Some Observations on "Finding Giants"

Eric from BBI : Admin : 5/17/2015 10:15 am
I'm watching the extended cut version of Finding Giants and a few things have popped out to me:

* Steve Verderosa tells Chris Pettit at the 2013 Giants-Seahawks game that Kerry Wynn reminds him of Justin Tuck. Pettit raves about Wynn.

* Steve Malin seems particularly tight with the Texas coaches. Suggests to me that he had a big say in Mykkele Thompson.

* Chris Pettit says the CAA is his favorite conference to scout, which helps to explain why we have three Spiders currently on the roster. He also is a University of Maryland alum and seems to have a special relationship with their coaches (may help to explain Cole Farrand).
Where can...

Chris Pettit also scouted Bennett Jackson at his Pro Day.
Thompson is from the Texas Longhorns

Kerry Wynn

is an interesting player. he impressed enough to make the 53 in camp. then surprisingly effective in the games. his on-field mannerisms do remind me of tuck, not surprised to hear that

i do wonder tho if he wasn't one of the few DL's we had that actually fit Perry's "hold the point" scheme. He and JPP may have been playing in their best scheme already.

we have 6 playable DEs on the roster. Wynn is going to have to beat out George Selvie or Robert Ayers and hope we keep 5 DEs. Or both of them if we only keep 4. Hope he does

I'll go back and see if I got the schools confused. Malin does work Texas.
I've been watching a lot of NYG action from the 2014 season
djm : 5/17/2015 11:02 am : link
And I can't find many negatives with Wynn's play. Granted the sample size is small and at times the competition was shaky but not all times. And it was still NFL comp. To me Wynn looks like a keeper at DE. He's just a solid if unspectacular player.

Everyone is talking about Moore and his importance to this season but I like Wynn a lot more. He's sound.
I think Robert ayers is dead man walking
djm : 5/17/2015 11:07 am : link
He's hurt and he's an average player. I know he flashed at times last year but now he's hurt and a year older. Giants will keep Wynn if it comes down to it in my view.

Time will tell...injuries happen these things have a tendency to shake themselves out.

I got the school wrong, it was Texas. (I'll edit above) He also did scout Jake Matthews at Texas A&M.

But before he visited Texas, the show made a point of Malin's connections with the Texas staff, and then it showed him having lunch with the associate athletic director of the Longhorns.

the reason why I think it will be tough to part with Ayers is that he was our best pass rusher when healthy last year.
this
Eric from BBI : Admin : 5/17/2015 11:37 am : link
has already been pointed out by others who have watched the show, but it bears repeating, the Giants have physical prerequisites for drafting players. There were a few times in the show that scouts said things like, "he's a productive player...he had 14 tackles in this game, but at 6'0, 220 pounds, he is too small for us...he doesn't fit our profile."
New defensive coach
Howard K : 5/17/2015 11:40 am : link
might mean some changes to the requisite profile.
the unknown with Wynn is actual pass rush ability
JonC : 5/17/2015 11:41 am : link
He's an anchor versus the run, which is where Ayers tends to be inconsistent, as well as getting dinged. Moore figures to be safe based on potential. Selvie would be least expensive to jettison, iirc, so he or Ayers figures to be odd man out.

I wonder who's out at DT as well, Kuhn looks like a goner, and even tho Jenkins play some DE they might need his roster spot.

JonC : 5/17/2015 11:41 am : link
Good eye on the UT connection. We know NYG has great respect for the DB pipeline down there.

It's been the same since I started watching the Giants. They have physical prerequisites. They downgrade or even take guys off the board if they don't fit their profile. They did the same thing in the show with a DT.

This is exactly why it was easy to predict the Giants wouldn't draft last years draft god, and DOE, Aaron Donald -- for all his productivity and athleticism - he did not fit the Giants profile
sorry DOE = DROY

Spags wants big LBs, for example
JonC : 5/17/2015 11:46 am : link
NYG on the whole prefers larger players, it's a big man's sport, changing the profile isn't likely.

Jon - to elaborate on the term "larger" you mean GiantS - n'est pas?
re: Wynn being a pass rusher
bc4life : 5/17/2015 11:56 am : link
I watched him last year and he did a pretty decent job of running plays down and chasing the QB. He played a lot of DT in college. Now that he can devote all his time to working as a DE, his NFL position, I am looking for him to get better at rushing the passer. His off season work should have been targeted toward doing just that. This will be a very interesting pre-season for Wynn.
Selvie vs. Ayers
batwood06 : 5/17/2015 12:29 pm : link
At least to me, this is a position battle headed into camp. Wynn looked alright in limited action, good size, never looked out of place despite his FCS college career. Even if NYG keeps 4 DE I have a feeling it will be JPP Wynn Diggy and Moore.
The Giants only seem to "profile" D-linemen, LBs and TEs
Ivan15 : 5/17/2015 12:38 pm : link
We get DBs who are 5'9", RBs who are less than 200 lbs. and O-linemen who are 290 lbs.

Maybe if they took a chance on some "freak" LBs, we would be better off today.

I think they need to keep Ayers, if he has recovered
Ivan15 : 5/17/2015 12:45 pm : link
He is a former 1st round pick of Denver who showed last year that he can be productive if used properly in the right system. Compare his production to Tollefson who stayed on the roster for a few years.

He doesn't have a big injury history and last year's injury is not career ending, although he probably will be limited in weight training.

OLs who are 290?? The lightest OL listed on the roster is Richburg at 298 and we know he's probably at least 310. Second is Pugh who is listed at 301 and we know is at least 315. We have one RB less than 200 the UDFA Hunt and one DB who is 5'9", McBride. Maybe you should check the roster a bit closer.
It's
Eric from BBI : Admin : 5/17/2015 1:20 pm : link
interesting that last year they seem to have gotten the guys they targeted in each round.

They had Beckham #1 followed by two OL's, one of whom as already drafted. They all seemed to gush about Beckham at the Combine.

They targeted Richburg in the second round...and there are clips of Ross and the scouts at the Senior Bowl saying he could start for the Giants at center as a rookie.

They didn't spend much time in the show on Bromley.

They thought Andre Williams had a 2nd round grade and tried to trade up for him in the 4th round, but he fell to them.

In the 5th round, they argued over whether to take Berhe or Kennard first, but ended up with both. Two of the scouts said they thought Kennard's best position was MLB. The senior scout, Collins said this pick was his favorite of the draft.

They seemed to have a consensus on Bennett Jackson in the 7th round.

Merritt and the west coast scouts were very vocal about getting Behre and Collins wanted Kennard.

McAdoo was pushing Collins on getting Williams even in a trade up.

Texas has been known as "DBU" for quite some time now due to their niche for developing outstanding defensive backs. There are quite a few products of "DBU" that had very successful NFL careers.

Then why did we acquire two waifs at LB in free agency this offseason?
Because they're backups and special teamers
JonC : 5/17/2015 3:30 pm : link
There aren't many "freak" LBs in the game of football anymore, and this regime has shown little penchant for finding any. Why would anyone expect that to change now?

Wynn was excellent in containing the backside and pursuing down the LOS from the backside, and did come with a DT pedigree.
The found Kennard

Carl Banks raves about Kennard, good enough for me
JT Thomas is nearly 240 lbs btw, only Cassillas is smallish
JonC : 5/17/2015 3:38 pm : link
Kennard is much closer to their preferred OLB profile, dude's a brick wall.
To repeat what I have
YANKEE28 : 5/17/2015 4:13 pm : link
mentioned in other threads, in 2011- two of the starters (for 9 games) in the Univ of Texas defensive backfield were Chykie Brown and Mykkele Thompson.
Re. Ayers being the best pass rusher until he was hurt:
Big Blue Blogger : 5/17/2015 4:21 pm : link
Ayers exerted far more pressure than any other lineman. He also missed a boatload of sacks. Is that coachable? Did it happen partly because the rest of the line was so bad that opposing QBs had their choice of escape routes? Hard to say. If healthy, I think he'll make the team, but he's a frustrating player. Just ask Bronco fans.
cubed, well said
JonC : 5/17/2015 4:24 pm : link
I've said before, he was the same player in 2014 that he was in Denver. At times you see a player, more often he's nowhere to be found.

Prince is 6' and DRC is 6'2". Every single corner on our roster not named Trumain McBride is at least 5'10". There are 6 safeties that are 6' or above, the only one shorter is Gordy. WTF are you talking about?

Andre Williams is 225. 5 out of 6 RB's are above 200 lbs. Again, WTF are you talking about?

Everyone on the OL is above 290 lbs. We just spent a top 10 pick and a 7th rounder on two 330 lb goliaths. WTF?

Show me who these "freak" lb's are, and tell me how we could have picked them. They are few and far between.

Basically, everything in your post is factually incorrect.

Eric thanks for the tip on NFL Now on Roku!

I'd tried it about a year ago, found it to be limited and not with my time...but now that you mention it I added the channel again, and now they have a ton of content!! However, where on there did you find Finding Giants? I don't see a search function in NFL Now, and I can't locate FG. Thx in advance!

Eric from BBI : Admin : 5/18/2015 7:42 am : link
On mine, you go to the NFL Channel, select "Series" and it is listed there. I have noticed that they add and drop content there quite a bit. But Finding Giants is there right now (as well as the team highlight videos going back 30 years).
Eric- got it!

I'd stopped scrolling down after all the team logos...didn't realize there was more content below. Thanks again.

Roku's got so much content on it that we actually dropped DirecTV and just pay for Netflix, Hulu (plus the Amazon Prime account we already had). We're paying a fraction of what we did.

That's where they had me too...but it's actually easier for me to write the game reviews based off the internet feed because it is easier to start, stop, and rewind action. I found myself actually not using the NFL Ticket that much last year. I'd prefer to keep it, but it's just too damn expensive.
