NJ.com/Powell suggests that if LaCosse & Tye show they can provide Special Team help the Giants could keep 4.
Is Donnell, Fell, LaCosse, Tye possible?
Giants' Tom Coughlin likes what he's seen from undrafted tight ends Matt LaCosse and Will Tye - (
New Window )
One may make and the other may sit on the practice squad.
Is Tye really a TE? He is a hybrid player. Very intriguing.
I think it is a good shot that both those guys make the roster at the expense of Robinson and a defensive spot.
also do you start to work tye some at h-back too and possibly bump hynoski off the roster?
It is early but Tom Coughlin at least knows their names going into camp.
I agree. If he's healthy, he's a great talent
This is a luxury position in the sense that unless some special can't pass up player comes along, we should not expect any significant investment in the position while issues exist in more critical areas. The same can be said for LB.
This means the bar is very low. The field is open and an undrafted guy who can do some things in terms of blocking and catching passes has as good a chance to not only make the 53, but to earn playing time on game day, as anyone else.
Agreed with above, doubt very much the Giants keep 4, possibly 3. The question is can both Tye and LaCosse beat out Fells and Robinson which from what TC has been alluding to there is a remote possibility.
LaCosse looked really good catching balls including that diving catch that was out of reach that he still brought in.
Tye definitely does not fit the mold of a traditional TE since he is only 6-2 but weighs around 260, and holy crap, he ran a 4.47 in the 40 at that weight and has fly paper hands and can block.
I think he makes the team...perhaps as a fullback giving the "Hynoceros" a challenge for his starting position.
Either way, I hope they finally cut Robinson. 5 receptions in 3 years just doesn't cut it for a TE who doesn't block. He's made about 800k per catch. He should consider himself fortunate to make that kind of coin at his age.
I'll even go out on a limb here and wonder if maybe they try to work out a trade with Denver, who lost their rookie TE to an ACL injury. Maybe the Giants ship one of their extra TEs to the Broncos for another 7th round draft pick.

From a contractual standpoint, Fells is closer to Kevin Ogletree and Chris Ogbonnaya, who were already cut, or Dallas Reynolds. For $80K, Fells puts a floor under one of the backup TE positions. That's good value for insurance, but that's all.
If Adrien Robinson shows up in shape, stays healthy, and continues to improve his blocking, he'll be on the team. I know his stats are abysmal. So were Visanthe Shiancoe's.
The only way Will Tye - or any other TE - winds up at fullback is a Hedgecock/Pascoe scenario, where the starter gets hurt and a TE fills in.
He has good size..hopefully this is a kid that fell between the cracks and we've found a prize.
I think you're really undervaluing Hynoski. Although his role has been trimmed in the new offense he's still one of the best at the spot in the league, dying position or not. I think it's foolish to expect an undrafted rookie TE to fill his shoes. He's a helluva blocker and has better hands than most people realize. He had 23 receptions his first two years in a limited role and IIRC didn't drop a pass. He's a natural with the ball in his hands, perhaps more so than any FB in the league. He didn't convert to FB until college and before then he was a prolific HB who ran for over 2,000 yards and 50 TDs as a HS senior (my wife did her student teaching at his school, Southern Columbia, a perennial PA powerhouse, and I got to see him play). Now I'm obviously not saying he can do that at this level, but that kind of natural talent doesn't just disappear.
Damn. I was hoping for the occasional four tight end set.
I would not scrimp on defensive linesmen for tight ends either.
it has to be one of the hardest most brutal things in sports, makes sense to have extra DEs AND DTS active! and adds variety in featuring schemes.
Cruz busted out in 2011 - out of nowhere really.
A. Robinson missed rookie OTA's due to college and was so raw his rookie year. We knew that when we drafted him but took a chance on his physical skills.
Year #2 he got hurt.
Year #3 he was healthy and flashed in camp, learning a new offense and learning the position.
In year #4, I predict he'll "bust out" and surprise. I would not doubt we go Donnell, Robinson and LaCosse with Tye on the practice squad.
