She fucks up in a lot of sketches (like she did with Louis CK), but she's hilarious. I also think they need to use Kyle Mooney, Beck Bennett, Taran Killem and Jay Pharoah more. Jedediah Atkinson is an awesome character.
i am not one of those who bashes SNL .. with changeover in not ready for prime time players and writers you are going to have great years and bad years and everything in between
but that said this year has been particularly awful
one of the worst years in a while
last year was just a little better
I think the cast is ok .. not amazing like previous years
but it is the writing that has become one note and lazy.
went from a guy I hated to a guy that makes me laugh in nearly every sketch. His Steve Harvey kills me.
Leslie Jones is too tough to watch. There are glimpses of funny, but more often than not, her one-note appeal ruins anything she has working.
I love Saturday Night Live and I've always loved it. There are always bad sketches and there always have been bad sketches. SNL is meant for DVR so that you can fast-forward through the sketches that don't work.
The last two years have been a transition year for SNL and the show has always had stretches like this in its history. You can't lose talents like Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, Jason Sudeikis, Andy Samberg, and Fred Armisen all within a year or two of each other an then just expect SNL to mantain the same high level of quality. It takes time for the show to figure out its cast's strengths and weaknesses and to find what works for the day.
The best part of this cast is Kate McKinnon. She is a superstar.
then fast forward to Weekend Update, then delete. And even W.U. could suck when they brought in some of the characters to chat. The sketches aren't any good often enough to bother checking them out along the way. If I miss a few a year I would have liked, I could live with that. Haven't watched since Meyers left. How's W.U. these days?
fan. SNL never really did it for me. I'll take Will Sasso, Michael McDonald, Mo Collins, Debra Wilson, Aries Spears, Frank Caliendo, Bobby Lee anyday over most SNL casts.
1) I'm sorry but that monologue crossed the line. A lot of stand-up is raunchy or dirty or inappropriate. This was well past any of that, in my opinion.
2) I don't care much for Keenan. Outside of his Steve Harvey, he pretty much does the same thing in every sketch, and he laughs in most of them. I also think he is responsible for the single worst recurring sketch in the show's 40 year history, which is "what up with that".
3) Killem and McKinnen are about the best talent they have going.
4) Pharoh started out strong. But, outside of a really good Obama, he's got nothing.
5) I like Che on the updates.
6) The biggest waste on this cast, in my opinion, is Pete Davidson.
7) Leslie Jones is a one trick pony and always has been. Her standup is no different.
8) I absolutely can't stand Vanessa Bayer and Aidy Bryant. They are absolutely annoying. I mean, is there a week when they don't try to shove Aidy Bryant down our throats in what is supposed to be a sexy or slutty role? There is absolutely nothing sexy about her. All it accomplishes is it makes you ask the WTF did they give this role to her for?!
apparently loves Davidson and you can see why but at this point he's extremely one note. He can't really act and he hasn't shown any ability to do impressions.
His whole thing is play an obnoxious/high kid. The first time he appeared (I believe during the Weekend Update) he was kind of funny in a raunchier than usual bit. But, everything since has been pretty much the same. We get it...he likes to smoke pot. There has to be more for him to offer than that.

Yup. Don't disagree at all. I wasn't defending him. He doesn't add much but he's young, has a decent standup act and is the kind of "talent" lorne generally hopes to work with. He's funny at times but doesn't add a ton currently.
I will say that Davidson killed it in the Bieber Roast
still finding his voice. I think Lorne saw the potential in him and gave him a shot.
Louis CK's monologue killed me but I have always been about as big a Louie fan as you could be. It took a lot of stones to give that monologue on SNL. It might be in his wheelhouse, but this isn't his act, but rather a national standard with its own horde of regular viewers.
Personally, I love that he and Chris Rock, who are such legends at their craft, said "fuck it" and decided to do the material they wanted (domestic violence, 9/11, pedophilia).
You want to say Louis' monologue was bad, I can hop on board with that... though I wouldn't say it was bad, but not his best material.
But offensive? Are you kidding me? This was not commentary on child molestation. Child molestation was simply the "wow" medium used to joke about risk vs. reward (it must be amazing from their perspective if they're willing to risk so much!")
If I'm Louis and I'm asked to apologize or comment on the monologue, I'd politely tell anyone who is offended to go F themselves. He built as good a career in stand-up as possible by talking about beating the shit out of his kids, breaking their toys, talking about their dreams being unachievable, some of the dirtiest sex stuff you'll hear.. I mean you name it. But throughout it all, he's stayed funny and off the apology podiums because in not one of his acts does he ever justify these things. He just comments on them. Same as Saturday Night.
if he starts apologizing to people who simply heard the words "child molester" and didn't actually get the joke then I'll be very disappointed.
I actually like CK's stand up and haven't really had a problem with his material in the past. I thought the child molestation bit was in very poor taste, even for him. It wasn't just a risk/reward bit. He spent a few minutes on child molesters.
- Slavery is behind every achievement in the history of mankind,
- Our troops "kind've deserve it" when they get shot at after shooting at people, - He could put a hole through his kid's face with 1 punch,
But saying "child molesters must love it considering how much they risk to do it" is the line?
And for the record, all of the things referenced above had additional context and were part of stand-up routines.
As I said, it was more than the risk/reward comment. He spent a little more time on the topic than one line. Even he seemed to recognize the line may have been crossed as he commented this may be his last show.
SNL sucks - that skit with the elves looking to be sexually dominated
I think the Rihanna performance took the cake. "Bitch better have my money"....da fuck?
I think after the 40th anniversary special it either all fell apart, or it made me finally realize that it's over.

hoping it will bounce back next year.
I shut it off during the 1st skit. How do they let this shit get on the air?
CK - ( New Window )
Kate McKinnon's Hillary is going to be 2016's (if not already) equivalent of Tina Fey's Palin.
If Keenan is one of the three you say are good...yikes.
Leslie Jones is too tough to watch. There are glimpses of funny, but more often than not, her one-note appeal ruins anything she has working.

These days, there are about a hundred TV shows worth your time. Streaming, on-demand, etc. SNL isn't worth a death row convict's time.
It started going downhill more than 30 years ago
Decades ago...is that Eddie Murphy time, or Adam Sandler/Mike Meyers/Norm MacDonald time?
I thought this guy was supposed to be funny. That was the most unfunny monologue I've seen in a long time. Pure garbage.

I guess you missed the '80's and early '90, then..

I didn't even crack a smile the whole show.
