NFT: Interview question

Steve L : 5/19/2015 7:35 pm
I've had my share of job interviews and conducted my share as well but this is a unique one for me...

I have an interview next week scheduled with four people (all top company execs) and it is scheduled for 11-3. Is it appropriate to ask if there will be a lunch break and whether I should bring something? That's a long time to go without food. Especially that time of day. Obviously I can eat prior but just wondering what you guys think.

Thanks.
Who set up the interview?
Headhunter : 5/19/2015 7:37 pm : link
ask that person if you will be breaking for lunch
I had a similar situation recently.
DC Gmen Fan : 5/19/2015 7:37 pm : link
I had a big breakfast around 930, then brought a power bar, apple, and banana to snack on. You will most likely have adrenaline going which will suppress your appetite.

Goodluck!
I think you can go four hours without eating

SVP of HR set it up. I can ask her. I just wasn't sure if it was appropriate or not.
It is absolutely appropriate
Headhunter : 5/19/2015 7:46 pm : link
It is usually written out at that level
Of who you will be meeting with and the time allotted.if there is no break scheduled, do what you need to do to get through it.
Maybe they're testing to see if someone can go four hours

Without eating. Good way to screen out 74% of America the fatties.

Usually the only time I go that long within eating is when I'm sleeping. And I'm quite skinny :).
Absolutely appropriate to ask.

It seems a little odd for them to schedule that time with no break to eat, but whatever, who knows what they might do. But it's certainly reasonable for you to check so you can eat beforehand as necessary.

Congrats, you're hired!

You start Monday.
It's four hours. I wouldn't even ask the question.

Be prepared to not eat but it would be a pleasant surprise if they provided something.

You should be able to power through though, cmon
You objective should be

making an impression on the execs. Go toe to toe. If they eat, you eat. If they don't, you go without and stfu.

Good luck!
Do not ask

it isn't a big deal.

i am guessing they will give you something or give you a chance to get something.

lol, this.

Sure, I'd wonder the same thing. But instead of asking I'd just eat first and then grab coffee on the lunch break if there is one.
Maybe part of the interview will be to take you out for lunch...

and see what you select. So your next employment may hinge on whether you select that big fat juice burger or that bunny food. Choose wisely, my friend.

25% of applicants blow their interview at lunch or dinner.
Well I asked
Steve L : 5/20/2015 3:08 pm : link
and there will be a lunch break. The HR person apologized for not telling me in the original email.

As for ordering, I can't eat salads for a whole meal, and I'm not stupid enough to order something messy like a burger :)

Thanks for all the well wishes!

Thin privilege.

You fuck. You wouldn't hire him just because of the color of his skin!

Take some

adderall before the interview. Problem solved.

I would actually take some Viagra before the interview. Show them what a real man is...unless you're Asian, then it definitely won't help.

That's the truth. I know I've been hurt before by going to dinner (and usually its someone not very senior, younger , and seemingly cooler) where I thought the day was done and let me hair down more than I should have done. Said things that should have stayed hidden. Mostly it was because the people I was with were drinking and speaking casually and I thought it was okay for me me to do so as well and was maybe not circumspect enough. I know at least once, i joined a political conversation and it became clear that I was a Republican. Stupid me; an academic job I blew then and there.

Why can't you eat a salad for a whole meal? it's not like you're last meal here or a pre marathon carb up, it's a 4 hour interview that happens to include the time you normally feed yourself.

I'd expect a grown man to be able to make it 4 hours without a snack. certainly without having to have a meal. and worst case I think a salad should be able to hold you over as a whole meal. Who are you Kenny Banya? Would soup qualify as a meal?

I wouldn't hire you based on this thread.

More fat discrimination.

Shame on you!

it's not the fatness
pjcas18 : 5/20/2015 4:11 pm : link
I've never seen Steve, though since he doesn't consider salad a possible meal, I would guess he's on the jumbo side.

it's the attitude. he could never be my latex salesman.
If I were one of the hiring managers
JonC : 5/20/2015 4:14 pm : link
it would be a strange question to hear. Perhaps not an ideal time of day, but I'd expect a man to be ok for four hours without food, especially in context of trying to impress and earn a job.
