if I let that happen I'd only be listening to country music and watching old westerns.

I understand the significance of the last show
Mike from Ohio : 5/21/2015 10:52 am : link
because of Letterman's longevity, and the significance of his show back in the 80s, but how many people still watch his show regularly? I guess what I am getting at is whether this is a big deal because it is semi-historic, or will people actually miss have Letterman's show to watch?

I can't remember the last time I heard anyone mention anything funny or relevant they saw on the show. It seems many who watch it do so out of routine more than anything else. Granted I am not a fan - of his or any of the late night shows. I am just trying to figure out why his last show is particularly significant.

But their regular news show is pretty mainstream.

I you actually watch the bulk of their shows, they have a lot of liberal guests who are very good. And when they interview Republicans, they don't pull punches (see Chris Wallace's recent interview with Rubio for example).

My problem with the other networks? They have completely given Obama and Clinton a pass on EVERYTHING. It's astounding.

Spot on analysis. Allowing the conservative viewpoint to be expressed at all is what has gotten Fox labeled as a radical and far right network.

reminded me of how much I enjoyed Dave back in the early 90s. But then the whole thing got stale.

Of course, nothing was as good as Late Night. Being on an hour earlier just removed some of the best, most bizarre stuff. Same thing happened to Conan, and he's only now getting over it (because no one ever sees him on TBS).

Still, can't wait for Colbert!!!

I dont think it has much cultural relevance. I dont know who still watched his show. There were probably two times I talked about Letterman in the last decade -- his legal stuff, and the Joaquin Phoenix appearance.

The significance is the end of an era/great career. And nostalgia; his Late Show stuff was very relevant to a lot of us.

As far as pure news goes they are not bad until they start slanting it to whatever talking point they were told to hit on that day. No one network just reports the news (Except maybe BBC and Al Jezeera, but even they lately have gotten caught up slanting the news), but to claim they do not filter it in such a way as to get their political angle out is wrong.

Their news ticker on the bottom is hilarious to watch at times with how they use it to nudge viewers
Anyone else remember watching his morning show?
steve in ky : 5/21/2015 11:13 am : link
IMO that was him at his best but it never lasted because of the time slot.
Personally, I'm not watching a talk show at this time usually
Matt M. : 5/21/2015 11:18 am : link
But, right to the end of Leno's era, if I was watching at 11:30, it would still be Letterman because I thought he was still the better option. Since, I would sometimes watch Fallon, sometimes, Letterman. Was he as funny as his NBC show in the 80s? No. But, how much of that was simply both he and his audience getting older?
As far as Julia Louis Dreyfuss
Matt M. : 5/21/2015 11:20 am : link
I never considered her very much to look at to begin with. She certainly got better looking with age, but I would never have called her hot or sexy. She is now an attractive woman for her age. But, some of the other women mentioned in the same age bracket were always better looking and continue to be (Lane and Pfeiffer, for example).
I haven't watched Letterman in forever

His (very good) NBC show was more niche comedy. When he moved to CBS, the show was intended for a broader audience, but Letterman never really seemed comfortable or very good at it.

The production of the CBS show became terrible, too. The audience wouldn't laugh at jokes -- they would clap for them. It slowed down the pace of the show and was pretty annoying. And the excessive commercial breaks made an NFL game broadcast seem like it had flow, in comparison.

And on top of all that, I happen to believe that this style of show is dead. I can't believe how many of them still exist. B-rate and C-rate hosts doing scripted interviews with B-rate and C-rate entertainers, with a desk, a chair, and a house band. Is there really a young audience for this stuff anymore? I had no idea who followed Letterman on CBS until Tuesday night. I watched the first 10 minutes. Oh my God...spectacularly unfunny show.

Pretty good take on the whole late talk world. I do think Craig Ferguson tried to do something unconventional and did.

This is exactly what I am not getting. Some in the media are portraying this as the end of an era, losing a friend, etc. What is funny is the media seemed to be the only ones talking about it. I don't recall one person I know mentioning his show ending. It seems like this is the media taking themselves more seriously than the rest of the world does.

Except for this guy, who seems to have developed a deep and lasting bond with a guy on TV.

You clearly don't watch enough of the other channels. They go after the Clintons and Obama on reasonable issues. The big difference is that they won't indulge the lunatic issues that FOX tries to bring up over and over and over again that have all been discredited. Not wanting to discuss Benghazi anymore after several different committees has discredited it is not giving Obama a pass. Its refusing to beat a dead horse.

FOX is so ridiculously right leaning its a joke to call them a news station.

montanagiant : 5/21/2015 12:02 pm : link
Their own claim of "Fair and Balanced" is utter bullshit. Just come out and say: "The Rights news channel" and be done with it. They would catch much less grief, and actually eliminate a talking point against them.

There is nothing wrong with picking a side, there is a wrong though to do so and claim your not.

FOX catches so much sh*t is because as someone pointed out a recent study done by Bruce Bartlett a republican - that
shows that Fox News Watchers are less informed than people who do not watch ANY news shows

There is a difference between tilting conservative to flat out misinformation and propaganda
The great thing about biases is nobody can see their own
Mike from Ohio : 5/21/2015 12:10 pm : link
The leadership at FOX can't see their own bias to the right just as NBC can't see it's own bias to the left. I think the FOX slogan is more intended as a counterweight to what they perceive to be a left tilt in most main stream media (i.e. we overcompensate to the right to bring balance). Again, not saying I agree with that, but that has always been my perception.

Most media outlets are a product of bias. Not always actively and not always intentionally. New directors give weight and attention to the stories they believe are the most relevant, and that is done based on their own biases of which they typically remain blissfully unaware.

is a victim of his own ego. The next person who tells me that I just don't "get it" is going to get punched in the face. I got what he was trying to do, it just hasn't been funny or entertaining for a very long time. What's really funny is how everyone ignores that he was trying (and often succeeding) to screw every intern that walked into the building.

And how the fuck was Paul Shaffer allowed to be on tv for this long?!

Because people have fragile egos and take it as a personal insult when someone doesn't agree with them, criticizes them, or challenges their ideas IMO.

It seems to come out most often with religion, politics, sport team preference, phone manufacturer, console manufacturer, and console vs PC.

The latter of course is PC and if you don't agree, you're an idiotic peasant.
