I have an idea for the Dillon Gee problem
CMicks3110 : 5/18/2015 9:41 am : link
I think no doubt syndergaard should stay in the rotation. He is by far a better pitcher than Gee at this point. Gee, is still a good pitcher, and we want to get value for him as a trade chip in the near future. We also waste that value as a long man/middle reliever in the pen - and a six man rotation messes with the rythm of the other starters. So what to do? Over the winter, Collins/Alderson talked about doing "short starts" (60-70 pitches) for Harvey and some of the other pitches to preserve their innings. So, why not designate Gee as the 2nd starter and begin practicing that for a month or two. Harvey goes 60 pitches one start, gee is slotted in after him. Same with Syndergaard, Degrom, and Niese, who either have innings limits and/or history of injury. Thoughts?

Absolutely no chance Matt Harvey is going to want to give up W's. Even on a business level, Boras would never ever allow this without causing an insane stink. Gee to the pen should help them assuming his arm is up to it.

I like that.
Solution to the lack of W's. Start Gee, let him go 3-4 innings. Then have Harvey finish it off and get the W.

think using a 6 man rotation is more realistic but expect Gee to the pen.
Gee was in the pen
pjcas18 : 5/18/2015 9:57 am : link
before Wheeler got hurt, Gee goes back to the pen.

It shouldn't even really be a debate.

Thor shouldn't be in Vegas and his upside is much more than Gee.

Trade Gee if they can, if not, someone will get hurt.
Why does it seem like there is a lack of aggression
pjcas18 : 5/18/2015 10:01 am : link
with moving Morris?

He's 22 in A+ which sounds about right, but the way he's excelled I'd think they'd push him to see how he reacts.

Is there something unique about him or relievers in general where that's a bad idea?

Their handling of him has been very strange. He's already on the 40 man with a crunch coming up in the off-season so pushing him now makes the most sense. Why he stayed ALL of 2015 in Savannah is beyond me. His command continues to be an issue but it likely always will be.

Yeah, that's even better. I think that keeps innings low, keeps gee in the position that he's at his best doing, which is starting. He's just not that good of a reliever. Terry said he looked "awkward", and i'm not talking about every harvey start, just mix and match between each of the members of the rotation. Harvey even said he wants to pitch every 5th day, and terry/sandy said there may be some starts where he just goes the minimum number of innings possible. So this would be a way to make that work, while preserving Gee's trade value.

yeah, let's get 10 starting pitchers and have two pitch each game with one closer.

Holy crap what a weekend! Good times all around. So is this for real? Did David Wright ACTUALLY start baseball activities today? Looks like TDA going to start gearing up too. It would be awesome if they could both be back in a week. The bats seem to be coming out of it. We are going to be fine. Id still prefer a better set-up option but am willing to ride it out temporarily if Leathersich, Robles, and Goedell get more time while Parnell, Black, and Mejia try to come back.
looks like Carlos Torres' arm

is going to fall off season, so Gee will have a spot in the rotation for him soon
Curtis Granderson has officially been awesome
ZGiants98 : 5/18/2015 2:06 pm : link
There are three better RFers in the league offensively. Bryce Harper, Giancarlo Stanton, and Mark Trumbo.

All that and I feel like he's only just entering a hot streak.
Cerrone
DanMetroMan : 5/18/2015 2:07 pm : link
thinks Wright is about 2 weeks away. Doesn't sound like Black is close. TDA sounds about 10 days away.

Jenrry Mejia will return before Vic Black. I've been saying this for weeks now. Watch it happen.

bit misleading.

Granderson is 12th/25 amongst RF in wOBA and 12/25 in wRC+. I know you are talking about the NL, and he's been good but he's been "solid" more than awesome.
Black
DanMetroMan : 5/18/2015 2:12 pm : link
Vic Black will continue to rehab with High-A St. Lucie, according to SNY’s Robert Brender (May 18, 12:42 pm).

Black had been scheduled to advance to Las Vegas and pitch on Sunday.

is on pace for .248/.359/.403 with 21 homers, 21 doubles 55 rbi 13/17 steals. I'm sure most of us would have said "I'll take it" before the year but certainly not "those would be awesome numbers". Not knocking him, he's been good but good, not "wow".
Funny that Travis..
Italianju : 5/18/2015 2:19 pm : link
would be back faster then wright. As soon as they said that 2-3 weeks or whatever for wright you just knew he would be back around the all star break. I really hope the Mets arent banking on him coming back and solving the offense problem.
Yeah...
ZGiants98 : 5/18/2015 2:21 pm : link
Im referring to the NL. And sure, I didn't mean to say he's Giancarlo Stanton or Bryce Harper or anything but he's been very good. Certainly better than almost anyone on here expected and better than last year. Im not only looking at his homerun numbers obviously. He's simply been a much better player overall and I swear he's done it amongst a cold streak. He wasn't hitting the ball all that well, yet he was still able to work a bunch of walks and get on base when he was struggling. Now it looks like the bat is coming with it.

ZGiants98 : 5/18/2015 2:23 pm : link
pointing out steals(we all know he doesn't steal anymore) and RBI's(he's leading off) isn't all that relevant to me. Sure he's here to provide pop, so looking at his homerun pace is important, but I see a much better player this year and the metrics are supporting that.

He's been one of their better players and has been very solid. Awesome is just a little much for me. 21 homer, 21 double pace is solid not eyepopping. Last year he still hit 20 homers with 27 doubles.
I
DanMetroMan : 5/18/2015 2:28 pm : link
think he's currently on pace for about 2.0 WAR (.4 through 38 games).Last year he was only worth 1.2
Sure...
ZGiants98 : 5/18/2015 2:29 pm : link
Maybe "awesome" was a bit much. lol. Maybe in comparison to what most expected out of him. He isn't striking out nearly as often and he is getting on base a ton. And I guess Im just saying he's been well above average for his position(which is loaded btw)

Also, assuming he is about to go on a hot streak, 2 homeruns this week puts him on pace for 30 homeruns all of a sudden. I could easily see him ripping off a few more homeruns.

Anyways. Fair enough. He's been very good.
Granderson has met expectations
Eric on Li : 5/18/2015 2:54 pm : link
A little bit of pop, very solid presence getting OB at the top of the lineup, though lacking anything dynamic. There weren't a lot of options to do the job he's been doing well, so it's hard to complain about his performance to date.

Slightly OT, I'm pretty pissed at Dan because he got the idea of Gomez on this roster in my head. Talk about a guy who add some energy to everyday lineup.
So when is Matz coming up?

load the bullpen with Gee and Niese? What are we doing here?

"He moves well in the outfield, though his speed is fringy and not ideal for anything but a corner. His below-average arm plays best in left."

Niese's arm has almost no chance of being an asset in the bullpen.

just noticed Akeel Morris had gone 4 straight appearances without a walk before walking 2 today. I wonder if he was close to a promotion before todays performance?
