watch and wearing an iPhone on their wrist, are quite happy with it. Also, since it came down in price, it seems like a great value for $144.

Can anyone chime in?

I LOVE those devices. Above all else the battery lasts forever, and the apps and functionality expands all the time.

Full disclosure, I kickstarted the Pebble Time. Really excited about the timeline aggregator and the new design.

My one complaint on the steel is that the materials felt a little cheap.
how much of a display are you looking for

on the activity tracking aspect? Garmin Vivofit is waterproof and the battery lasts a year, and it syncs to an app (or their website if you want to track things on a desktop/laptop environment) for more detailed analysis when desired.

I see the allure of the new model, but i don't want a plastic model and don't want to shell out the price for the new metal one. Color screen doesn't matter much to me. Is the pebble steel that cheap in terms of material? I'm thinking the silver one, since I'm assuming the black one can have its color scratched off.
Why Pebble Steel

over Apple Watch or Android Wear?

The biggest culprit to me is that the watch is very light. It does not have that "heaviness" you usually find in high quality watches.

That being said, I've actually had no issues with it holding up to normal wear. No scratches or cracks. I have the silver and the color is fine. I have heard that the black has issues with color wearing away.

What's nice is that Pebble will eventually be pushing a firmware update to all Pebble watches to include the new Timeline operating system. You'll be able to get most of the new features anyways.
