and there are many. The highlight of the George Martin TD on the sack by LT is the play that year later in an interview with Bill Parcells, when he was talking about LT freelancing and making plays, how LT caused that sack/fumble/TD and Parcells yelled at him because that blitz was not in the Giants defensive playbook, and LT told him to add it in because it's a doozy.
Again, the guy who puts these together is a great Giants fan who I have collaborated with for a few years now and we trade old games and he was able to get me a bunch from the mid 2000s which I'll be using for reviews as soon as I can finish a project at work which is taking up almost all my time.
how I can't remember something I did a week ago, but plays like Elvis Patterson's pick in OT feels like yesterday. I think the Andy Headen return is one of my favorite's of all time, as is the Martin play against Denver.
Our ST have been such an embarrassment for so long. The only time I have been excited recently was watching David Wilson return kicks... Every time he touched the ball you thought he had a chance... And Im sure Quinn had nothing to do with it!
1) Outstanding linebacker play (already mentioned).
2) Wow, did George Martin score a lot of TDs.
3) Very innovative and effective special teams trick plays (paging Tom Quinn).
Thanks for sharing! A couple observations I made; Â
1.) It's amazing but not surprising how many of these defensive plays were caused by LT. Seems like if he wasn't the one returning the ball for the score, he was either the guy who made the hit on the QB or disrupting the play in another way.
2.) One thing that stuck out was how good the defense was at throwing blocks and getting downfield the moment they forced the turnover, which helped lead to the return for a TD. Above all, Mark Collins stands out in several plays, hustling downfield and throwing key blocks to extend the play for a defensive score.
3.) I remember the Tom Flynn blocked punt return for a TD against the packers in '86 but forgot/didn't realize he had 2 other special teams scores!
4.) How crazy is it that Jeff Feagles was the Eagles punter back in 1990, realizing that he would end up punting for the Giants another 15 years later and be a key weapon on that Superbowl XLII team!?
Where did those dominant defenses go??!! I saw all but two of LT's home games. I used to love sitting in the upper deck and watch him with his incredible backside pursuit. While you tend to focus on his sacks, he ran down running backs going wide on a regular basis ( behind the LOS)To this day I have not seen another defensive player that disrupted the offense in so many ways.
Lots of TDs in 1981! Then some lean years. No returns for a TD by anyone other than Meggett? Finally, damn we have more fake kicks and punts in the 80s than the next 25 years combined.
one of you guys can help me. Last year on YouTube they had the whole 1990 Giants highlights tape on there and I watching religiously just as I did back when I was in grade school.
I don't remember the name of the video, but it's awesome and if anyone had a link for it I'd be extremely grateful.
I am 26 years old and watched that VHS tape nearly every day after school in 3rd grade.
But also the sobering reminder that there were times I wished we would just punt, to get the D back out on the field so we might have a chance to score...

Yes. Hold 'em offense!
LT on Thanksgiving was amazing. Seeing a guy that big just open it up on WRs and RBs. Great read by him, nice hands on the catch.
Tom Flynn scored 3 special teams touchdowns for the Giants in his short stay with the team. He finished 86 with a block punt TD (last game of regular season) and then started 87 with a block punt TD. He also had two consecutive opening night block punt TD's 87 and 88. Pretty darn cool for a guy who was not there for very long.
The LB's made a lot of plays but what you can also see from these videos is that average secondary players can be effective and can have scoring opportunities when opposing QB's are pressured. You can have the best secondary in the NFL but if the QB has all day to throw you will get beat.
The Andy Headen TD is one of my favorites but that game was one too as LT had two different sack fumbles against the Boys deep in our territory. Loved that game.
Man I miss those 80's teams. 81, 84, 85, 86, 88, 89 while not always ending the way we wanted sure gave the fans a lot of memories. I still believe 89 would have been a Super Bowl if Bavaro didn't get his knee blow out against the Chargers. A banged up LT and Simms hurt the team too but Bavaro would have made running game nearly impossible to stop and would have given Giants a secure middle threat to churn out first downs and more clock eating.
The 88 team was killed by injuries late but would have been in the playoffs (with 49ers out) if they had not blown that late TD pass to Rice in week 2. That play will forever be in my memory.

Hi guys – 55 year fan – long time lurker, first time poster. Seeing that Defensive – Special Teams clip, had to respond. What I really liked about all those times were the celebrations – gang tackling each other in the end zone – like the whole team couldn’t be happier. We still have some of that, but boy, we used to have a lot of it – here’s to more celebrations.

Clams, sounds like my house on a Sunday back then too!
I remember one time, my mother had to go out, to us (me, Dad and my brother) to make sure we stirred the sauce every 15 minutes. Naturally we got so wrapped up in the game that we forgot to do it, and the pot cooked down to about 3 inches of mud with some meat in it! :-)

I also watched the Pain Game Parcells claimed it
was the Best Game he ever saw a Defensive Player
