Looking at going to the Yanks/Angels June 6th, 7pm Saturday night game and we wanted to potentially stay in/near Manhattan after some evening festivities in the city. We'd be open to staying near Manhattan (how late do the trains run?).
Help out a novice and let me know of any tips or decent places to stay for just one night. Thanks in advance.
Also check out Jersey City (e.g. the Hyatt), though the PATH adds an extra hop to your trip.
I'd not try and find that great of a deal, I'd go major chain, and I mean Marriott like the times square Marquis, not even a courtyard or god forbid a fairfield inn.
I stayed at the Bryant Park courtyard and the room was so small I had to leave my clothes outside.
I stayed at the Washington Square Hotel (or whatever it's called in Greenwich Village) and got stuck in the bathroom for 6 hours.
money is worth convenience for me.
if not for you try priceline. You could get a nice place in tea neck.

The host told my friend that if anybody asked they were a "friend" visiting from California. Not sure if your plans allow for that kind of an arrangement, but something to consider.
Seriously though, my mother in law got me a groupon for my birthday for a hotel in the city for a night out with my wife. It was at a "boutique" hotel that had great reviews on Yelp (mostly from tourists that think 34th and 5th is the best place to be in the city...)
The place was a total piece of shit. You get what you pay for.
That said, I recommend this hotel near MSG/Penn station. Friends of mine rent out one of their suites (that have balconies, kitchens) for the SuperBowl every year.
Affinia Manhattan.
Name Your Own Price has been around for a while and works well, but I like the Express Deals setup even more. Hotels are listed with their price, % off, classification (how many stars), neighborhood, and guaranteed amenities - a lot of the time, by cross-referencing that list against a regular Priceline search, you can figure out which hotel you'd be booking through Express Deals and get the big discount without the mystery (this is how I got my Surrey discount).
Use Jetsetter or Hotels.com and you should be able to get something decent. Again it all depends on what your budget is.
But for example on the 6th, you can get a King room at Le Parker Meridien for $329.
The other thing to do, is grab a deal on Hotels Tonight if you are willing to be adventurous and not get a reservation until the morning of the 6th. I've done that a few times and it works well.

If you're looking to save money and not wake up in a bathtub with your organs missing, this is the best response. Agreed 100%

You can't be serious. The St Marks in the East Village? They sell rooms for cash by the hour, it's a popular spot for whores and drug users. My buddy used to live a couple blocks from there, we'd always love watching the zombies go in and out of that place after midnight while out barhopping
As others posted above, it's tough to go on the cheap in the city...the Affinias as someone mentioned above used to serve me well when I'd travel to the city.
I'd recommend looking up all the hotels on Lex in the mid-50s (there's a W there, others like it) - generally those places run $400/night, but if you do your shopping ahead of time you can occasionally get deals
It's 120 bucks a night and the man wants a cheap place. I've been there before. There's really nothing wrong with it. if you're holding it against a standard 400/500 a night place, then sure it's not great. But he's looking for cheap, and he's going to get that and be safe doing it.

I have stayed there numerous times and never saw any hookers or druggies in the hallway. Maybe a few drunk college-age kids but nothing crazier than that. It's comparable to a European youth hostel (the kind with private rooms and bathrooms, not the dormitory variety.) They absolutely don't charge by the hour.
There are quite a few usually in Manhattan. Look at the reviews they are usually spot on. I have used them in other places also.

Sound like a Henny Youngman routine
Just book the Parker Meridien and be done with it. Good hotel. no need to spend huge money if you are coming back from the ball game or want to stay out late on the town.

Trust me, they offer rooms by the hour. I know a couple heroin addicts, that is one of their go to places
Look up some of the reviews online...if you don't mind cum stains on the floor, by all means St Marks is a nice place...just check the bed for used needles before getting in...

The link I've added is filtered to show only 4-or-5 star hotels in Manhattan for $265 or less. You can stay in Central Park South at a 4-star hotel for less than $200 (plus taxes and fees). There's a 4-star in FiDi in the $160's, there's a 4-star near Penn for under $200, etc.

Sounds like you're a man of experience. I was a cokehead myself, heroin was never my bag
